My favorite band growing up was the Smashing Pumpkins...say what you will about them, they were a prolific band at least. I guess some of that rubbed off on me? You should see the back catalogue of unpublished stuff also.
I love the stock sets for these, im intent on getting a kit near future. id like to do the whole get all the different manufacturers deal, but that's going to be slow going with the kit hunting required and the list of other things my inner nerd deems I "need"
Well, if it took you 20 I suppose I cant beat up on myself to much for not being nearly a quarter done 2 years in. Things seem so much simpler in your head sometimes!
I was in East Berlin October 16,1990.Only a couple of weeks after re-unification.People in the East didn't know what was going to happen to them. The Russians had told them "We saved you from the West". When they went walking down the Ku Dam, They realized the big lie.I paid 5 cents for liter mugs of beer.$3 for strong schnapps. We met some Americans who directed us to a Soviet arsenal being run by some young Germans. They were having a garage sale. The Russians left thier equipment behind.East German made AK's for $5.Discounts for volume purchases.Ammo,grenades,RPG,etc..I knew US Customs wouldn't accept my hand written receipt from Hans and Franz. No Government people on site. These guys were very proud of DDR quality. If we wanted to test them,No problem.I wish I could have found a way to get them here legally.
a german ak for 5 bucks goddamn i would spend everything i have if i was given such a chance lol i also remember an older guy i knew telling me his story about how he would sell truck loads of chinese SKSs for $20 a piece and for a little extra be would add can of like 600 rounds or so.. man those were the days
Thanks Mish, your videos are always so interesting and knowledgeable. Today, I purchased my first AK the MPI-KM... found it collecting dust at a gun shop. The rilfe is basically unused and in its original form - unsanatized. It was a gift, brought into South Africa by a diplomat and therefore, he was able to liecence it as a civilian back in the day. I would imagine these rifles are extremely rare here in SA. Got it for ZAR R10400 (595USD). Happy days
We built one back in late 80's or early 90's. Good steel! Most interesting and sometimes mysterious ways they were built and gotten over here. Well Done.
The Wieger was intended for India and Peru in high numbers. When the wall fell the new reunited Germany and their intelligence agencies confiscated all remaining guns and blueprints and brought them to a secret place. This all came to daylight when 10 years ago a guy was in the act of buying the old factory and wanting to start production of the 940 again..there are a few pictures of bundeswehr soldiers in the late 90s early 2000s in which one soldiers holds a carbine version of this gun
Many of them were supplied to Croatia via Germany as they sided with the West during the Yugoslav Civil Wars. This is why they came out of the former Yugoslavia scrubbed by the Germans before they reached there for plausible deniability.
Misha-Great videos as always. Have always wondered if you're an engineer or technician, as your videos always have the facts and not alot of clutter-John in Texas
The compact East German AK-74 was called the MPi-AKS-74NK. It had the combo front sight gas block and actually had a 12.5" barrel and a full length gas tube. I don't think they actually made an 8" barrel "Krink" sized rifle. It was essentially an AK-105 variant and the E. Germans had their own AK-105 long before Russia did. Maybe thats where Russia got the idea for their 100 series carbines. Larry Vickers has a video where he shows and shoots one of these. It has a unique combo gas block front sight. He said he sent it to JMAC Customs so they could make a copy of it. It also had a unique flash hider. It is one of the coolest variants that I have ever seen honestly. Here's the link to the Vicker's Tactical video on this rifle. m.ruclips.net/video/lpPgg64PUbE/видео.html
I picked up an East German parts kit through Apex. Im eventually going to build it, once I get through my 4 other AK projects. I did notice however the front trunnion is a bit oversized (I think it's a 3), and I don't have any barrels that would fit it. I'm going to have to knurl one of my barrel journals to make it fit, but Id rather not.
Does anyone else think Nodak Spud is kinda a weird name? I know lots of builds utilize their receivers and they have been around but when I heard or read their name it doesn’t seem to fit what they make. Like a brand of potato chips or something idk...
