  • The idea came to me while I was talking with a student. Can you use a cellphone camera to find an asteroid in the night sky? This project was super-simple. Maybe that is why I enjoyed it so much.

    Did a bit of research and it apparently gets as high as 5.1!? Madness. Very cool video.

      When our orbits are particularly favorable, I could see 5.1 happening. It was a fun little project! Also realized a few days ago that it might work for finding Uranus and Neptune - the two non-naked eye planets. Might be a while before I have decent weather to try it, but finding them would be really cool!

      I have to drive a little bit, too much light pollution at my house.
      I have a telescope, so I’m certainly looking forward to seeing this.
      Thanks for sharing this information 😊❤

    My smartphone needs a compass for this to work right?

      It shouldn't need a compass. This really only requires the camera to work, for you to know the right region of the sky to point the camera towards and for you to be able to match up the stars in the photo with whatever planetarium app or star chart you like. I didn't use my compass at all when I did this.

      Here’s hoping for a clear night over Arkansas on December 21st.
      Happy Solstice ❤

    Did you use the regular camera app?

    • @astro151tccc
      @astro151tccc  9 месяцев назад

      Yes, just the regular camera on the iPhone 14. Use Night Mode on the camera to get the long exposure. The phone's internal sensors are always active, so you do need a tripod in order for the camera to let you take a 30-sec exposure. Once the phone senses that it is perfectly stationary, it will give the option for up to a 30-sec exposure.

      @@astro151tccc all IPhones have the compass chip. Most Androids do not anymore, cost cutting
