An awesome combo of well cooked spam, eggs, and rice. I love how you not only show how it's cooked but also explain the important info on the ingredients. The name Spiced Ham is the right one according to an article I read on the Guardian. It was the name suggested in a competition launched by the Geo. A. Hormel Company in 1937. An awesome info by you! Thank you so much, Chef Buck and CG!!
Spiced Ham was is certainly one of the kindest names I found for spam on the internet. I really liked the Turkey spam and I think going forward that's the one I'm going to purchase in the future--it tasted great and is a much healthier option compared to the other Spam offerings
@@ChefBuckRecipes Yes, you are right about the name! Now the spam is used for so many different kinds of meat that the name seems to have lost its relevance unless the container actually has ham. Thank you for sharing about the Turkey spam! I am sure that it must be more tender than others!
That was my breakfast last week sans the rice and nori. People love to mock Spam and vocalize how much they hate it, yet when the pandemic started, you couldn't find a can of it anywhere! I personally love it right out of the can, sliced on fresh bread with a tiny bit of mayo. It's just one of those things I eat that I can't explain why I love it. Thanks for doing an entire show on it. ❤️👍😋
that's very true...at the beginning of the pandemic spam and TP were premium items! And I'm kinda surprised how overwhelmingly positive the comments have been regarding spam...I expected a bit of anti-spam verbiage. Spam certainly isn't the ideal choice when it comes to fat and salt content, but I think the turkey spam is a tasty solution to that issue.
Yes. It seemed like all canned meats were running out, Even the different canned fish meats were hard to find. I think many people were stocking up in case everything is absolutely locked down. Even the so called essential workers. It took until last year to where people weren’t coming in to buy as much canned meats they can afford.
Personally I love Spam! Cooked nice and crispy like you did yours and my eggs over medium... And I also love breakfast anytime of day! Our local diner has breakfast available all day, YUMM!
I have zero desire to eat spam without the sear...I know it's already cooked, but the texture of spam right out of the can is not thrilling! That crispiness makes all the difference, I think
Thanks. Everytime I plan to start a diet you post something like this. Have found when cooking eggs sunny side up, using a SS dome cheese melter or a lid placed on the pan for a min makes for perfect eggs everytime.
What PERFECT timing CB! Just this week we were trying to explain to our Japanese friend who's currently living in the States what exactly SPAM is. Now I can just send her your video. :D
When I stayed with my great Aunt SImm, my fond memories are of SPAM & Juicy Fruit gum. I never thought of it as poor people food because my great aunt & uncle owned a very successful company. 🤷🏼♀️
My mom always had spam in the cabinet, although I don't have memories of her making it that often when I was a kid...she always had those little round tins of deviled ham, too. Back in the day, Juicy fruit gum was a real treat! Have you had it lately? I haven't had a stick of that gum in about 20 years probably.
Yummy, yummy! Camera Girl looked really happy with her breakfast! Walmart's canned Great Value "luncheon meat" stands in well for Spam, at a better price, and they also have a reduced sodium version. I've been having the same thing for lunch every day: a 2-oz serving of lower-sodium lunch meat, diced and browned in the skillet on medium heat, scramble in the eggs (2 or 3), then sprinkle with 2 oz diced cheese. I flip it to finish melting the cheese, then serve. Using 3 eggs it provides a 40-gram wallop of protein. It works for supper, too, with a side salad. I used to buy the HEB store brand (Texas grocery chain), but they raised the price well above Walmart's, and I actually like the GV better anyway. Apparently I'm not the only person who's discovered that canned meat can be an economical source of protein when others get priced beyond my reach.
