Title: BEAUTIFUL restoration of a very cracked SHELF
#howto #howtorestore
Those puppys are called cleats in English. Lovely restoration.
I sent the video from my iPad to the TV screen. My spouse came in, sat on the couch while the video was playing, and said, “Watching this is meditative. I like that he doesn’t say anything.” :)
Haha :)
My mother was born in 1930. That piece has outlived her. Now, thanks to you, it might even out live me. Great job.
I deeply admire the respect you show for the pieces that you restore! You replace only what’s necessary, and send them back out into the world for another 100 years of useful life!!❤️
You said that perfectly. He’s definitely a Master at what he does. ♥️😊👍
Exactly! He is an artist!
I just wish I was rich, then I'd hire you to make a house full of beautiful pieces for my family and I. You Sir are an absolute craftsman, with an eye for perfection!! Bless you and your beautiful artistry!!!
If you are watching this and not subscribed, do it! This guy deserves at least 1 million subscribers. He is the best on you tube
That tenon replacement was genius.
Imagine the events that modest shelf has witnessed over the last 100 years.
That turned out really nicely! The splice and stain matching on the broken leg was brilliant!
I hope you are teaching young ones so they can carry on this important work. :) I'm your biggest fan.
Hello from Florida, USA. I just happened to watch a video one day and now I'm hooked! I know nothing about all of this. Everything you restore is amazing. I'm a nurse, and to me, you are a "surgeon" for furniture that is broken. I can't imagine how many years it took for you to learn how do do this. Each "patient" is unique. I'm in awe.
Well said 👍🏼
Thank you
Be sure to go back and watch all his videos. He is an absolute genius and everything. Take a look at some of the upholstery work is done. It’s just nuts
Hi Mark, I already have. Amazing!
Certainly not an industrial shelf but delicately elegant for an early 20th century living room.
These shelves it will certainly last longer than modern metal ones.
What a beauty. It was so lucky to meet with you. It is glorious again and hopefully it will be cherished and last for centuries.
Wow, color match Wizard, yet again! What a beautiful job. I loved your solution to allow the shelves to 'float' using the wood from the shelf. What a brilliant job.
Love seeing your work, it is just so inspiring! Thank you so much for posting!
Gorgeous work as always brother. My wife and I are your biggest fans, and are never disappointed in your videos! What you called "puppies", we, in Kansas U.S.A. call "cleats". A cleat is a fastening point here, also the name of where you tie mooring lines on a boat or ship. Thank you again Ahti, for the great video. God bless. Rev. D.
This is perfect example that sentimental value is priceless.
Your attention to detail is astonishing to me. You make the tedious look easy. Not very many people would have the skills or patience to do what you do to old furniture. Kudos to you big time. You would never know what sad shape that shelf unit was in to look at it now. 10 + out of 10 on this job. Whould be interesting to know how many hours you spent on this shelf.
I've always known those as cleats, Ahti. 20:50 The rack is elegent simplicity, and beautifully restored.
yes cleats
I think they are also called turnbuttons
I must remember that.
@@cricketfighter123 What we know as turnbuttons in Australia, are used in marine applications. It's a post that is fixed on a rail or deck that has a spring loaded button that is turned so that tarpolins can be fixed down.
@@jessegonzales9205 Yes, that is what they were called in high school woodworking class.
So much work... So much patience. Wow. Just stunning.
I think we might call your puppies, shelf pins..?
Beautiful piece! 💙
21:00 in Germany they are called Regallaschegedrückthaltenschnitzle.
My mouth literally fell open when I saw that word lol🐝🤗❤️
Lol ;)
I was surprised that the wood turned out to be so beautiful! Definitely a piece worthy saving. It’s always a pleasure to watch things being done the right way. 🌟
Loved the restoration of all 50+ bits...beautiful 😊 and the puppies, too...everyone loves puppies. 😂
If it's not called "puppy" in English, it should be! Beautiful work.
In any language this piece it beautiful!! My antique teacup collection would lovely on it!! You're work is wonderful!
Just got home from thrifting and what do my wondering eyes should appear? A video from the best furniture restorer everrrr 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🇺🇸👍🏼
VERY IMPRESSIVE AND BEAUTIFUL!!!💖💖💖💖💖
You are an absolut artist, your restorations are perfect!!!!!
И снова удовольствие от просмотра! Не устаю восхищаться вкусу, мастерству, терпению этого замечательного Мастера! Благодарю и желаю успехов и всего самого доброго. Привет из Питера!
Ahti, you are a wizard of great power. When you restore a piece of furniture. You make it like it was when it was new. Actually, I would call it a book shelf! I am in awe. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. God Bless you sir.
I think the 'kutsikad' are shelf pins, shelf spoons, or shelf supports in my country.
The amount of care, attention to detail, and efforts to preserve as much of the original material is absolutely wonderful. I love watching the results of your hard work and the effort you take to make sure the completed project is done correctly the first time.
They are called 'buttons' in English. They're used to allow expansion of table tops. See Paul Sellers videos.
We would call the "puppies" cleats. Beautiful job as always!
Your skill at matching wood stains on old and new wood never ceases to astonish me; the amount of learning to possess such knowledge and technique! Very well done!
What a tedious lot of detail, and yet you never take short cuts. Amazing.
Спасибо вам за видео,это учебный материал.
Желаю,чтобы вековые вещи,попадали
только к достойным Мастерам на реставрацию.
Beautiful work. As a US resident, thank you for sharing its history
Спасибо за видео. Отличная работа, реставрация что надо. Лайкаю мастеру за труд.
