Coming from an M2 competition owner: The regular M2 is 100 percent a "real" M car! Not all M cars have bespoke "S" engines, its more about the driving experience and the M2 chassis delivers that in spades.
True! The M4 is more than an buisness man who only Party hard at holiday. The M2 is more than an College student who party whole week, like the old M‘s. 😂
I have one of these (2018 last build run). I get endless comments: THE SOUND. T H E S O U N D !!! Something Competition owners will never get! Enough performance. Spot on video.
For those wondering, that growling sound when you let off the gas is an anti-lag system. The S55B30T0, S63B44T0/U/4, N55B30T0, S58B30T0, B58B30C/O1/M1 and the BMW I8 3cyl engine all have this anti-lag system that only happens when you have the engine to Sport+ mode. Great video, I'll give a little more depth into the engine on top of what you mentioned about oil cooling. In reality, the only thing carried over from the base N55 engine was the block, even then, not the same as what you would find in a M235i. @@niallcorcoran4437 Thats not what a modern interpretation of something is. And the M2 is in no way a facelift 1M. They are entirely different cars. Using that logic you could also say the 7 Series is just a facelift 5 Series or the 8 Series is a slightly different 6 Series.
Recently test drove a 2018 shadow black edition and thoroughly enjoyed it. I needed slightly more space so opted for the M4. The M2 definitely sounds better and has a go-kart feel to it!
As expected, another super articulate and well thought out commentary on a great car. I'm an m235i owner that's eyeing an M2C sometime in the next few years. I'd love your thoughts on the M2C in a video like this one. Also, I put Dinan springs on the m235i and, with a subsequent alignment, the car awoke quite a bit. It's not as direct as my ZHP but it was a pretty dramatic improvement. Love the car. Just feeling the M lust.
As someone who bought one of these 9 months ago I have to agree in almost all aspects. I had the same issue calling this a successor to some of the previous BMW's and I think I would peg this as an E46 successor. I bought mine in a manual and it turns about 2500-3000 going down the highway and it has so much torque there is basically no need to downshift at all unless you are really looking to get into it. At 3450 pounds this car is so direct, grip is wonderful & power is there, although I am currently stage 1 itching to go to stage 2. I have a feeling I will end up keeping this car for another 2-3 years and probably end up building it towards 550-600rwhp which will probably be the sweet spot for this car imo.
Took this on the autobahn (was actually a CS) and did 170. Really fun little car and the right size. BUT steering feel was pretty disconnected/numb. Wish it had the feel of a car like the e46 M3.
True story. I have a G37S and was going to trade it in for an M235i because why not? Then I saw a cheap 986. Got hooked. Then I saw a cheap 996. Got hooked again! End of story, still kept the G for a daily and bought both the 986 and 996, for $18k less than the M235i would have cost at the time. Terrible decisions? Maybe lol! Good luck with your decision!
I have 2017 m2 and 2011 e90 m3. I feel like they compliment each other. I might trade up to an m2c though as I like an engine that wants to rev, but it’s a lot of dough for that trade.
Bought this car new in 2018, the LCI, DCT. After 2 months did a stage 1 tune, 410PK. 2019 the comp came out, everybody bashing on mine... It's not a real M... It's an M light.... Not an S engine.... Today, 2025, I stil drive it as a daily, 150K KM. The only problem I had was the taillights (like many) and 2y ago the charge pipe problems (also like many). And that's it for the problems. I don't track it, I don't drive like a hooligan. I let it get warm and drive sporty. I do everything with it, some years even go skiing in the Alpes. In today's DNA, people ar jealous of the (fake)M2 LCI 2018. I still get the same feeling when I get in as the first day I drove it. Like the steering, it has the perfect weight in it, precise feeling. Turn the steering 1mm and the car reacts. The LCI, all that sh°t "it's not a drivers car because it's not manual". If you drive 150k km with a car, in real world, I'm glad I have a DCT in traffic. And the shifts you get with the DCT in the M2, I love it. I love that it's a bid clunky when driving slow. I love it when in sport+ with the paddles, you feel the gear shifts in your back. It's called character. Consumption, never have reset the BC, 11L / 100km. Who does not want that with that performance? 400bhp it's all you need on the road.
I owned both this car and the comp and to be honest it’s not really the S55 that sounds worse it’s the exhaust on the comp. As soon as I changed it with a AWE it sounded amazing. The N55 is a bit deeper but that Metallicy sound that people dislike is coming from the exhaust mostly not the S55.
I have driven an M4 and just drove an OG M2, and I had soooo much more fun in the M2. It sounds much better, is more engaging to drive and the limits are much more approachable. Also, the DCT is just as good, but just have to drive in sport + for those heavenly firm shifts. Engagement and fun is more important to me than all out performance as a car enthusiast. My favorite car I have owned is the Honda S2000, and this is just as fun and much more practical. It's on my short list for my next car.