Canned meats are definitely a great value. I've never seen an HEB, but I've heard of them. I just read about a spam variety that already has cheese in the can...for some reason that just doesn't sound right :^)
Had spam growing up, we were poor.😊Try fried spam, eggs and refried pinto beans or black beans with salsa and corn or flour tortillas. Might be having this for breakfast!🥰🙋🏻♀️💜tfs
I don't remember ever having actual SPAM growing up but certainly we had canned ham -- the large triangular canned stuff and I even remember some canned corned beef. I can believe the #2 country to love spam is South Korea. It probably has to do with the extreme poverty and lack of meat and other foodstuff during and after the Korean War during which American soldiers probably introduced it to the local hungry population. If you're starving, you find ways to make even highly processed meat in a can seem like a king's feast.. And probably the same thing with the Phillipines where SPAM I'm told by my Fillipino care aid is highly coveted (they are available in the Phillipines but quite expensive) and Fillipinos visiting the Motherland make it a point to stock up on SPAM cans to bring as gifts to relatives. Anyway, great video on SPAM. It actually looks very tasty after a stint in the frying pan.
Canned ham! I forgot about that stuff. I remember my mama having canned ham in the kitchen when I was a kid, and I remember stocking canned ham on the grocery shelf (it was an awkward can), but I don't remember ever eating it, although I must have somewhere along the line.
About a decade ago, I did lots of spam videos. The spam people liked what I was doing and sent me a case of spam with all the different flavors. I tried them all and I have to say, regular old spam is still my favorite.
did you try the turkey spam? I think my heart is the most excited about that one! maybe I should tweet this video to Hormel and see if I can rustle up a case of Spam in the mail!
Another winner, Buck. Was just talking about SPAM yesterday with family member. Like the idea of serving with rice. And always with eggs. Usually I cook the Spam lite. Don’t seem to taste a difference. Maybe I’d serve with a bit of pineapple. Don’t really like the dried seaweed…too salty. Barbara in Al.
I found the turkey spam to be very tasty, and it's a whole lot lighter than the Spam lite, so I think I'll be sticking with turkey spam in the future. Your mentioning pineapple makes me think of one of my favorite pizza toppings which is pineapple, wasabi, and peppers...I bet seared and cubed spam would fit nicely on there, too
Nice !!!! I tried frying up cubes of the low sodium spam and putting them in a salad (kinda like bacon bits)......not bad at all !!!!!! Another great vid from CB and CG !!!!

I was really surprised and heartened to read that spam was still canned in the USA. Hawaii is the No.1 consumer of SPAM--is McDonalds edging them over the line? I wonder what the No.2 state is? (I can't find a consistent answer to that question on the internet)
OK you got me hooked on corned beef. I've made your corned beef and cabbage and corned beef hash several times so now I guess its time to move onto spam. Grocery shopping tomorrow and I do remember seeing turkey spam on the shelf. Might give it a try
I'm about due for some corned beef and cabbage myself...I don't think I'll be having corned beef hash anytime soon since I've got a few cans of Spam to get through :^)
I'm late watching your video today but glad I took a break to watch. Great information. I grew up with my dad cooking every Sunday night and if he did a breakfast dinner he would sometimes cook spam and eggs, sunny side up with crispy edges but mom always had to have her yolk broke and cooked like Momma Buck. Thanks again for the video. Have a great weekend.
I'll break a yolk and cook an over-hard egg for myself if I'm making an egg sandwich, but otherwise I'm over easy all the way!--I like a sunny side up egg, but it takes longer to cook (like I'm so busy!)
Man I’m watching this at the end of my work day and I want to go home and have it for dinner. My favorite kind of spam is jalapeño spam. It’s not too spicy, it’s perfect!!
Jalapeno spam? I think I'd like that variety, but I have never run across it. I haven't seen the Teriyaki version, either, but I'd give that one a go, too. All of the Spam varieties actually look worth giving a try, except one variety I read about: Spam with Cheese. Something about cheese in a can makes me ...not hungry.
we used to eat this spam breakfast out all the time when we lived in Seattle 'cause it was yummy and cheap for the area we were living in (although looking online I see that both restaurants we ordered this dish at in Seattle are gone now...both places were operated by Filipinos. I've read that this spam breakfast is staple in the Philippines.

