- Can a miter saw be used to cut metal? YES
While it is not ideal, you can use a miter saw for cutting metal as long as you use the right blade. However, since the miter saw was not designed specifically to cut through this type of hard material, you need to factor in what kinds of applications you'll be using it for.
Concerting the miter saw is as simple as checking the speed and changing the blade.
You need to make a few adjustments to clamping abilities and then you are cutting like the best.
My 18v Miter saw with this cold cut blade is able to slice through whatever i can throw at it.
I chose the Tenru steel-pro Stabiliser but i have seen promising looking blades from other brands like Diablo and Dewalt.
The blade seen in the video can be found here

You helped me so much I’m building solar panel rack for my Land Cruiser and I needed to cut the Uni strut and I was really scared but I had the right blade luckily and the RPMs match the saw but you helped me so much thank you I just had to tell you that because I searched and searched and looked at other videos that were absolutely no help Thank you!😊
I converted a 10" miter into a steel cutter.. however a CAUTION to those out there. Clamping the work is ABSOLUTELY crucial. There is no holding the piece down and trimming a bit off.. the blade will catch the piece and take it from you, probably slicing you as well. I was trying to simply trim a little piece of tubing.. thinking it was just like wood, easy peasy, hold it down. The blade caught the work and shot it out the back, straight through multi layers of a fan. It traveled maybe 30 feet at least after that! It is amazing the cuts you get, but please keep things clamped.
I have recently learned it's not necessary to clamp the waste side down, only the work side.
Thanks a lot bro/sir, that's A REAL GOOD ADVICE for everyone, as in rookies, diy'ers or professional craftsmen, hat down... SAFETY FIRST, we have one life ONLY and our limbs don't grow back❗❗❗🙏🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
PLEASE FOLKS... Never NEVER stay in front of the blade while cutting ... NO MATTER WHAT❗
Great tip on the spacing 👍
Just want to say thanks for the career advice. Didn't get exactly what I aimed for but landed an awesome job in the industrial construction sector. We're working right through covid so very happy to be on the tools during this thing. Cheers buddy. All the best to you and yours
Good to hear mate. Remember you are never stuck in one field/sector and if you want a change its always there! Good luck to you in your future!
Really great video mate. Appreciate it!
Awesome video mate ... I like the blade speed tip something often forget to consider or not think of.
Awesome thanks for the review and instruction!
thank you for the tip at the end.
Thank you for sharing this information! 😀
Nice video and and advice for the spacing. I have a 60 year old band saw at my work and it's such a burden trying to get it to cut straight. I think I've talked my boss into getting a setup similar to yours and now I will be able to cut angles as well.
I've been looking for a good blade to cut exhaust pipe which would be easy work for this blade. I'm going to give it a try!
Good information 🤙🏽
Yeah that is pretty crazy with that sick bar, very impressive with the exhaust pipe though that was some pretty thick s*** too LOL but I don't blame you for not wanting to rectal blade.
Great video
Finn youre a legend
Thanks mate
What blade would recommend for this saw MilwaukeeM18FMS305-0 to cut metal , thanks for the video , good job
how many cuts can it make? whats the downside? in economical perspective is it viable vs abrasive chop saw?
I had an L1A1 SLR once, there were many like it, but that one was mine. Terms learned in Basic Training never leave you. I am guessing the tattoo with cartridges has some military significance also. Could you tell me the name of the channelled square steel section used as a spacer on the outdoor saw, with the edges folded inward. I have a job where l need the same profile. Cheers
I suspect that the bar you chickened out of cutting (for good reason) would have cut easier if you'd clamped it at 90 degrees. Like, on the edge. That's subject, of course, to the max. cut thickness on the saw. But if the workpiece fit edge-on it would have presented less area to the blade and gone easier. (For the same reason as your back-space suggestion at the end.) Just a suggestion mate. Great vid, BTW. Well done.
I can not recall specifically but that might of maxed out the depth of cut, I think for sure I could get through it… but your right I chickened out. No point ruining a blade just to cut a test. I have used the blade a lot since then on pipe and I am still really impressed both in the cheap saw and the blade
Good to see you here John. Love your work!!
Just getting into knife making as a hobby and was looking at me battery ozito saw and thinking shit I reckon she can do it surely there's a blade that can do it bloody legend googled her and you're the second video that pops up the other bloke fidgets with the arbor and slaps a grinding disk on it cause the cutting discs can't spin that fast but I don't want to make a 10mm cut so your video was perfect exactly what I'm looking for to cut bars down now I can save money on 300mm and just get big bastards for half the price and chop em down will be a max of 6mm so the blade will live forever if I go slow and let her keep cool
Tools do have feelings and i care.
I have a Bosch GCM 8 SJL Mitersaw with 5.500 rpm, can I use my saw to cut steel pipes with this blade or can you recommend a good blade for me?
Use cutting fluid when cutting thick bar and you should be fine mate. I always wondered about putting a stone blade in my flexvolt dewalt mitre saw but since its a 1200 quid saw I've never had the balls to do it. I am tempted to make a clamp and arm that I can attach a cheap large angle grinder to and make a solid guard so that I can cut through steel as though it's a mitre saw!
