- In 2004 NASCAR made it's first change to the points format in nearly 30 years. The Chase For The NEXTEL Cup was introduced to try and inject excitement into NASCAR's season long title battle. What ensued in its inaugural season was a historic 10 race battle for the title that forever changed the face of the sport. This was The First Chase.
Thanks For Watching, this video took well over three months to research and make and I hope you enjoy.

Legitimately the greatest Chase of the Chase Era and it all literally came down to the final race. Kurt hits that wall and Johnson becomes an 8 time champ in 2016 theoretically. What a freaking season.
all JJ needed to do at miami, when it was all said and done, was pass the biff. that's how close it was.
most underrated Nascar content creator, keep up the good work man
Facts
This creator takes us through those adrenaline defining moments that most of us forgot. Hats off good sir!
And thank you!!!!!!
Kurts blue and yellow Irwin livery is one of my all time favorites.
This is some pretty good content. It's always nice to find someone putting in this much work who I haven't discovered yet. I came here from the Spingate video which has a lot of hits. In both cases you've managed to create a rather detailed work on a complete story, but this video is an even more impressive feat.
To get more views you might consider dividing up future videos if they are this long. As much as I personally love the large video, and as much as the RUclips Algorithm loves long collection videos from established channels, a single long video won't do as much to drive RUclips to a small channel. Releasing something like this in parts over multiple days (or weeks) might help drive repeated views to the channel. Here you have some natural dividing points between races to cut with and could got to 5 or 3 parts easily. This will also keep you from having larger gaps in content delivery while you're working on a new project.
That said, don't release multiple videos for the same thing on the same day. RUclips Algorithm traditionally does NOT like that. Established channels can get away with it but RUclips isn't going to reward the extra videos as much.
But don't be afraid to create the content you care about most.
if ryan newman won the races that he started in pole this year he would have had 11 wins!!
Not gonna lie, the Hendrick tragedy got me again
Watching this, I felt like I was watching those old Speed channel documentaries. This was incredibly well made, I really enjoyed this. Thank you for making this! You earned this sub!!
This was incredible! As a Busch fan, I thoroughly enjoy reliving the 04 chase!
Its so crazy how close it came to him not winning. The broken wheel could have ended so bad, but it happened at the best possible time on the track for him to make it to pit road.
Undeserved for Busch should have been a more deserving racer Dale jr but a b.s. cursing penalty and Carl Edwards wrecking Jr cost him
I'm a Busch fan too but if you saw that entire season like I did race by race then you should know Jeff Gordon Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr won 19 of the 36 races that year and even in the Final 10 Kurt still wasn't dominant at all and by pure luck beat out a driver who won 4 of the final 6 races. Sorry but that was the beginning of the end of credibility for NASCARs champion. And it's been Mickey more so than not since.
My dude, this is amazing.
It's so good to see people showing nascar the respect it deserves
💯
I love the comeback story of Jimmie. It always warms my hearts and opens my tear ducts whenever I rewatch this video. This is undoubtedly my favourite era for points formats and car sounds in NASCAR, while my favourite era for the cars themselves is the mid-late 80s, and for the drivers, it's the early 90s.
I remember this season. This was a great recap and trip down memory lane. I really wanted Jr to win. Thanks for the great content.
Man deserves more subscribers hes a great storyteller.
This is some of the best NASCAR content I’ve ever seen, and what a throwback to one of my favorite seasons.
Mark was so fast the last half of this chase. I remember thinking he could win every one of these races, but much like his entire career, bad luck wouldn’t have it.
you do a awesome job of showing the intensity of every single moment. awesome video
Great video man. This must have taken an enormous amount of effort to make.
That was amazing! Keep pumping out content like this, my man 😎🤟🏻
You did a great job with this first chase video. I thoroughly remember the 2004 season and it was a pleasure to watch. Nascar was at its peak during the early to late 2000's.
