- Over two days we visited three Paradors and stayed in my two favorite Paradors. We visited Las Medulas, where the Romans mined gold. And we visited Santiago de Compostela.

Yes they are all great paradores; we are a bit behind these guys, we have visited 54 so far. We live in London and we sail to Santander and then drive. But if you are looking for a god selection if travelling by ferry from Britain or Ireland then you can plan a coastal, mountain and urban paradores on an easy loop if you can spare a couple of weeks. We'd suggest the grandeur of Santiago and Leon, San Estevo for it's wonderful loneliness but also the small castle at Monterrei, if you want to visit Rioja the parador at Santo Domingo de Calzada is both pretty and right n the centre of town, and perhaps the rather humbler Cervera de Pisuerga and or Fuente De for their location in the Picos, Hondarriba is a nice and the small one in Satnillana del Mar is well located for the ferry back. In general tourist terms Northern Spain is a complete contrast to the mass tourism of the South; I'm not knocking those who like that scene but this one is very different.
I totally agree with you about how wonderful north western Spain is. We haven’t been to Santillana Del Mar but it’s on our list. I envy you being able to get on the ferry and makes road trip in Northern Spain. I guess it would be kind of like us going to Yellowstone and the other sites in that area.
