I have a few samplers, but the Blackbox is more intuitive, and easier to get going on than the others. It also is more like a Swiss army knife, being able to do lots of different things, like multi track recorder/player, effects for external input, sequencer, and control voltage record/playback. And it has a small form factor that I really like, and the build quality is excellent, with just the right amount of encoders, and buttons + touch screen, that work together very well. I even installed a battery inside mine, to make it even more portable, and convenient to use. Thanks for the show, and have a great day 😻
@@treetopjones737 And yet it's better than most of the simple computers in a box. If that is how you are defining gear, you might as well dismiss most of everything.
I love the 1010blackbox. It is especially great for traveling and has a nice sound. I thought that hitting tiny screen pads would be an issue, but it is surprisingly comfortable. That said, I only found it practical for traveling, and think it is the best production device to bring on a plane.
Solid review of this little sampler. I’ve had one for a couple years but moved on from it about 10 months ago after they released 3.1 which broke song mode for me. I will say the highlights of using it for me was when I had an Akai MPD226 pad controller connected to it which worked extremely well and essentially motivated me to get an MPC One to replace the Blackbox. That and the X/Y touch filters which are hidden behind a double tap of the FX button. Besides the breaking song mode release, the rest of the machine feels like a beta release product that looks to be all but forgotten about by the developers since they released the Nanobox series.
I have one of these. It's a really great, extremely portable box with fantastic support from the developer. It's definitely weird, takes a minute to wrap your head around but once you do this thing is stupidly powerful for being so tiny. The latest firmware quadruples the number of available patterns and completely overhauls song mode so that it's probably the best song mode (once you learn it, it's great just different) of any device in this price range. None of that tiny sample limit BS here, if you want to load a 30 minute sample, go ahead. It doesn't have the elektron style trigger stuff, but I like that about this. I don't get lost tweaking a gazillion tiny trigger settings, I just write songs or beats on it. Pro tip: most of the sampling issues people report are because of older or slower SD cards. Spend a few more bucks on a fast card and most of that vanishes, never to return.
Would you recommend this for live performances using a digitone (the brain of my setup) to send midi out to this? I’d mostly be using this as a sampler
@ It would work fine if the Elektron box is triggering samples based on a midi track. It’s also very good at improvising loops and the like to add flavor to a set. It would depend on how you do it. If you wanted a series of songs (lots of loading) you’d have to plan around that as it takes a bit to load, but it would be very easy to build an entire set around one song that’s full of samples (in other worlds, you make one song/file your set) Nice thing about this box is that there really are not any sample length limits. Want a bunch of ten minute long samples you’ve chopped up and play on different notes? Go ahead. So like many music devices, it depends on how you use it. Main pitfalls would be that switching songs isn’t instantly fast, there are 16 samples per project/song (but these can be of any length and be chopped up over dozens of notes) and the fact that this thing really needs a quality sd card and an up to spec power bank/usb charger or you’ll get occasional glitchy weirdness.
@ as of right now I use the digitone in song mode for my live shows and that tells everything else what to do. In my mind I’d use midi to send the triggers to the black box. I assume I could either have the black box change patterns with the digitone or keep the black box on one pattern with the samples for the entire set in that
I'd love to see you do a review of the Casio VZ-1. Impressive specs and a very unique archetecture, but one of the most awkward interfaces I've ever used. I've never used a DX7, but based on what ive seen, I'd likely prefer its interface to that of the VZ-1. I CAN say with absolute certainty that the Korg Prophecy is pretty straightforward by comparison.
surprised you didn't mention its crazy noise floor (at around -45/-50dB). a digital device in 2020s with higher selfnoise than analog desks of 1980s. tiny 40db headroom as a result. way to go.
The finale of “the fast and the Fourier” with a nod to nyquist reminds me of “get the fuck off my FFT” on squarepushers “do you know squarepusher”. Solid!
