Mike, making my way through your videos, last week you helped me with a 300 tdi head, p gasket and timing belt change. Next job, windscreen wipers! The "complete failure" part of this vid was brilliant!! Thanks for your advice, you're a great help.
Replaced the entire assembly on my 2007 TDCi Defender at the weekend. Took around 2 hours and cost £120. An easy enough job if you can remember how to put everything back together 😂. Cheapest quote I had for a LR specialist to do the job was £600😱
Thank you so much, this really helped, had to bend my new cog was spinning & watched this and bent my new part a tad as suggested in this video and my wipers now work!! Awesome, thanks again 👍
This was a life saver to me ! just changed out the internal gear in my series 3 motor, motor itself was fine but the little shim on the cog had snapped off, this vid and the other one about the stop switches gave me real good tips, many thanks ! off to play in the snow now....
Ive just ordered a couple of OEM wheel boxes and a cable, £37 each for the former and £11 for the latter, plus VAT no doubt. Looking forward to taking the complete dash of my Puma out and finding other hidden challenges.
I know this is an old one Mike but I'm due to do this job on my 200Tdi next week. Glad I remembered watching this so just refreshed my memory. Key lesson here is to fully test everything before the dash goes back in.
You learn more when you do things WRONG, not when you do them right first time. from failure stems success. Great video Mike, and again shows that we are never to old to learn. Best wishes from Yorkshire, Rob.
I don't think that there are two sizes Mike, I recon someone working nights in factory somewhere in China got it wrong. One of my best idea,s with that type of wiper set-up was fitting them to the Ford Zephyrs, and other Ford,s. As you may recall, when you put your foot down to accelerate, the wiper's would stop because the vacuum dropped. I used to take the full wiper system off a Morris minor and fit them to loads of Ford's, I even made them two speed by putting a resistor on the shunt field windings. Great little week-end earner. One problem was that the pick-up arms were to long, so I used to buy two rubber tap swirlers, the one,s that we had on the kitchen taps to rinse the sink out. Great day's Mike, when car wheels were made of wood, and the drivers were made of iron. Keep up the good work Mike, I am sure that you are encouraging some young lad,s out there to become a better mechanics. Best wishes from Yorkshire, Rob.
I never got into 60s Fords - well, Mk1 escorts and tranny vans were my era Yes I hope I can inspire someone to take up the trade, however I think you need a degree in electronics today! Mike
Hi Mike, having trouble with the windscreen wipers. Just replace the bulkhead and putting the wipers back on. When they stop and park after use they are vertical instead of horizontal. Any ideas why? Not sitting at the bottom as they should. Thanks Hasan
They are vertical at stop and going down to the right then coming back up and stopping. If I move them from vertical to horizontal at stop there is nowhere for them to go as they want to go down not up.
I did this months ago but didn’t check it before I put it all together. So just took the dashboard top off and bent the tops of the wheel boxes with a hammer and big screwdriver. Job done 😎
You might have just saved me some money there mike. I swapped my wiper gear boxes for after market ones as I couldnt get them out of my old bulkhead on my rebuild. Had nothing but trouble since. I'll bend those tabs over, n see if that works first.
As a matter of interest just bending the bottom of the gearbox and it’s now working again (drivers side wiper kept stopping etc). It’s a temporary fix as I’m stuck for time and it was raining. New gearboxes to be fitted soon. Cheers.
Hi Mike Hope your well looking for a bit of guidance got an issue with my wipers every thing works fine on intermittent and normal and even with washer but as soon as I put them on fast either don’t work at all or slow and jerky and some times ok !! Thought I would ask before ripping my dash out Regards Neil
Thought I would take out the dash and check and would u believe it turned on wipers and there working fine now !!!! Defenders I know it not going to last but if not broke !! Hope u have a better week buddy
@@BritannicaRestorations you make so happy my family with your job. With all you're teaching i could easier repair a lot things on my father TDI 90 , mine Tdi 110 and mom a Freelander. I forget a TDv6 discovery 3. Grrrrrtteat job master.
I put new boxes on and watched them move with no wipers on and thought good they work. Put the whole dash back together plus steering wheel then put the wiper blades on and then watched one wiper work perfectly and the other wander about. Had to take the whole thing apart again, I'd lent my puller to a friend so had to make one to take the steering wheel off 😂 a whole day buggering around . A good lesson learned though
There a bloody nightmare, I've done a few of theses and the last one was on my own 200tdi defender, first thing was the cable was to long, just like yours. Then the passengers side did the same as yours so I had to take the wheel box out and bend the tab over to help it make contact and the last thing is the wipers don't clean the screen fully in the middle, I noticed yours doing the same! I've left it in the end as it always passes the MOT... Our TD5 hi cap has just had the whole lot replaced after 19 years and I had that done my a Land Rover specialist I use for our company Land Rovers, he knows his stuff and even with him I had problems... After 6 months the spindle pulled through the motor so I took it back for him to sort out and after replacing the motor with a brand new one the bloody thing kept stopping midway, also the throw was to much and the N/S blade was coming off the screen by 3-5 inches. It's all sorted now but that was all OEM parts and done by somebody who knows his Land Rovers!
I don't get a lot of problems with the actual motor - the park switch is a different story! When we stripped this out, the grease was dry and almost none existent on the drive cable Seen a few wiper tubes with bad bends and kinks in them As for wiper stroke - I don't think you can get the middle to wipe properly not unless you move the arm on the spindle - then it parks bad Defenders are always a compromise ! Mike
OEM or Original Equipment Manufacture supplied Land Rover for production vehicles - but sell on the open market too for example Lucas supplied a lot of electrical parts to LR but also sell the parts to the public a bit cheaper
Hi mike, my dad has done a wiper motor and gearbox change over, the laugh is the wipers are going in the wrong direction, So he swopped the new motor back over for the old motor. My dad is asking what can cause the new motor to go the wrong way around?
Thanks!
Thank you! And thanks for the Tdi reply!