Good stuff. Nice to see more small creators like myself on my recommended page.
Ya gotta do one for the 2014 Chase. The most chaotic imo
So Jimmie was on of the 4 with a legit chance at Homestead. He was never eliminated til the end.
I remember when Busch hugged Bill Weber after getting out of the car. I thought that was the coolest thing.
Awesome video, my man! This was a great find! I’ll always remember being at the first ever Chase race in ‘04 at Loudon! Enjoyed this video!!
This was an outstanding video bro! Literally you really good job
from the UK never watched NASCAR only F1 really love your videos tho so invested
bro i love this content i was a casual fan by this time this is good work bro
Looking at the 10 drivers, I realized you had 3 Roush guys, 2 HMS, Evernham, RYR, JGR, Penske and DEI all in competition for a title. 2021 had so few dominant teams. HMS, JGR and Penske were pretty much it. Plus 1 from Haas
RYR, Evernham, and DEI are gone...Roush is now RFK, and doesnt even run 3 cars(much less the 5 they put in the next years chase). Those 3 teams, Hendrick, Penske, Gibbs, have won all but 3(2011,2014,2017) of the championships since then.
Moreso, the 3 titles not won by them were won by teams/drivers who drove cars with engines and chassis prepared by one of those teams. Furniture Row and MTJ got their chassis and engines from Gibbs in 2017, and both Tony Stewart(2011}and Kevin Harvick(2014) won while driving for SHR, but with cars prepared by Hendrick.
In the championship 4 era, only newman in 2014 and Harvick in 2017,2018,2019 have made it to the final round in a car not built by Gibbs, Hendrick or Penske
REALLY well done production! My utmost congratulations and respect for making this. It's a masterpiece, and the attention this story deserved. Subscribed
Just stumbled on this channel good stuff bro.
I've watched this one and second chase at least 10 times each. GREAT WORK!
NASCAR culture is so fascinating. Great video!
found this channel & checked out the content & ended up subscribing before even watching one video & this is the first video i watched
Still in the middle of watching this, takes me back to when I was 9 watching this. This is epic superb editing ❤️
Absolutely wonderful content. I really enjoy NBR's videos. Great stuff! Thank you for these awesome vids. 👌
Holy moly that was a roller coaster! Even though I already knew who won the championship, that was still super intense and engaging. I don’t think we’ve seen a more intense Chase since tbh
I would like to say thank you😊😊😊. It takes a lot of time and effort to put these videos ❤❤. These videos make my day I watch them constantly especially the highlight videos. I can sit back go back in time for a few hours. It’s great. ❤❤😊😊❤😊
You know what's an amazing and awesome record to have and I just realized he had this record with this video. Kurt Busch not only won the very first Chase but he won the first Chase race as well I didn't even realize that until this video I had no idea he won New Hampshire. I knew he won three races but I didn't know which ones.
Just watched the atlanta race last night. Had no idea what they were talking about until i looked it up. That makes jimmy's win so much more emotional even if mark martin was the faster car
Mark Martin my favorite driver! Have plenty of merchandise to prove it! crowd favorite & never hated on. Showed respect & humble all his career. That’s a champ in my book 👌🏻
Most underrated Nascar content creator ever!
Great video. Brock Beard quality. Good stuff man
1:11:47 chills. Oh my God this documentary is amazing
This is amazing please do the other chases
The beginning of the end. Who knew this would be the least offending iteration of the “chase.”
Should've stuck with this. Much better than the playoffs. Literally just Winston with a 10 race shootout.
this format was honestly the best thing to happen to the sport, its a damn shame its gone.
Debatable.
@@GoodOlRoll it was much better than what we have now, to be honest. Proved that the "playoffs" style does in fact work, but only when done in the more conventional way.
@@thestarlightalchemist7333 there wasn't a need for the playoffs to begin with. The idea of splitting the season into two, essentially allowing someone who barely got into the top 10 in points by race 26 to win the championship, is stupid.