@@ChefBuckRecipes I saw the other videos page and watched the corn beef hash recipe. Spinach is my favorite food and corned beef hash and eggs my second. I chucked a bit when you said, "Worste-sher-shta-shire" sauce. When me and my brother Scott would go to the drive in movies with our parents, often times we would build a "fort" with our blankets in the back seat of our old Oldsmobile and for fun we for some strange reason would every so often open the curtain of blankets and ask our parents who were intensely watching some film with Clint Eastwood or Charles Bronson if they had any "Worste-sher-shta-shire" sauce and laugh! It was so dumb but so cute now as I reflect back on it. Thanks for what you do. I'm just now at nearly age 60 taking the time to learn cooking...as a hobby. I used to study philosophy, religion, law etc as hobbies but with declining vision it's not so easy to do anymore. I had planned to write a book in religious studies but I no longer have any association with a university to do the kind of intellectual work I wanted and also there is also the problem that nobody really reads books anymore. It's all this online stuff. Then, I though about publishing a cookbook of recipes from Nepal with my friend Lena and starting up a small restaurant, but she wouldn't commit or take the idea seriously. I'm not much a business minded person anyway so I guess it all worked out for the best. I hope to learn French cooking someday and cooking with Fish. Anyway, cooking is fun and therapeutic. I'll continue to explore your recipes here as they look very appetizing. Thank you Chef Buck. Have a nice day. Staci🐬
Cooking is definitely fun and therapeutic! You probably dodged a bullet not opening a restaurant!--I've probably worked in 20 restaurants or more over the course of my days, but I don't think I'd ever open one myself...I've worked for some super folks, but I'd never want to be in their shoes (it always looked like they were treading water to me!). When I was a kid I could never say Worcestershire correctly, and I doubt I can now, so I don't even try :^). The first movie I remember ever seeing was a drive-in movie -- True Grit with John Wayne...I remember being terrified when Kim Darby fell into the rattlesnake pit!
Chef, what about Treet? I like Treet better than Spam but I like Spam too. Today was the first time I have seen so many variations of Spam. They sound good! I love over easy eggs on rice for breakfast. That looked so good. We’re out of Treet, so I need to buy more. I usually order a case from Amazon. Hi camera girl! God bless you guys! Jean from Arizona 🦎🦂⛰🌞🌻🌴🐍🌵
I forgot about Treet! I think I used to stock that on the shelf when I worked at a grocery store, but I've never eaten it that I can remember. Is it the same as Spam?
If anyone digs long enough, they'll find a can of Spam in a kitchen cabinet. All new housing construction since 1955 included a can of Spam. The Spam lobby in the 1950's was quite influential.
This looks delicious Buck! Got a can of Turkey SPAM in the cabinet and will try it with cauliflower rice. Do you have any creative ideals for over easy eggs with vegetables, or in a salad?
That's hilarious that you say that!--I just finished off the Turkey spam with grits!...my mother-in-law was not interested in rice again for breakfast, although I think the rice and nori combo worked better than nori and grits
Someone said to never eat something your grandmother wouldn't recognize as food. I sadly considered that my grandmother, born in 1895, would definitely NOT recognize sushi as food. Oh, well. Sushi wins. Had it for lunch today! 😉 @@47retta
Man, I haven’t had SPAM in years…but I’m going out today to buy some of the turkey variety. Looks like it could be a fairly healthy breakfast meat, but I’ll just leave out the white rice…or maybe substitute brown…or maybe even wild rice. The mind boggles!!!
the nutritional difference between the regular spam and turkey spam is pretty drastic...and I really liked the turkey spam, so I don't think I can justify eating the regular spam now
I generally have the same problem with cast iron skillets, although they get better and better the more seasoned the skillet becomes. I try not to use too much detergent when cleaning my skillet (and no detergent at all if I can help it). I'll often set my skillet on a burner for just a moment after I wash it, just to dry it out, and then I'll apply a thin coating of oil with a paper towel. I try to remember not to cook tomatoes in my cast iron skillet, although I eventually forget and end up dumping a can of tomatoes in my skillet at some point...that always seems to foil any seasoning I've accrued, and then I have to start over from scratch. I'd say the main thing that makes my skillet easier to use is just keeping it oiled between uses.
