On your lower pipe where the cleaned water is drawn up, only drill holes underneath the pipes. That way sand or other filter media wont go into the pipe :) I'd also like to see a future version with a good backwash mechanism too! Good work, this system will be highly effective for many years!
To adequately size your rain water storage tank and filter you must calculate the expected rain water flow. It is done by checking the rainfall intensity on your location found on handbooks or government weather data. It is usually given in mm/hr (can be converted to m/s), you can multiply it to the area in which the rain water will be collected (usually the roof area) to get the expected rainwater flow in cubic meter per second. Check the discharge flow of your filter. The difference between the expected rain water flow and filter discharge flow should be the basis for the sizing of your rain water storage tank. A 10 percent factor of safety is usually enough to size the entire system.

A gutter harvest of water can be done by adding a "T" pipe before entering tank. Coming from gutter down pipe is gravity. When tank is full, pipe will fill and overflow through the "T" pipe.
This is the video I have been looking for; thank you! I have a couple questions: Why don't you crush the charcoal, or at least make it 8mm sized? Have you had the water tested for mineral content? I ask this because since the gravel is a little random, couldn't there be chemical impurities from the rocks in it? Such as lead, heavy metals, etc. Why don't you refilter the water from the holding tank back through the system? Or would that be overkill?

How will you do maintenance (Changing the gravel, sand and charcoal) with this set up? Or it doesnt need maintenance for its biofilter? If thats the case this means the biofilter setup will last a lifetime? Hope you could answer me. I Love your content!
Zelo dober in poučen video. Izpopolnjen in izboljšan princip Josha Kearnsa - voda v nasprotni smeri težnosti.