I still think the S55 sounds like crap. I had M4 before getting my M2 and it's so different. M4 is fast however, and that's why I totalled it in the rain too ;(
Hey Tedward - What is your opinion on DCT vs manual on a bmw? I'm in the market for an m4 in the near future and I'd be interested in your opinion on both the transmissions. I'm going to be dailying it, (I currently daily a manual e46). However, I'm leaning more towards DCT because of the driveability - would you get a manual or a dct M car?
This is a tricky one for 2 reasons. Number one: BMW manual transmissions tend to feel rubbery and are not especially rewarding to operate. Number 2: They all have turbo engines now and DCT allows them to stay in boost between shifts which is incredible for acceleration. I do still enjoy driving a manual BMW but don't let the "save the manuals" ideal ruin a great DCT in a car that was designed for it. Drive both. make the call based on what YOU think. Don't let anyone tell you what to drive.
@@TedwardDrives Great answer - All my buddies rib me for the idea of not having a manual sports car but I like the versatility of the DCT so much more.... your channel has grown last time since we spoke. Onwards and upwards! May I ask, though if you were to buy an f80 are you taking DCT or manual? I'd love see what u would like
No it’s not, the m2 has the f80 m3 chassis with wide body same as comp. Its technically way different to the 235i, the main difference m2 to the comp is the engine.
@Tedward I love the M2 but I want to ask you how is the fuel consumption for the N55 M2 at constants speeds? (100km/h - 120km/h - 140km/h) From what I saw until now on the internet it's pretty bad. I'm interested to know if this is an issue with the car shape which is not very aerodynamic and has a bad drag coefficient. I saw many videos and the new Supra is much better, even the M4 but not with much. What do you think?
I've driven the Comp, but I'm looking to get the N55. Some say the interiors are different, but I cannot tell the difference with the exception of the shift ferocity button vs sport mode button. What are the other differences?
got mine last year, if you don't track the car you won't notice the difference between the S55 and the N55 on the road. Also worth nothing this is not the same as the 2 series N55, it does have the oil sump the S55 has and forged internals. If the -40 Hp still bothers you get a stage1 tune and you're there with the comp lol. If anyone reading this is on the fence, don't be, this thing is a little rocket and is a fucking blast to drive have been loving mine and knock on wood they run strong
Great video! Love how you were reving that thing a lot even with so little gas left 😂 11 miles left if I saw right? I still hesitate a lot on what my next car will be, an entry level 911 (996-997), e92 m3 or the M2. Tough choices! but your reviews help a lot 😁
Just picked up a manual 2019. Love the engine (want to turn off the damn fake engine noise). Love it. Like the steering feel actually. A little bouncy is my only comment.
A friend of mine gave me the keys of a M140i just before fitting and lsd. The torque was incredible, and dare I say it, too much for my liking. It's bloody fast for sure, but the shifter felt very rubbery, without the lsd even on the dry the back really tells you it looks for somewhere to put power. I'm just old game, but I liked my e36 m3 better everyday. It feels more special, more connected, older that's for sure, but any day starts well with a proper M car (don't worry, I also daily drive a 530d e39, stincky torquey diesel aha)
Originally wanted an m4 but the lack of options has me looking at an m2. Thoughts on the main differences? It will be my first beemer, is the m4 that much better?
Good review, definitely take an old M2 over an M235i. Like the older M2, good value on the used market relative to the M2C. I have not had the chance to sit in the new M2C seats, but the do look better than the old M2 seats, which seem very budget orientated. That said, not a dealer breaker!
Looking at them on video, I was thinking exactly the same as you about the seats. But when I saw them IRL... Honestly they look and feel fantastic! I love them. Also more comfortable for long distances. :) But don't get me wrong I love bucket seats too.

Damn these videos are so good, just pure ASMR driving. Its almost as if im behind the steeringwheel myself. Great commentary aswell.
Currently have a 2014 VW Golf R, seriously considering one of these as it's replacement.
Do it. I owned one for a year and as long as you're ok with the lower quality interior materials, it's an amazing car.
@@TheBodyguard619 lower quality than a Golf? Can't imagine.
@@TheBodyguard619 Lol dude get real
I have an 18 M2 and my GF has a 18 R. Couldn't be more different, but a killer combo. If you're looking to make a change from your R however I couldn't think of a better option
Just made the switch from an ‘18 Golf R to ‘18 m2. Best decision I’ve ever made.
I like the n55 m2 way more than the s55
This is actually a great review, and exactly what I was searching for with some comparison to the E92 M3.
Someone need to make some N55 asmr 🤤🤤🤤🤤
Your friend had to be WHIPPING around a corner to do that, that’s lowkey a flex.
great vid! I wanted a M2 for some time now and after watching I want one right NOW!
I said it before, and I'll say it again. The M2 (and the M2 comp) is the 2020 interpretation of the E46 M3
Yeah, I was thinking the same.
no. 1M.
@@niallcorcoran4437 1M isnt exactly modern.
