I remember back in 68 when I reported to NAS Lemoore, they had been given the Ney award for food excellence. The food was superb.

Having spent 20+ years in the USMC, I can say the food was good most of the time. The long hours in an extremely hot galley is difficult. What's more difficult, feeding 1000 hungry Marines in the field in cold conditions. Thanks for this video.

The most difficult and under-appreciated Military Occupational Specialty in the US Marine Corps......is Food Service.
I don't have time to explain ALL of the subtleties a successful Mess Hall operation is based on, BUT...there are MANY factors the Mess Hall manager has to juggle and balance to serve three good meals a day.
I am a retired US Marine Corps Logistics Officer and, IMO, Food Service was the SINGULAR MOS with so MANY difficult variables to control, and a few which were UNCONTROLLABLE.
So, if you're a veteran and you ate at what you thought was a great "chow hall", almost ALL credit for that goes to the men and women and senior staff noncommissioned officers who successfully rode the "bucking bronco" a.k.a., Food Service.

Good and flavorful meals would be very important to recruits who are in the Military. Might even be a pivotal concern whether one would want to stay and make a career serving their country. All the young men and women in our Military, glad you are there for us, thank you for your service.

My son went into the Marine Corps under a security forces/infantry contract and found himself reclassed (translation=fucked) by the MC in his firsat 6 months and was really heartbroken by the event so I went to work on him as a Dad needs to do sometimes and told son, not everyone can be a SEAL or green beret or whatever else yada yada yada, but whatever you do end up doing its critical that you take pride in whatever you do and do your best. And I know he's not really happy doing what he's doing now I am however incredibly proud of him and of the other combat-support Marines because you guys kick ass and you're doing something really important and it's not going to last forever, and for that case neither is the career of a SEAL or green beret.

Hands down my best comrades of the corps, I never ate grits or rabbit until boot camp. They managed to get hot meals to us
once in a while while sitting in that dirt pit Saudi, to this day, I always wonder how they made the scramble eggs green? Anyway,
it was a blessing compare to getting packs of meals with numbers on it, thank god we ate through all those hot dogs from
the 80s stock but then when you open a meal like chicken a la king, I was begging for those hot dogs.

Someone asked "Are soldiers stupid?" and a paratrooper answered this:
    "Yes, they are.
Nobody likes to be called stupid, but everybody knows that for some professions you need to be smart and for others... well, not quite so much. I was a soldier in a regular army myself for many years and it was crystal clear to me even before I signed up that I would be around all kinds of morons and idiots. I met some simple soldiers who were quite smart, but the higher the rank the dumber it gets. Extended military service obviously causes brain atrophy. I wasn't the brightest person either, so there was no problem.
In my experience soldiers of guerilla and liberation armies usually are an exception. These persons didn't choose a military career, but volunteered to fight for a cause. Especially in Kosovo, where I fought with the Kosovo Liberation Army I was surprised with the high intellectual level of many soldiers in my unit. Most of them where in student movements before they joined the armed struggle. When the war was over they immediately demobilized and went back to civil life.
It's quite funny to read the other answers that are posted here that want you to convince otherwise. The military needs people to get a certain job done and no thinkers and intellectuals."
