U.S. Assault Ship & F-35 Fighter Jets Arrive in Philippines to Against China
The Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1), carrying at least 10 F-35B fighters, the U.S. Marine Corps’ short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) variant of the supersonic fifth-generation F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter, arrived in Subic Bay, the Philippines in preparation for a joint military exercise with Australian and Philippine forces. The Philippines and its treaty ally, the United States, immediately condemned the latest confrontation near the Second Thomas Shoal, where two Philippine navy-operated supply boats and two Philippine coast guard escort ships had sailed to deliver food and other supplies to Filipino forces in a long-marooned navy ship that serves as a territorial outpost. China's actions were strongly condemned by foreign diplomats in the Philippines, including the ambassadors from treaty partner the U.S., the European Union and Japan. The U.S. stands with the Philippines and partners in vehemently condemning the PRC's repeated illegal and dangerous actions against Philippines vessels.