Outstanding and thank you !!!
Awesome video man!
Dont care what anyone says Kurt Busch was better with Roush Racing when he drove that number 97, After leaving Roush he was okay with Team Penske, but ever since then has not been on his game since
What an awesome video!
This is a really good video
You should do it videos about Dale Earnhardt trying to win Daytona 500 after 20 times!!!
Good Job! I've heard you love racing.
Great work. Just made a nascar fan outta me.
Amazing. Simply amazing. Will there be a first playoff version?
really, really good work
Why not next make one on the first playoffs?
I hope this shows Junior fans the cursing penalty did not cost Junior a championship with this video.
Clearly not since there is a junior fan on this video saying the penalty cost him the championship
Yeah. It was the two bad finishes and the cuss word. The penalty did zap momentum though. I think if it doesn’t happen things play out differently
It did the penalty made him need to push harder which caused a wreck so yes it did

That was fantastic!
You should do a video on the 2011 Stewart vs Edwards battle
I wonder how much of the chase series was recalled from memory
Sadler was my favorite driver! Man I wish he could've had better luck in the years since '04
That was beautiful😧
I miss that race package.
It looks so old man.
Like this happened 50 years ago.
You should do every chase up until 2014
Honestly 2014 can have a whole video one of the most interesting chases unfortunately harvick won but eh what you gonna do
@@kadens hypocritical cheater boi lol
This video should have 2 million views, not 2000. Wow.
The change to prevent Gordon from winning 7+ championships.
Gordon just wasn't good enough to win 7
My favorite did
and hand a bunch to Jimmie, granted he would have won a few regardless, but not 7

My favorite NASCAR season by a whole bunch, mainly due to my being 100% an Anti-Bowtie FORD man, and I started rootin for Kurt Busch and Greg Biffle in 2003 cuz Matt Kenseth has the personality of a wet mop....
Kurt Busch’s 2004 season
3 wins
8 top 5s
21 top 10s
Great video. 2004 as a great season in my book. As a 48 fan though, don’t you think you eliminated him a little too soon? He did finish 2nd only 8 out of it at in the end.
Did you watch all the way through? He got un-eliminated at Atlanta.
@@thestarlightalchemist7333 yes, I did and I know he did. Seeming him eliminate Jimmie in what in thought was too soon PO’d me i while I watching and I wrote the comment right after he turned black and white. I did write this prematurely and I couldn’t take it back. I admit that I jumped the gun.
You should do the 2005 chase
im not one of those JR fanatics, but i dont really think he deserved to lose his color til Darlington.....since ya know...he went into that race ahead of jimmie.....but i get it...that run in with Carl at Atl really killed his title shot.
29:29 can anybody explain to me what the controversy is that cost him the points?
I really don’t get it, I watched the scene 20 times and can’t hear anything even slightly controversial where they could fine him for?
Would be great if anybody could help me out, I’m really confused..
per wikipedia: "Following the race Earnhardt Jr. generated controversy for using profanity during a television interview following his win. During a question that asked about the importance of his then fifth Talladega Win Earnhardt Jr replied "It don't mean shit right now. Daddy's won here 10 times."
Earnhardt Jr. was fined $10,000 and docked 25 driver points for the violation. Had Earnhardt Jr. not been penalized, he would have still finished 5th in that years championship, finishing only 6 points behind Mark Martin for 4th.
Earlier in the year NASCAR president Mike Helton warned drivers to not use profanity while during radio and television interviews (in light of the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show controversy) and delivered a similar penalty to Johnny Sauter after he used profanity during a radio interview that occurred after a Busch Series race at Las Vegas in March 2004[6] as well as Ron Hornaday Jr. for comments following a Busch Series race in Dover in June 2004."
@@xSoccerxCorex thank you but WTF?!
How ridiculous is that!
His racing results were put down for the word shit?
