For instance I believe my first goal was to make a calculator, with a UI and everything.
Having a goal will direct you. The other thing you should do, is not skip the basics.
Looping constructs, arithmetic operators, and other boring sounding stuff are what any program is made from. Complex ideas are made of simple functions.