I had this same idea. I have an electric miter saw, and it's a Ryobi, so I bought a steel cutting blade and I will be trying it soon.
These comments never have updates
I am pumped to see this as I just got a really beat up Makita compound slider for $20 and it now works OK. I was wondering if applying wax as a Lubricant would help the blade live longer? Are these blades designed for specific RPM?
I know it's been 3 months since you posted but at the 1:10 mark this blade says 5800 rpm max.
Tools have feelings, too
do you think it will cut those black magnets
Finn, very cool. I have a 12" dewalt, do you think a 12" metal blade would work? Could a 10" blade work on a 12" machine? Maybe I should just get a 7.25 machine a roll with that, IDK. Thanks
If the speeds match up it should work, I don’t know about spindle sized and what depth of cuts you will be able to achieve.
With all the different saws having different guarding you would be best to measure with a tape and see.
12 inches is huge, in general you are in the territory of real cold cut saws and the blades start costing half the price of the expensive machines themselves.
Really depends what you plan on cutting and how much you plan on cutting
also tip use rubbing alcohol to spray on the blade when cutting it will super cool the blade DONT USE FORCE mild gentle pressure will save breaking teeth
I wonder if you could make the cut in that thick barstock in one go if you had compressed air blowing on it.
To help clear out the chips Or cool the blade?
I think it would make the cut with a fresh battery and more patience. But fear of cooking the disk held me off pushing it to the limits
@@Finntheweekendwarrior Both. Would be especially beneficial for stainless steels (when using a blade built for stainless steels)
Nate? try licking it first for cooling if that works then air might be worth trying and saves on the tongue
I noticed you had a half of a Mikita cutting disc how did that broke in half ??
I cut it in half to make a knife
Hi, can you cut aluminium with this blade?
Hey man I need to cut two things I need to cut wood for a shed project and I also need to cut a trailer coupler witch is 1/4 thick I'd like to buy a saw that can handle wood and thick hard metal my budget is a big deal so I'd like to know what saw should I buy to cut metal and 2x4s ? I don't mind buying multiple blades and 1 saw I want a saw that will cut the metal perfectly.
If you only need to cut the trailer coupler metal rarely go for this option, get a decent saw and pay for the blade. Just check the operating speeds and your set.
You seem to be cutting some hefty metals, but I mainly use copper/brass/copper. Largest size is 60mm rod aluminium. Reckon this would handle it without killing it?
Can’t see it having a problem with softer materials
Do you think if I put a blade to cut metal, cut well, you had to make modifications to the saw
I made no modifications, as long as the blade is rated for the rpms of the saw you are happy
How do I check that the speed of the saw matches the blade?
both the saw and the blade will have the max RPM. Usually you will need a smaller diameter metal blade. he was using a 7 1/4" metal blade
For a 6mm piece of steel, do I need the expensive 'cold cut' saw?
Depends how often you cut
What exactly did you do? Simply switched from a wood blade to a carbide steel blade? Miter saws spin too fast for metal, so how did you slow down the rpm?
he was using a 7 1/4" metal blade. this way both the blade and the saw had similar RPM ratings.
Great tips heres one for you
Here's a no brainer guys buy a 12" saw and put 10" blade in walla you just slowed the blade down
if you are paying $300 for saw blade I hope they gave you vasoline with it, Diablo 7 1/4 steel demon $30 and I have been cutting !/4 steel plate for a month and still haulin ass unbelievable! and I'm powering it with old 5400rpm skill saw
They don’t actually come with annything just in a big plastic shrink formed packing
When you cut that thick cut from the side not the with it would be easier on the saw and the blade less cutting serfice
I purchased the product and when used to trim the steel ste two or more times, it was not usable after that
what steel
@@Finntheweekendwarrior iron....
Is it the correct blade? Do you have the right speeds?
My blade still works great.
@@Finntheweekendwarrior What is the required speed
Check the manufactures directions. It will be written on whatever product you purchased
Its got a lot of gravity 😂
Freakin jar head 😂 “there are many like it, but this one is mine”
You didn’t even show how to do any converting of the sort!
Thank goodness I watched this video, I was going to buy a wood blade to cut metal! That's the secret to converting a chop saw into a metal cutter, buy a metal cutting blade? Thanks Captain Obvious.
You saw is 7.-1/4or 10 inch
7 1/4
@@Finntheweekendwarrior ok
I have a ryoby 10 inch saw for wood you think if I chance the blade for cut metal working good
Check the speed of your saw. It will be written on a information plaque, you will be able to get a 10 inch version
Ok thank you so much
1:45 Bro WTF?!?!?
Diablo Steel Demon Ferrous Metal-Cutting Saw is so bad ass it can cut Stainless Steel .
For a second or two
@@Finntheweekendwarrior They have a new one that is made for Stainless Steel.
I have used big cold cuts for stainless I didn’t know they made ones this size, I guess just more teeth
Why speed up the cuts? people watching would get a better idea of what the blade cuts like by watching its real life performance. if its going to take half an hour per cut, sped up to 3 minutes say, we don't get any idea how good/bad it is.
It doesn’t work , the blade turns to fast it’ll work for awhile but not for long
