They actually built 255 XR8’s. 5 Preproduction cars were built 6 months before the dealerships got their cars. One auto went back to the UK, Ford in Port Elizabeth had another 2 for testing and the press and my family got the remaining 2, Our cars are number 4 and 5. They sold for R27 500 back in 1984/1985. We still have them after all these years.

My late dad was a director at the local Ford Dealership and he brought the XR8 home a few times. I remember I deliberately used to put my school bag in the boot and then ask for the keys just so I coud hear (and show off) when he started her up. Iconic vehicle

hardly smal for the era. there was only the Granada that was bigger than the Sierra in Europe at the time. the Sierra was eventually replaced by the Mondeo which is now the biggest car (ignoring SUV style crossovers etc) Ford make for Europe and it has grown to....the size the old Granada was!

I know this is a bit late here but did you know about the BMW333i and 745? What about the Alfa GTV 3.0? All developed here for racing in the Group 1 class although as far as I know the class was made redundant before the 333i got to participate.
SA racing also developed the Opel Kadet 2.0 “Superboss” to compete with the Golf GTI and BMW 325iS not sure if you ever got those but they were all such cool Q cars with cult followings!

A friend of mine had a V6 3.0 Sierra which was part of a cancelled order for the South African police, it was tuned had uprated wheels tyres and suspension and air conditioning other than that it was very sparton in specification. If that was debadged anyone in the UK would think been a 4 door its an XR4X4 . Shame its not a 3 door as it could easily made to look like a 3 door Cosworth the rear spoiler is similar to the 3 door Cosworth & the 3 door XR4i . The wheels had RS on them they look as if they could be the same wheels on S1 Mk3 RS Turbo escort. Would love to see it up against an early Cosworth .

I've lusted after one of these for years, sadly like the Cosworth they'll be way out of reach.
For us poor british only high end cars came with a V8 so very few of us experienced one.
Besides when you look at numbers a lightweight 2.0 turbo could smoke a heavy old 2 valve push rod V8.
But! Then I had my own V8 experience and have lost interest in small capacity engines!! Now I get it, the torque and the noise👌

You need to import some Aussie Commodore and Falcon V8s. They were just affordable everyday cars for us.

@@pitman2911 ok, so its nothing like a Mustang EXCEPT it shares the Borg Warner T5 gearbox, the engine came straight from a Mustang and it has a borg warner rear diff. so ignoring the bodyshell, what exactly on this car ISNT mustang??
yes the Mustang has the film icon status, but who makes all the films....America. where is the Mustang from....America.
do you really think that the Mustang would be the icon it is now, if they had made Bullitt in South Africa and used a Cortina (the predecessor of the Sierra) instead? or if the 'eleanor' car had been a Ford Capri (european one) in Gone in 60 seconds? had it not been for the Dukes of Hazzard and the Fast and Furious franchises, most people outside of America would probably not know the Dodge Chargers (or Challengers i always confuse them) exist, other than on the internet!
the Definition of a Muscle car was alwyas a BIG engine in a SMALL (comparitively) car, that could only go FAST in a STRAIGHT LINE. and according to the owner in the video, because of the power the handling is terrible, so fits the Muscle car category perfectly! it usess the 'muscle car' mustang Engine! America came up with the definition of a Muscle car, and this car ticks every box.

@@petelattimer6808 what if, if that we could go on and on ,people that are into cars know their cars they dont need movies most of the time been passed down from father, grandfather maybe few magazine's growing up .the Australian muscle car the XY GT HO FORD FALCON 351was the fastest 4 door in the world it was built in 1971,im not sure if it was in 2009 or 2011 that they made something faster. Now that held that record for many years nothing came close, did the Italian, German, English, American know about this beast of a car dont think so but people that are in to cars know,Australia had the XA GT HO PHAZ 5 which they stopped production and was ban on the road because it was to powerful does the world know about this one as well people that know their muscle cars do.a muscle car has got to have history has to look tuff as you look at it you got to feel that this car means business when you drive it you always thinking this car wants to kill me its a different feeling .muscle cars are not small not at all the 2 doors are as big as the 4 doors ,big motor and aggressive style to them.Sierra,Cortina,Capri are no were near a muscle car never will be,they sell for nothing here in Australia. about the movies and what if what you mentioned the Mustang made it because of what it is tuff aggressive mean pure muscle, there is a reason why we dont see sierra,Capri,Cortina in movies there is no wild factor...simple
