(Many people are having one doubt so I am going to clear it)// In the last problem there is no shear stress applied externally but still we got the value of maximum shear stress from the mohr circle because the shear stress is going to be developed inside the material. For example// when you do the simple tensile test in UTM then also the material, if it's ductile fails under shear. In this case you are actually applying tensile load only but the material is failing under shear because shear stress is developed inside the material and the plane of maximum shear is making an angle of 45 degree with the principal plane. I told several times that when no shear will be applied principal plane angle will be 0 degrees. That means outer surfaces itself are principal planes.

Crystal clear explanation! In crystallography XRay diffraction to figure out the structure of proteins, myriad of planes cut through in order to intersect with possible atoms and then draw the extremely complex structure of proteins. So apparently there also myriad of elements with stress and strain in different directions. It is mind-bending how you managed to pinpoint what happens with principal planes of normal stresses and planes of maximum shear stresses or zero shear stresses.

A prismatic concrete column of mass density ρ supports its own weight, as shown in the figure. (Assume that the solid is subjected to a uniform gravitational body force of magnitude g per unit mass). Suppose that the concrete contains a large number of randomly oriented microcracks. A crack which lies at an angle θ to the horizontal will propagate if
    |Tt|+μTn>τ0
where μ is the friction coefficient between the faces of the crack and τ0 is a critical shear stress that is related to the size of the microcracks and the fracture toughness of the concrete, and is therefore a material property.
By assuming that μ=0.7, using Mohr's circle, find the orientation of the microcrack that is most likely to propagate. Hence, find an expression for the maximum possible height of the column.

For example: If any joint structure how we can justify the shear stress is critical at particular point. As you said with an element seems to solved but in real world we come across with many different critical structure and with different loading conditions.. if u share an video with explanation how we should analyse situation and being mechanical engineer what aspects we need to consider for analysis.