Our favorite is hot and spicy. It's awesome. My guess for #2 is Korea. It's extremely popular there. It's where we got into it. Never ate it in the states. Did I miss what the #2 country is?
I didn't put the answer in the video, but you're right...South Korea is the number 2 consumer of spam behind the United States! I wouldn't have guessed that...I'd have guessed Philippines and been wrong
I cooked SPAM in the toaster oven on a sheet of aluminum foil on a tray (not covered). It crisps up ok, but you have to watch it... if you leave it in too long, it'll dry up. It's still edible, but it can get too dry.
Sitting on one-hundred cans of spam, and a thousand boxes of ammo for more than likely SHTF [Mad Max] scenario. My kosher neighbor stocked piled Corned Beef with two-thousand boxes of ammo.
@@ChefBuckRecipes For sure, preppers [artisans of preparedness] take many shapes and forms, stockpiling vitamin packed dehydrated fruits and vegetables. .
One big problem I see after reading the nutritional info on the can. There are six servings in the can. I can easily eat half of a can if I wanted to. I would end up with more than my supply of salt for the day.
@@ChefBuckRecipes aha, I went back and checked and yes it is corned beef (makes sense really). Weird thing is I bought it thinking it was spam and intending to buy spam. Senior moment I suppose.😂
With the old SPAM cans that used a key to open the can, the rolled metal ‘sprang’ like a spring, cut my finger so bad I had to go get stitches, ugh, not a fond memory
maybe that's a sign (although I'm probably too cheap to return to Seattle...in fact I looked online and the two places where we ordered this inexpensive SPAM breakfast are close now. Old and funky is quickly being replaced by shiny and new...and waaaay more expensive)
@Chef Buck yeah, out with the old is not Necessarily a good thing!! I'm pass due a trip to the pike place market lol Fyi: every style of egg you cooked looked awesome...I was ready to run to the frig. And grab a few, but with eggs at almost 3.00 per I'll hold out another day or 2🤣🤣🤣🤣
I'm surprised that at my local store that they stock 5 varieties...that seems like a lot of shelf space to me, and I don't recall them having that many options when I've bought spam in the past...I think the Spam marketing and sales department must be working overtime
I'd say her favorite eggs are scrambled, followed by over easy or medium depending on what the eggs are being served with...I was surprised she wanted the sunny up eggs...I think that was just because it reminded her of the place we used to eat at when we lived in Seattle
You lost me at Spam. My preferred egg style, over easy, sometimes breaks when I turn it over. I think because I don't like to use a lot of butter or olive oil in the pan because of calories.
I remember spam in the cabinets when I was a kid, but I don't remember my mother cooking it often ...and don't think my dad loved it, so it was probably a back-up ingredient for my mom
I've ALWAYS cooked bacon in the oven or on the stove top, but CG has finally conned me over onto the microwave team (although in the past we haven't had a microwave in our own space...but it's been a long time since we had our own space)
I mean.. pork belly cured with salt, and smoke..bacon is better for you if you buy real bacon.. especially dry cured, cold cooked, the old fashioned way without nitrates. If you have flesh that would smell like a carcass if it sat out for 8 hours.. but instead was canned and left shelf stable for years? I mean… I eat spam. But comparing salt and fat numbers on spam vs bacon is hilarious 🤣
Spam and bacon are pretty interchangeable at my breakfast table, but as unhealthy as bacon is perceived, I think it edges out spam as the healthier option; that being said, I think I'll just be buying turkey spam in the future, cause I thought it was delicious.