Yeap = and that is why I pressure test engines and gearboxes prior to fitting to check for leaks

New parts eh?
I was wondering if these were made for a bigger cable?

So when they are in park position, remove them and put them horizontal = I assume you have done this?

Sounds to me like you have the wheel boxes upside down - the cable goes to the top
Thanks Mike, just watched the video again and you are right. Not sure how I missed that. Will fix it in the morning. Thanks again.
You're welcome!

Brilliant video. Thank you mate. Although I think you made it look easier than it is. I guess I'll find out.
Good tips, mine has the very same problem so I’ll try just bending gearboxes first.
As a matter of interest just bending the bottom of the gearbox and it’s now working again (drivers side wiper kept stopping etc). It’s a temporary fix as I’m stuck for time and it was raining. New gearboxes to be fitted soon. Cheers.
I've installed 2002 new style wiper boxes on my 1999 Td5 they are easy to installed and better wipers.
Lol I had the same problem two weeks ago, one steering box was fine one wasn't. Took me a while to figure out
Strange eh?
Oh well another one for the book!
Mike
The master at work😊😊
What does replacing the cable do? Looks like the okay in mine is in the little gearboxes... i hope.
Have you noticed any quality issues with using a Britpart wiper rack /cable?
OK but not bent over to keep the rack in place
Carry on wipers ,the latest in the carry on series.
How do you remove the plastic cowling that blocks the driver's side wheel box from coming in ?
You can get the screws out using one of these

Could be anything -- dry rack or bad electrics - but if it is sometimes ok then I would be looking at electrical contacts

What grease do you recommend for the wheelboxes and wiper motor gear box? Thanks.
Wheel bearing grease
Thank you. And thanks for all your excellent videos too, they are always a fantastic source of advice before doing a job myself.
Thanks a lot 🎉

Hello, i lived in Peru, and i have a defender 90 engine 19j. Do yo have ideas for improve the engine. Thank a lot

@@BritannicaRestorations How about moving one wiper by a couple of splines higher and then it would clean middle
I was told that OEM only meant that the manufacturer had made something for Land Rover but not necessarily the particular parts they are now making

The steel plate in the motor can be fitted 180 degrees out of drive, and the wiper boxes and be fitted upside down
@@BritannicaRestorations I will let him know mike, thanks very much for that!
What kind of grease did you put in there?
low temp bearing grease
How'd you bend the tabs over? vice? hammer? I've got the same issue.
Vice and hammer
@@BritannicaRestorations perfect. thanks
Britpart wheel boxes ?
Seem to be all the same
Perfecto!
I had a problem with end float just bent the tab a bit more they were Allmakes probably Chinese
Seems common even on alleged OEM stuff
Is that a 115° or 130° wiper motor?
was marked 115
And the moral of the story. Sorry, the moral of the modern story;