I owned one and it's very fetish-worthy. It's a really powerful setup. After a while trying to touch screen arrange midi notes and even worse edit them with the knobs wears you down. I loved the endless sample lengths, I hated trying to use the knobs to control sample editing. I hated fighting to remember how to assign lfos to things.. the fx was great but considering they have a sister box that does fx in the modular world, it feels like a cheat that it only has basic fx. My last gripe was it felt like an endless wait for that, "final update" that made it a real tool. I sold it reluctantly because I truly loved it despite all its flaws. Love/hate vibes all the way.
I get you. I love it but I use it pretty simply. But entering/editing midi notes using the touchscreen is one of life's most pointless and unenjoyable things ever 😂
Im thinking about sampling capabilities - which at the moment I pack, together with a mixer or multiple input for stems to polish later on. Since I got bitwig I believe there is no hw able to compete in terms of sound design and with a sampler I could bè able to take the sounds out and just play hands on. Now, this bluebox is actually super interesting because it can sample, it can do looking, it can expand thus tracks on other machine, it can multisample as well and due to the form factor it could bè a tool box to bring the machines all multisampled or sampled and play on the beach. I was eyeing a tracker+ before, or an octatrack but really, idk. I think for now I will wait and enjoy just jamming with what I have
Love the Black Box. I'd definitely hate it if i was relying on it as my main sequencer, but it plays well in my setup with the Keystep Pro. it can play a lot of roles really well, but it's not powerful enough to be a setup centerpiece. It's great as a slicer/clip launcher/sketchpad/texture tool, and in combination with its tiny size, sturdiness and fast UI, it's really capable for a live setup.
Hilarious you uploaded this today, because I'm literally going to Detroit Modular TODAY, to buy one. 🤣 I'm using it to record, and arrange complete songs.
I have a few grumbles about my MPC One! That utterly useless step sequencer and the lack of automatically triggering the sampler from the start/repeat of a Sequence (to avoid pratting about extending Sequences to rediculous lengths on audio tracks to be able to jam over a loop and have the sample retain sync). Edit: I almost forgot to grumble about the kludge needed to set the time signature to anything interesting.
if this thing could record launched/toggled on and off clips properly into the sequencer, it would be damn near perfet. sounds incredible, the comp/delay/reverb/filter/master eq are all wayyy better than they should be. like very very excellent quality

Btw, how about an episode on the PWM Malevolent, would be great to see more left--field synths on the show!
Great suggestion, thank you!!!
The midi out can power your midi thru box, but 1010music messed up the adapter cable. The shielding is not properly connected. Had the same issue.
Thank you for the heads up!!!
Thanks, I hate it ! Not even AudioPilz managed to save this one. That's quite a feat in itself.
;)
Blackbox is an incredible device. But you are right: Alternative Iphone apps like Koala are also amazing. What a shame Koala is not a gear but an App. So it will not appear on your channel 😞
👍👍👍
He's done plugins before
@@tezeta3725 I was gonna say...
Koala is a pretty widely used app at this point. Lets make the case for it as a 1st Bad Gear App review! He also might have to get an iOS device! We need some more "bad" reviews for Koala!
Welcome to bad apps …
Opening sequence totally cracked me up
😀😀😀
I’ve never owned or even played with a 1010. The razzmatazz and its timbre control is super enticing though.
👍👍👍
the Razz is hugely underrated. I love mine.
@@ukbloke28 I’d say under-appreciated at large more than underrated. Everyone who has one says it’s great.
@@alexwestconsulting That's the definition of underrated.
I’m sure everyone’s comments on the midi specs and trs voltage levels being lower and all that. Not arguing against any of those points at all. Using a different trs dongle on the black box lets it power that exact Quadra Thru, though. I retested it this morning!
Thank you for the heads up!
My Exquis midi controller supposedly arrives today. Bad gear and good gear on the same day!
Nice!!!
i was waiting for this :)))
It was about time!!! Thanks!!!