I have no idea what I did to put that line through there :^(
Hi. Greetings from México. You are so right. Liver is so good but SO under rated.
Great minds think alike.... I had spam fried rice for dinner!
sounds wonderful! thanks for watching!
Looks delicious!
thanks for watching!
Made me hungry for spam now, haven’t had it for 10 years
SPAM is a boomerang food
@@ChefBuckRecipes yes, it’s canned the same and looks the same( almost) except to me it has a better taste. Jean from Arizona
You talked me into it! I have a can of light spam in the pantry 😂 tfs!!! ❤
If anyone digs long enough, they'll find a can of Spam in a kitchen cabinet. All new housing construction since 1955 included a can of Spam. The Spam lobby in the 1950's was quite influential.
I add SPAM to Miso soup by reducing the silken tofu by half. (careful w the soy & salt)
SPAM in miso sounds perfect
This looks delicious Buck! Got a can of Turkey SPAM in the cabinet and will try it with cauliflower rice.
Do you have any creative ideals for over easy eggs with vegetables, or in a salad?
He did one a while ago called
Olive oil fried eggs with garlic
In which he served over a salad. I tried it and the egg was great on the salad.
glad you liked it...I think a runny yolk is almost a perfect sauce/dressing ruclips.net/video/guu1AbpiOCU/видео.html
I would have to have grits instead of rice, to go with runny eggs. I love Spam.
That's hilarious that you say that!--I just finished off the Turkey spam with grits!...my mother-in-law was not interested in rice again for breakfast, although I think the rice and nori combo worked better than nori and grits
@@ChefBuckRecipes I've never had nori. Not sushi either, GASP!!! I'm just a small town southern gal who likes southern cooking! But I do looove rice!
Someone said to never eat something your grandmother wouldn't recognize as food. I sadly considered that my grandmother, born in 1895, would definitely NOT recognize sushi as food. Oh, well. Sushi wins. Had it for lunch today! 😉 @@47retta
Tasty.
thanks for watching!
I must try this delicious
Yes I would have green eggs spam
even in a box? or with a fox?
Man, I haven’t had SPAM in years…but I’m going out today to buy some of the turkey variety. Looks like it could be a fairly healthy breakfast meat, but I’ll just leave out the white rice…or maybe substitute brown…or maybe even wild rice. The mind boggles!!!
the nutritional difference between the regular spam and turkey spam is pretty drastic...and I really liked the turkey spam, so I don't think I can justify eating the regular spam now
I'm impressed your doing eggs in your iron skillet. Love my iron skillets but my eggs do tend to stick! Help got any ideas?
@@ChefBuckRecipes ok thanks I do all that guess I'll start over! Didn't know about the tomatoes. Ty
@@ChefBuckRecipes Koreans love it so much that they have special gift packs for holiday giving.
Yum!!
I'm actually shocked at all the pro-SPAM comments!
@@ChefBuckRecipes me too! It's like scrapple & liver mush ... either it's a hard smash or a pass! I definitely need to try the Hawaiian musubi!
Hickory Smoke Spam is my favorite 😋
I don't believe I've seen that variety...what part of the world do you live in?
@@ChefBuckRecipes I’m surprised you didn’t see it in Seattle. I live west of Seattle in Kitsap County. It’s sold at Safeway here.
My favorite too!
Wjat is the green stuff, looks good
I cooked SPAM in the toaster oven on a sheet of aluminum foil on a tray (not covered). It crisps up ok, but you have to watch it... if you leave it in too long, it'll dry up. It's still edible, but it can get too dry.
Sitting on one-hundred cans of spam, and a thousand boxes of ammo for more than likely SHTF [Mad Max] scenario.
My kosher neighbor stocked piled Corned Beef with two-thousand boxes of ammo.
are there vegan preppers?
