Barney fought Vortigaunts, fought HECU, saving Dr. Kleiner, Eli, and Alyx from Black Mesa, fought Combine Benefactors and evading them on the 7 hour war to keep Eli, Kleiner, Alyx, Magnusson, and the others alive, never giving up in a post apocalyptic world, and building the resistance. If he wasn't there then Kleiner, Eli, Alyx, and the rest would be dead long ago. So he did help but Adrian Shephard solos Barney.

Durability to barney decause he survived in Black mesa and 7 hour war
Barney is all and all a better character, he survived black mess without the g-man, didn’t have a PCV or HEV’s and he survived a literal war, than survived the events of HL2, plus experience goes to Barney as he was there at the start of the incident, Adrian came many hours later.
Adrian is still in the void.

I like to think Adrian was a failsafe if Gordon went rogue but now the Gman put all his interests and investments in Alyx. Still he ALONE shutted down the Race X invasion while Freeman was dealing with the Nihilanth and thats the reason the Gman was so interested in him to the point of saving him from Black Mesa and to "preserve" him. Let's not forget that the Gman also saved Adrian from a room that was being flooded by acid so he had his attention pretty early to help him survive.

One came out of Black Mesa with the help of his fellow companions, survived the 7HW and later on the 2 decade occupation that got broken with the Uprising that raged for more than 8 days, and he was there all along. All of this with only regular body armor.

Adrian didn't have plot armour, he was a threat to Gmans plans to the point where he had to be contained in stasis. Barney was so insignificant Gmad didn't care.

He's been a primary leader of the Lambda Resistance for almost 20 years until Gordon came back, so give him credit for keeping Eli, Alyx, and Kleiner alive after the Black Mesa incident, the 7 hour war, and humanity's slavery to the Combine for 20 years. He's the reason why Gordon had so much help when he arrived. He's the reason why Half Life 2 exists.

I would say Gina Cross and Colette Green survived without Gmans help but they probably got annihilated in the nuclear explosion before they escaped the facility
Gordon didnt have Gman's help when he fought through black mesa. When a being like gman has interests in an individual, they dont assist them and prevent them from dying. They sit and watch to see if the individual they sre interested in has the qualities to be hired. That is what happened to Alyx and Gordon.
Also gman had to interfere with adrian multiple times because adrian was also negatively affecting the gman's plans. Gman rearmed the bomb that adrian had disarmed moments before, closed and blocked off adrian's escape, and had tonput adrian in stasis as he would have presumably managed to kill gordon.
Gordon Freeman, Adrian Shephard and Barney Calhoun are three Half Life goats.

Adrian trained in a military camp + his time at black mesa. Barney survived black mesa + 20 of fighting the combine, he clearly has more experience, unless this is just based on feats in half life
Barney most likely hid during the 7 hour war, as he wanted to protect the scientists of black mesa. Also he still has the combat/fighting experience of a black mesa security guard.

On Half Life Blue Shift, I saw Barney kill Vortigaunts, zombies, and the HECU. He also fought Combine Benefactors for 7 hours and survived and evaded them. And he resisted the Combine's slavery and death for 20 years and he's the reason HL2 exists.

Both had what it took to survive Black Mesa, along with Freeman. In the end, it was all the same with all three surviving. I loved all the story of all three in this series. Total nostalgia! It would have been most epic if all three were on the same side and page in the situation. That’s why I never killed any of the surviving security guards and scientists, back when I played Opposing Force. It just wasn’t right to do that. They should have been ordered to just evacuate and protect all surviving Black Mesa personnel, both the HECU units and Black Ops forces, while only fighting the Xen creatures and later the Combine. ✊💯❤️😎

i believe its a tie, because Barney did make it out of Black Mesa with hardly any help, went to Xen to power the teleporter, Barely escaping Xen wildlife, and traversed the facility by himself
While Adrian stopped whole another alien race invasion, Barney is cool but nowhere near as powerful as Adrian, even G-man saw this and wanted to take Adrian with him because of his huge potential, Barney on the other hand didn't have such a potential hence why G-man didn't "offer" him a job.

While Combine is stronger than Race X, Barneys and Adrians roles are different, Barney is only an above average rebel who supports others, for example Gordon Freeman in their mission to defeat Combine.
Adrian went pretty much alone toe to toe against the whole alien race, it is just not the same thing.
What Adrian did, required much more than what Barney can give. G-Man saw the potential of Adrian way before the incident of Black Mesa, but didn't care about Barney at all, because he is not on the same level.

Without the scientists, Barney would not be able to escape Black Mesa, of course this goes both ways, the scientists also needed Barney to escape.
For Adrian, it was G-man who helped him to escape.
When it comes to defeating the alien race, Barney is just a support for the rebels (a damn good one, but still, just a support), Adrian was the head of the spear, others just opened the doors for him to push pack the Race X while Barney is the one who opens doors for Gordon Freeman to do the job.