@@Datoda *scratches head in similar/same design element as m2*
you do realize that M2’s are glorified 1M’s, which are glorified 135’s, which would mean M2’s are mostly also just glorified 235’s, yeah? N55 was put in 1er’s so please tell me how they’re so different. also insanely similar design elements and looks. 2 series literally looks like a facelifted facelift 1er
@@niallcorcoran4437 Thats not what a modern interpretation of something is. And the M2 is in no way a facelift 1M. They are entirely different cars. Using that logic you could also say the 7 Series is just a facelift 5 Series or the 8 Series is a slightly different 6 Series.
this thing makes such a great sound from the inside
It's mostly fake. I've come to terms with that and embrace it now. It's an enjoyable sound!
I am looking into buying an M2 in the future. Good video.
Recently test drove a 2018 shadow black edition and thoroughly enjoyed it. I needed slightly more space so opted for the M4. The M2 definitely sounds better and has a go-kart feel to it!
Great not to see you butchering a cold engine 👍👍
I’m not a monster
As expected, another super articulate and well thought out commentary on a great car. I'm an m235i owner that's eyeing an M2C sometime in the next few years. I'd love your thoughts on the M2C in a video like this one.
Also, I put Dinan springs on the m235i and, with a subsequent alignment, the car awoke quite a bit. It's not as direct as my ZHP but it was a pretty dramatic improvement. Love the car. Just feeling the M lust.
This car is so slept on! N55 and S55 are both good, but it's preference at that point.
Finally someone who shuts the hood the right way!!!
I drive one every day have zero regrets. Best M car avail today would be my humble opinion.
This video has made me want one of these, so thanks for that
Just bought a manual one and waiting for delivery. This video is making it really hard to wait 😭😭
Wherever I hear a more modern BMW singing away I’m worried all those lovely engine voices come from the speakers...
Spiritual successor to the e36 m3! It's much closer to the e36 in size.
Took this on the autobahn (was actually a CS) and did 170. Really fun little car and the right size. BUT steering feel was pretty disconnected/numb. Wish it had the feel of a car like the e46 M3.
I have a g37xs 2013 and im ready to upgrade soon. This looks like a real good candidate 🔥
This would feel so light and nimble I comparison!
@@TedwardDrives i would definitely need to test drive👍
@@rodsalvador3608 hahaha awesome story man. I mean the 996 is a beauty too. You got both of them in manual??
@@TTGamingTrinh yep, all manuals!
I Love My M2...great review.
It is great to see automotive RUclipsrs based in greater Boston!
Ive got a 2017 LCI and it manages to frighten me when driven in a spirited manner on the street..
Well, I've done it...just traded the Golf R in on a 2019 M2 Comp in Long Beach Blue. Can't wait to pick it up now!
Good choice!
i like cars
Then your on the right channel my friend 👍
I still think the S55 sounds like crap. I had M4 before getting my M2 and it's so different. M4 is fast however, and that's why I totalled it in the rain too ;(
when S55 bite they bite HARD!

I’ll admit I’ve gotten on the wrong way before 😂
Hey Tedward - What is your opinion on DCT vs manual on a bmw?
I'd love see what u would like
Both versions are great but to those arguing about the M2 vs M2C - it’s basically stacking up an upgraded m235i vs a smaller M3/4.
No it’s not, the m2 has the f80 m3 chassis with wide body same as comp. Its technically way different to the 235i, the main difference m2 to the comp is the engine.
Hey thats blue hills!! I love going for rides there
In regards to the EPS, I prefer the feel of the mechanical steering in my base model 328 than the electrical system in my M4.
Of course it’s an True M car, maybe even the best on sale
The n55 m2 is no longer on sale
@Tedward I love the M2 but I want to ask you how is the fuel consumption for the N55 M2 at constants speeds? (100km/h - 120km/h - 140km/h) From what I saw until now on the internet it's pretty bad. I'm interested to know if this is an issue with the car shape which is not very aerodynamic and has a bad drag coefficient. I saw many videos and the new Supra is much better, even the M4 but not with much. What do you think?
Dang it you read my mind because I was looking at buying the 2 series
I’m not the greatest fan of BMW’s but this and the E31 8-Series are the exceptions.
this is a killer value on the used market
I've driven the Comp, but I'm looking to get the N55. Some say the interiors are different, but I cannot tell the difference with the exception of the shift ferocity button vs sport mode button. What are the other differences?
Good review bro. Looking to pick this up manual
got mine last year, if you don't track the car you won't notice the difference between the S55 and the N55 on the road.
Haha thanks. I actually stopped for gas during this drive 😂
Ok...so...sell/Auction the ZHP to get one of these in a Manual? 🤔
Just picked up a manual 2019. Love the engine (want to turn off the damn fake engine noise). Love it. Like the steering feel actually. A little bouncy is my only comment.
Oops. Meant to say 2017. No oil temp gauge
I love my OG M2 (N55b engine!)
Yes those shifters are like pencil erasers!!!! Ahhh it drives me nuts
Great vid! Since you’ve driven so many cars, Do you have a top 5 faves?
Not bad review. You have exceptional taste. I hope you review the 2018 X4 M40i, next
I’m thinking about getting an m series for my next car for sure