@@adamarens3520 I would imagine that's what it means. It's based out of Edina, MN (so I'm not sure if ND stands for North Dakota or not, but I don't know what else it would be) and potatoes are commonly associated with Russia.
Originally NDS was either located in ND or the owners were from there...can't recall the exact story ATM. Also potatoes are grown in ND...as well as Russia. Trust me, Russians love there potatoes....every meal, every meal, my wife has potatoes...so many potatoes....millions of potatoes, potatoes for me, potatoes for free.....
Hey Misha , Very specific question here but I remember seeing on one of your old AK videos you had a Slab Side in a Type 3 Milled AK. Now this slabside was interesting because the floor plate was not "Smooth" but rather had the dimples on it like later AK mags. Do you know anything about these mags? Where these floor plates replacements because old ones were lost? I have a slab side with later steel magazine internals and was just curious. I almost came to the conclusion that new parts were added in for stupid 922r restrictions.
Beautiful rifle, would like a new affordable all that works great with a darker stock, kalashnikovs with light wood stocks or plastic furniture isn’t nice in my opinion.
What do you think of the Cugir STG 2003C? There isn't much information about them on the internet, would be awesome to hear you talk about them if you get a chance. Thanks!
As part of the final exam for my course in "How to be a better liar", I got up in front of the class and said "I know more about AKs than misha!". I failed because, as the instructor said, "a good lie is based on a kernel of truth and is at least potentially credible and ain't nobody gonna believe that"
Peru was the only country that receive the STG-941 prior to the downfall of the Berlin Wall. Around 2,000 rifles were delivered, out of a 10,000 rifles purchase order, along with the ammo, in 1989. The order was subsequently cancelled by the German Government in 1990. Surviving quantities of such weapons remained in warehouses until their destruction by the reunified German Government in 1992. Some weapons were spared from destruction; some donated to museums, and small numbers used by the Bundeswehr for training.
Hi Mishaco, I have a question I just came across a East German Ak like the one your showing. But one problem is there's NO serial numbers on the trunnion, dust cover, bolt, or charging handle! The receiver has a serial number & it says LEE ARMORY. I was told some German ak's were sent to Croatia & they Scrubbed off the serial numbers so they wouldn't know they came from Germany. IDK can you please help. They want $2500 for the AK
Hey man thanks for the response, I didn't even watch the whole video until now. So I didn't hear him talk about the scrubbed out serial numbers thanks again!
Very good video. Always enjoy the history. Side note you should totally edit in a shot fired when you dry fire it in one of your videos, I think it would be hilarious.
And to think I used to believe that if you saw one AK, you'd seen them all... What do you mean by 'scrub'? Is it a literal removal of identifying markings? LASTLY, that cup kept catching my eye...Is Rib Crib BBQ giving you a discount??? *grin*
Yep, they would remove the manufacturers marks on the trunions and sometimes the small parts, though its not uncommon to find remaining marks on small parts like bolts and pistons
If it says "made in Germany" it means "made with quality". From the 1930's to this present day the Germans continue to make some excellent firearms!
Well, except the ROHM RG10...
I had a chance to handle an Original Suhl Mp-i in Iraq 2003. Well made and impressive. Great video Mischa! brought back some memories!
My favorite AK furniture is the East German (although my AKs/variants were Polish). I just love the look.

Great gem dropped at 12:17! About the STG-940
Would be a fun clone build if we ahd a few orig STG940 parts to use like say stock or gas block.
I own one of the rarer 74 variants with an original barrel to go with it.
Scott7891 how much would you say that’s worth? Looking for some og barrel EG options want to get a gauge on prices.

Yep, the STG940 was to be primarily for export and to compete with more modern weapons around the world. I'd love to have a semi-auto version.
Many of them were supplied to Croatia via Germany as they sided with the West during the Yugoslav Civil Wars. This is why they came out of the former Yugoslavia scrubbed by the Germans before they reached there for plausible deniability.

The short barrel AK74 used by the DDR was actually not an 8", it was just under 12.5" for the barrel.

They had the kits about a year or so ago. This video was recorded back in November, so is part of our rather extensive back catalogue.
