DPops opens the 2022-23 concert season with an arrangement of music from Illumination’s debut film, Despicable Me (2010)! In it, we meet our protagonist (“Happy Gru”) caught up in line at the coffee shop - what else is he to do but freeze-ray the people in front of him (“Despicable Me”)? His father and coworker Dr. Nefario then notifies him about a rising supervillain, Vector (“Nefario Calls Gru”). Gru responds by assembling his team (“Minions March”) and announcing his next project: stealing the moon (“The Moon”). To do so, he’ll need the shrink ray currently in Vector’s possession, so he adopts the three girls who peddle Vector cookies (“Adoption Process”). Gru struggles to establish some household rules (“Gru’s Kitchen”), but indeed gets them to sell “cookie-robots” to Vector, which snag the shrink ray (“Cookie Delivery”). In time, Gru grows fond of the girls, causing Dr. Nefario to fear their monopoly on Gru’s time, so he sends them back to the orphanage (“Don’t Let Her Take Us”). Gru, downtrodden, manages to steal the moon, but his nagging guilt drives him to try and catch the girls’ ballet recital - only to find that they need rescuing from Vector’s clutches (“Gru vs. Vector”).
Despicable Me has since had sequels and prequels, video games and theme park attractions - it’s now the highest-grossing animated film franchise of all time. What I hope our piece will do tonight, then, is remind you of what made the movie so charming when it first came out.

Although this maybe overlooked most of the time I really like this theme at 8:23 It starts off as sad but heart warming at the end, something the sequel films sort of never get quite right.
