Gene Wood guest announcing TPIR helped him prepare for his future announing gigs, including the CBS and Syndicated remakes of Card Sharks, Family Feud with Ray Combs whenever The Price is Right played against The Young and The Restless. And of course, Classic Concentration!!!!!

@UrsusTheodorusdoesGameShows Yep! He was rarely describing prizes aside from fee plugs/consolation gifts on any of those shows, which also included Double Dare Trebek and Card Sharks Perry. So The Price is Right was a big step for Gene Wood, as well as Bob Hilton & Rich Jeffries, who were also Goodson/Todman announcer veterans.

Gene was absolutely brilliant on everything, especially Family Feud. TPIR’s gig involves A LOT MORE announcing, so Gene’s energy level may not have been what they needed. It’s like how Vin Scully and John Madden sounded excellent together in 1981 when they did football on CBS…but their own styles didn’t really jive together.

And speaking, "Super Password", in its namesake bonus round, each time contestant failed to correctly get all 10 answers within min., why would jackpot be raised by $5,000.00 instead, $1,000.00 until someone gets all 10 answers right within min.? Now that, I.M.O., could've been done in "Alphabetics" bonus round, previous "Password" revival series under "Password Plus" title (January, 1979 till March, 1982) whenever contest failed to correctly guess all 10 answers within min./jackpot could've been raised by $1,000.00 each time no one got it until someone won it

Gene Wood was a legendary announcer in his own right, but just didn’t have it for TPIR. I will say though that I love his “Come on down!” in the opening sequence here and in other episodes I’ve seen with him announcing. I actually like it better than Rod’s. When it came to reading the prize copies though, he sounded just too scripted, whereas Rod sounded natural like Johnny did. Gene’s domain was the likes of Card Sharks, Password Plus, Super Password, and of course Family Feud among others, but TPIR was unmistakably Johnny’s. Still, Mark Goodson once said that he felt very lucky to have two announcers like Johnny and Gene working for him.

I know he tried his best at it, when it wasn't good enough, there, so Mark Goodson hired Rod Roddy, instead, a few mos. later, in early 1986. I was so glad he filled-in for his mentor (Johnny Olson) anyways, and substituted, until there were several other announcers getting Johnny's job, until Rod took over, and yes, Rod had plenty of announcing experience, too, including the more successful game show, "Press Your Luck."

We saw Rod all the time, calling down the final contestant. At first, he wore strangely colored blazers, but then he went for Thai silk later on.
Now, George Gray is seen doing that... twice. Sometimes, he might fill in as a third model, too. He always sends a shout-out to "Mama Mai" when Drew enters.
