The Mi 9 is the latest successor in Xiaomi's flagship range of smartphones. The Mi9 is one of the first smartphones to feature the all-new Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor; one we will see in a lot of upcoming flagship phones in the coming year. This new CPU means it's not only much faster than it's predecessor, the Mi 8, but it should also be much more battery-friendly.
The main upgrades, besides the CPU and GPU, is the (improved) in-glass fingerprint scanner on the front of the phone. This reacts much faster and results in much less failed unlocking-attempts than the Mi 8 Pro.
Very welcome is the addition of Qi wireless charging that's supporting 20W Qi Quick charge. The 20 watt Qi chargers that Xiaomi recently released are very popular and have been consistently sold out since their launch; so I have not been able to try that out.
The battery is slightly smaller, as the Mi9 comes with a 3300 mAh battery, as opposed to the 3400 mAh battery found in the Mi 8. However, the Mi 9 should give you much better battery performance due to its new CPU and GPU.
The triple camera setup is probably one of its highlight features; considering that has been given a DxO-Mark score of 107 which puts it just below the collective number one spot of Huawei's Mate 20 Pro, P20 Pro, and Samsungs Galaxy 10 Max.
The camera is really impressive. The regular camera shoots up to 48 MP (downscaled pixels merge it into 12MP output) and these photos come out great! The additional 2x zoom lens and the super-wide angle lens (117˚ field of view) make this a very versatile camera rig which is the first time for a Xiaomi phone.
The video shoots 4K UHD at 30 fps per default and has very impressive image stabilization. At night I did encounter a few times where the focus would abruptly shift, but this was mostly when shooting at 60fps, and felt more like a software bug than an actual problem with the camera.
Overall, both the video and the images I have taken with the Mi 9 are very impressive and I tend to do a full Mi9-camera-video sometimes soon. (Let me know in the comment section if that's something you would like to see!)
Both the speaker and microphone seem to have slightly improved when comparing to the Mi 8, making it a better performing phone overall.
To conclude; I find the Mi 9 to be a very good upgrade of the Mi 8. It has some of the features I personally missed on the Mi 8, like Qi Charging, and it has improved on all fronts. Also, the significantly smaller notch for the front-facing camera is a change that many will be very pleased with.
Especially when taken into consideration that this is the first phone sporting the Snapdragon 855 processor, that it has a top-3 (or top-4) DxO-mark performing camera AND that it is the most affordable phone from the list: The Mi 9 is probably THE smartphone to look at early 2019: it's a really well-performing beast of a phone for a very (very!) competitive price!

I think it's actually quite important for most markets. It, for sure, is important in Asia...But I see many selfies being made in Europe as well, so I'm guessing it's a global phenomenon ;)

@@dzus no app drawer yet but you can install poco launcher or any other basically i like it without a launcher since miui is one of the most customizable skins however chances are you won't like and can therefore flash any rom available, xiaomi will not void your warranty for that it is an ugly process though which could have been simpler.

There is something else I have in mind: the Mix 3 5G. If you could get your hands on that one and compare it to the MI9 that would be great. I mean, 5G connectivity is cool, but at the end of the day there's no way you could complain about a Snapdragon 855 powered device regardless of 5G, so MI9 and Mix 3 5G really fight over my interest. 😁

A great flag ship phone but sadly there's no 3.5mm audio port for the head phones but it's one of the greatest phone nowadays. Looking forward on this.

Finally a great follow up to the Mi Note 2 from 2016 that was a great phone. Cell phone makers today forget how important the in hand feel is. Heavy and wide is bad Apple.

This phone seems really good but I will wait the price drop a bit, because it's quite pricey even if compared to a s10 or even a s9 it's cheaper but their phone will be above 500 if they continue like that... (But I am currently happy with my Galaxy s8 so I will wait next winter)

while the mix 3 is a gorgeus phone with an awesome display the mi 9 specs are just better. I dont like the notch but i think its worth the savrifice if you are looking for pure speed and a better camera. I love the mi mix 3 but im going to go with the mi 9 (buying it this month)

Just because it's fast doesn't mean you should call it a flagship. Small battery, no 3.5mm. I think the if you put a 855 into a Redmi Note 7 Pro - THAT would be a proper flagship.
@Siim Ehastu Adapter is not a replacement for dedicated 3.5'm. Just another thing to get lost and then you won't have it when you need it.
@Siim Ehastu I own and have tested them, Battery tests don't take into account standby. The Mi 9 sucks in standby. About 4x worse than the Mi Note 6 Pro. Overnight your loose loads compared. They should have put a 4000mah.
I tend to keep phones for 2-3 years. How good is Xiaomi with updates?

Great review, I enjoyed it! I'm really planning on getting this phone, although the thing that's holding me back is the fact that people are complaining about advertisements on standard apps in MIUI. Could you or someone else tell me a bit more about this? This isn't really clear for me since it seems like it affects some people but not all of them

@@shadowv6794 the mechanism for the camera is a bug issue. I don't trust it.
@@drakoran It's not the mechanism that fades quickly, but the cables that flex and connect the cameras with the motherboard. Also it is not necessary to slide the phone every now and then, but only when you need those front cameras. Simple as that.
@@shadowv6794 it still makes the phone weaker as a whole. I don't find it a good solution yet. Op7 could be implementing a little pop up camera as well, we will see I guess.
Mi Mix 3 vs. Mi 9. Which one would you choose?
The Mi 9, i prefer it because of the on-screen fingerprint and the face unlocking feature. It doesn't have a sketchy sliding mechanism and probably is lighter.
Mix for me, once you go ceramic you ain't going back to glass

@@meihooman7561 I opted to go with mi 9, the deciding factor for me was because k20 pro at that time isnt available with its global rom which is the mi 9t pro and i dont want to own a chinese rom on a different country. Plus the camera was also a big factor for me since mi 9's camera is a bit better than k20 pro's, but i do want the notchless display of mi 9t pro and the larger battery of it plus the headphone jack lol

I have a generic question about the Mi9 based on the following redmi note 7 model ((M1901F7H) which
supports 4G LTE Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 20, 28, 38, 40 but not all Note 7 models did ).
Does the international variant support these LTE bands and CDMA? Also, how about WiFi calling? Would really appreciate a response. Thanks