@@ChefBuckRecipes
For sure, preppers [artisans of preparedness] take many shapes and forms, stockpiling vitamin packed dehydrated fruits and vegetables.
.
I'm watching late tonight. Is Vietnam the no. 2 consumer of spam? This was a college staple for me and it traded well in the dorms!
No.2 is South Korea! but great guess...Spam and Ramen must be college brain foods
@@ChefBuckRecipes For sure!
Oh you missed out.... the bacon one is awesome
My mother's favorite spam in the bacon version, but I think the Turkey version is my favorite, now
One big problem I see after reading the nutritional info on the can. There are six servings in the can. I can easily eat half of a can if I wanted to. I would end up with more than my supply of salt for the day.
I live in the UK and I've got a can of Spam in my cupboard but it is mostly beef. I wonder why it is different to US Spam?
is it corned beef? I read there are 14 varieties of spam, but all of the ones I've encountered have been pork, chicken, or turkey meats
@@ChefBuckRecipes aha, I went back and checked and yes it is corned beef (makes sense really). Weird thing is I bought it thinking it was spam and intending to buy spam. Senior moment I suppose.😂
Jalapeño Spam is best. I use it in Kimchi Fried Rice.
오~ 한국식으로 제대로 즐기시네요^^
With the old SPAM cans that used a key to open the can, the rolled metal ‘sprang’ like a spring, cut my finger so bad I had to go get stitches, ugh, not a fond memory
ouch!--the corned beef cans are still like that...I definitely exercise caution opening them up
Spamera Girl!
ba-dump!
Only canned item i would scarf down is sardines, not that canned pork.
I'd say between the two, sardines is the one your body wants you to pick
Did anyone count how many times Seattle was mentioned 🤔
maybe that's a sign (although I'm probably too cheap to return to Seattle...in fact I looked online and the two places where we ordered this inexpensive SPAM breakfast are close now. Old and funky is quickly being replaced by shiny and new...and waaaay more expensive)
@Chef Buck yeah, out with the old is not Necessarily a good thing!! I'm pass due a trip to the pike place market lol
Fyi: every style of egg you cooked looked awesome...I was ready to run to the frig. And grab a few, but with eggs at almost 3.00 per I'll hold out another day or 2🤣🤣🤣🤣
2_2_23 hope you and camera girl are well. We miss your videos..
We only have regular Spam in the UK, shame
I'm surprised that at my local store that they stock 5 varieties...that seems like a lot of shelf space to me, and I don't recall them having that many options when I've bought spam in the past...I think the Spam marketing and sales department must be working overtime
Well, there's egg and bacon,
Egg sausage and bacon
Egg and spam
Egg, bacon and spam
Egg, bacon, sausage and spam
Spam, bacon, sausage and spam
Spam, egg, spam, spam, bacon and spam
Spam, sausage, spam, spam, spam, bacon, spam tomato and spam
Spam, spam, spam, egg and spam
Spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, baked beans, spam, spam, spam and spam.
spam looks like the dominant strain in this scenario
Bloody Vikings!
Lazier=smarter..... sometimes
that's true (although the lazy part of me might argue the point)
Bacon SPAM is the best SPAM.
I think #2 might be South Korea.
Ding! You got it!
Camera girl!!!! I thought you like your eggs like me over well but not broken.
I think because I don't like to use a lot of butter or olive oil in the pan because of calories.
over easy is my preferred style as well...I was shocked that CG wanted sunny side up.
I could watch you cook 👩🍳 eggs all day. But no spam for me. I ate it at least every other day when I was a child. Yuck 🤢
I remember spam in the cabinets when I was a kid, but I don't remember my mother cooking it often ...and don't think my dad loved it, so it was probably a back-up ingredient for my mom
So you’ve escaped Seattle?
SPAM = spiced ham,,, back when there were 2 ingrediants,, ham and spice
i think,,,,,
I grew up as Spam being poor man's meat
Bacon is better in the oven.
Too much left coast
