      @MaxCroat 10 месяцев назад +34

It was certainly a beast, in its own separate category from anything else. But it also had significant problems. It was too heavy and the engine was severely underpowered. Really, the Panther was more than adequate and more than a match for any Allied tank, and it would have been a lot more efficient to focus production on those. But it couldn't have helped the Germans much anyways, they just didn't have the manpower, industry and resources to win the war. The only way for them to win would be if they managed to defeat the Soviets quickly like they did with western Europe.

@@roberts1711 You have to understand against who they fought, they were so desperately scared to be caught alive by soviets that they fought to the last bullet and last man. Germans always fought their way back to their own units for safety or allied units to surrender. They knew that death was better choice than being captured. Indeed own death is not worst fate. You can compare volksturm on western front and eastern front. On western front germans didnt really fight. On eastern front kids and grandfathers fought to cover retreat of civilians. I read book about Festung Elbing and descriptions were rly colorful and this wasnt even the bloodiest of sieges.
I think that even now during current war ukrainians are aware that surrendering to russians is last option. Captives from Mariupol gave colorful descriptions of russian "hospitality"

The LAST Tiger to fight in Berlin was NOT a Tiger II.. The real LAST Tiger, to fight, in Berlin, was an early Tiger I #323 of the Müncheberg Division. Tiger 323 was abandoned by its crew near the Brandenburg Gate, on May 2nd, 1945. Tiger 323 was also NOT knocked out by the Russians, but they did take photos standing around, and on it, during the days following its abandonment.

Closest thing to such a dramatic tale I know of, is the 1989 film "The Beast"(alternately called The beast of war). This film takes place in Afghanistan c. 1982 when a Russian formation of tanks attacks a village, then gets lost and separated from the unit, and tries to make it back to the Russian base at Kandahar on its own. But a group of Afghan muji decides to follow this tank and its crew to destroy them, which they can do because the tank has a shot out radio and is getting more damaged with every encounter with the Afghans.
Best tank film ever, a lot better than "Fury" for that matter.

If they would have won with some grace and humility this destruction of people and continent wouldn't have been a history lesson of death and misery. The leaders knew what they were doing with the Treaty after the war.

Wilson promised to not get America involved, then once he was reelected, he lifted the ban on banks loaning to the British and French. He gave banker JP Morgan a govt guarantee for a loan to Great Britain and France. When Russia fell, Germany was able to shift forces to the west and defeat her enemies, but the US troops were sent to guarantee that loan. Arguably, without the US helping to win the war, there would have been no AH and notsee takeover.

It is very much true, the Diktat was horribly unfair. And it was a Diktat, a Treaty is negotiated by both sides. The Central Powers and Russia were not invited to the discussions. It was a spiteful, dictated reordering of Europe. Just look at what the "Allies" did to Russia, stealing her (and German) territory to create Poland. Nicholas II was a fool to trust them but Britain were manipulating everybody
Germany, despite losing the war had achieved her strategic goals by 1918, by eliminating Russia. This ensured that there was no longer a military threat to her. A peace could easily have been negotiated in 1918. But Britain and France didn't want that, they wanted "unconditional surrender", which to the Germans meant occupation. France wanted revenge for 1870 and Britain wanted the German navy eliminated (every country in Europe who built a sizeable navy since the 1600's was attacked by Britain). Then they blamed Germany for everything with the "Guilt Clause" even though the war started in Serbia with no Germans involved
As for Germany following a madman, I think most German politicians of that era would fit into that category. But I see very little difference between Hitler and Churchill, both were warmongering nutcases at the ends of long lines of warmongering nutcases. Both countries were full of them. Britain didn't gain a world-wide empire by being nice to people, but they are very good at covering their own history while pointing the finger at the "madman" over there. But they are not alone there...

The Red Army originally sent their tanks into Berlin but many were destroyed by Hitler’s fanatics who fired Panzerfausts and Panzerschrecks from hidden positions in the first floors of apartment buildings.
So, the Red Army withdrew their tanks and wheeled in 155 mm Artillery which fired their shells into the first floors of those building collapsing them and burying the German soldiers. Efficient and no Soviet tank crews were in danger of being killed, although the Soviets suffered 80,000 casualties in capturing Berlin.

Guderian had instructed Tiger crews to avoid confrontation with IS-2s unless they had an at least 2:1 superiority.

Georg Diers is truly a Man of History in every Meaning of the Word.
In his Book "Tiger in Berlin - Ein Soldat der Waffen SS berichtet" he describs his Role in the Great Mistery about the Fate of Adolf Hitler.
When he was on his way to the Reichskanzlei where he should be honored for his latest Tank Kills he noticed 2 Men try to burn a rolled Carpet with Gas in the Garden of the Reichskanzlei. Because of the incoming Fire from russian Artillery and the following Shockwaves not an easy Task. He than asked he Men what they do and they tell him in the Carpet is the Body of Adolf Hitler and their Order is to burn the Remains to Ash so the Soviets can´t get their Hands on.
Diers quickly realised that the Time runs out, and he rans back to his Tank to get 2 Tellerminen to blow the dead Body of the Reichskanzler und Führer Adolf Hitler to pieces. What he did, according his Words in the Book.
He says, when they moved the Body he noticed an Dark Spot on the Side of the already particily burned Head what looked like a Gunshot Wound. Nearby was a female Body, but it was impossible to blow it up as well because of increasing incoming Fire.
Despite it, no one knows about Georg Diers and what he did.
It really blew my Mind when i read this Book the first Time.