That everyone says daily a million times?
Boy that is so ridiculously hypocritical, the American society is the most lying toxic environment on this planet..
I started loving nascar because of the unique racing but this confirms my believes from the beginning that it’s just entertainment bs and no real Motorsport.
The same shit like wrestling..
I still love the racing but we need a points system that every other true Motorsports series has.
Just points.
Nothing else.
The person with the most points wins and no stupid hypocritical lying organization can manipulate a race like this!
Why on earth do they ever follow these rules?
The teams could just make up their own series with all the teams and they can start using the cars they want and run the tracks they want!
Thank you very much for your information again.
It’s absolutely insane..
Is that 93 octane, Jeremy... ? 😂🤣🤣
This one hurts me!! This was juniors to win. Should have won it this year. 6 wins and was consistent. Just a couple wrecks and a cuss word

Posting for 7+ years… I hope you start to break out. 2.67K subs is not enough, you need more.
Also known as the beginning of the end.
Also as a dale jr fan i was mad as hell that they fined dale jr. That fine cost him the championship. He was excited. Like you coulda just fined him $$. That woulda been alright. He woulda tripled what he lost after he won the championship. Lol
He still would have lost by 113 points without the penalty
How come dale jr didn’t come back when he was ahead of Jimmie in points
Great video... but man the fans knew the Chase was bad news. But I think after the correct people won in 05 and 06 people felt it made not a big deal... then 2007 happened!
2007, makes me feel 3 emotions at once. Anger, Disgust, and Sadness. Anger at Brian France, Disgust at the format, and Sadness because Jeff Gordon was robbed. Also, did you know that the first two people to be robbed are Jeff Gordon and Jeff Gordon? Yeah. He was getting screwed right out of the gate.
@@GoodOlRoll I wouldn't blame the format for that, more the stupidity of running a season with two generations of cars. I may be a big fan of Jimmie, the chase, and the COT, but 2007 was, aside from the Daytona 500, really stupid.
@@thestarlightalchemist7333 actually I can blame Jeff Gordon not winning it all on the chase. Gordon was clearly the most dominant guy all year. 6 wins, 21 top 5s, 30 top 10s and an average finish of 7.3 is a lot better than 10 wins, 20 top 5s, 24 top tens and an average finish of 10.8. Take away the points reset, Gordon has him by 353 points. He could've sat out Phoenix and Homestead and still win the chanpionship.
You said the Homestead race came down to a green white checker. Are you saying that because there was three laps left in the race? Was you use dramatic license? Or just forgot that the green white checker rule didn't come in to play for a few more years
Incorrect. The green-white-checkered rule was implemented in July of 2004 after the controversial finish to the 2004 Aaron's 499.
@@sonnydog830 I stand corrected. But I'm not wrong when he said it came down to a GWC when there was 3 laps left in the race. GWC are two not three laps
@@TheDuck632 I went back and watched the race to check. It was GWC. When they get the "one to green" signal they put out 3 to the finish since crossing the line for the restart counts as a lap.
@@sonnydog830 again I stand corrected. Thank you I am being honest with you. I hate when people can't be polite on. I guess I hated the chase and every revamp of it I just pissy with someone talking about how great it is and I was wrong for that.
@@TheDuck632 fair enough. I've done something similar before. It happens to the best of us.
Every race in a nutshell: the caution came out when Carl Edwards crashed
Or when Robby Gordon did something.
2:03 Did you mean New Hampshire?
R Gordon reminds me of Wrecky Stenhouse always creating wrecks
Ok season season but if the chase wasn't there it could have been great without the gimmick. I love Kurt Busch but Jeff Gordon Dale Jr and Jimmie Johnson won 19 of the 36 races. And if you saw that entire season like I did growing up you know that was Mickey asf which is why Kurt never came remotely close to winning it again.
They decide to do numerous battery changes instead of an alternator change? What? This makes no sense.