Once again, you have done an amazing job. This beautiful piece will now last for 100 more years
I love how you don't paint wood to cover up any flaws...you fix the flaws! Beautiful job.
This is amazing. If I hadn’t seen your work, I would swear you found an identical shelving unit somewhere. The finish is flawless, and the color is so rich and vibrant that it takes my breath away.
Unbelievable!!! From 50 pieces you restored a 1910 bookshelf to its original appearing condition! You are a master, sir!!!
Truly the best restoration youtube channel by miles 🙏
When you restore wood, I fall in love with wood and it’s beauty, like silk, velvet or gold really stunning work!❤
Stunning, you are keeping a lost art alive, thank you!
Have you ever thought of making replicas of antique furniture? Your skill is certainly on a level where you would achieve this. Maybe try selling some "new made old stuff". Good old craftsmanship and quality that will last decades.
During my apprentership (carpenter in Germany) we made copies from old furniture to improve our skills.
But there are two problems. Traditonal techniques are time consuming/ expensive. The second problem are the legal term, selling this furnitur would be considert as fake and punishd.
Maybe some day I will if there is client who is ready to pay for it.
@@jonawolf8023 If you market is as replicas, fully admitting that they are, it should be OK I think. You are not making a fake, you are recreating something of real value. Real Handwerk, as you might say. Traditional techniques are time consuming, I agree. But I think there will be a market for such products. Not the IKEA mass produced things (which I have at home and certainly do not claim they are inferior). If I ever earn that much money, I would pay a true artist - craftsman to do the job.
@@ATRestoration I hope you will one day. I hope people will one day not only earn enough money, but also appreciate the art that people like you put into your work. Whether it is restoration or building something new. Best wishes, Erik. 🙂
@@erikziak1249 to be more precise. The use of the techniques and even making and selling a replica is legal if i mark them and ensure that nobody can remove the mark...
The German Market for antique is very tricky becaus antiques are seen as oportunitie to do tax evasion o invest money. That means ther are lots of regulations an one hand, an the other hand we have a big market for fakes. Mixing old furniture an new ons means you will have lots of problems becaus of tax evasion or fraud.
Great restoration! Beautiful shelf unit.
Your videos are so relaxing to me I watch until I feel myself drifting to sleep but won't fall asleep until I see the reveal of your final product!😂
In your native tongue, the name of this sounds much more beautiful!
You did a beautiful job on this one!
My southern grandmother had one in her living room full of ceramic figurines.
There was such a piece of furniture in my grandmother's room. A white napkin with embroidered flowers in the form of a pattern was placed on each shelf (DIY)
They put on sticks : photographs, watches, books, newspapers, a casket
We called it "etażerka"
All I can say is “WOW”!!! Oh ya and “AMAZING”!!! and a whole bunch of good adjectives (lol).
Есть какое-то непреходящее очарование в старых вещах, даже в таких казалось бы простых. Спасибо, Ваша работа восхищает меня.
That tennon repair might be a standard technique, but for me as a non woodcraftsman it was pure genius.
I'll stash it, although I'll probably never use it.
You really, really made me smile when you did the before and after shots. Thank You.
Perfect renovation. You’re a true artisan.
The candlestick at the end... oh how beautiful!
Beautifully restored. It is called a whatnot.
I wrap mallets in a soft cloth if I'm separating wood or metal. It doesn't leave marks but still does the job
Ahti, basically, those things are table top fasteners. Amazon sells metal ones & offers this info:
"Table Top Fasteners provide a sturdy connection between the tabletop and apron, while still allowing the top to expand and contract with seasonal humidity changes. This prevents cracks from forming over time."
Your hand-made wooden ones are much more in keeping with the integrity of the design.
Being of quite light construction I suggest that those shelves are for light weight ornaments etc and not as a bookcase. May I suggest that you get a rubber mallet for separating joints in wooden furniture thereby avoiding bruising or damaging the wooden parts. I enjoy watching your furniture repairs/restoration videos very much. Thank you.
Hi, Ahti. In English, those fasteners are called "cleats". They are my favourite way of fastening a wooden table top. They're just so old school and functional. I love them!
Another masterful restoration!
I found you recently. I've not a lot of time to sit and watch videos, but when I do, I've been watching yours.
Thank you for sharing what you do. To watch a master at his craft is an absolute beautiful thing.
It's easy to see you love what you do. It's amazing and refreshing to see the beauty restored, instead of the gaudy paint that is used in the States.
Love your humor also!
Beautiful ! I know nothing about refinishing furniture but I really enjoy watching you do so from beginning to end. Watching you returning it to its former glory. Thank you for sharing this process.
Beautiful restoration. Easily another century of enjoyment (I agree with Ms. Ring)
This project was fantastic. Here in Kentucky,we call the puppies, buttons.
This probably looks better now than it did new!
Amazing job. And you can feel the love.
In English, we would call that a button fastener.
Wonderful job, as always!
I would call your "puppies", ; cleats. Used to fix a table top or solid chair seat to the frame without glue. It allows a little expansion and contraction due to change in moisture level, without the top cracking
I enjoy watching your way of accomplishing a task. The little twist on the tool to remove the stubborn shelf. Awesome. You do amazing work.
So elegant and beautiful with the natural wood, I know many people who would have thrown that out and bought a plastic or MDF replacement.
You simply make this look effortless. Hypnotising!
Your attention to the smallest detail always amazes me!! Beautiful!!
That is so beautiful! And so nicely done. You are amazing! Who would think a slender shelf would be so much work, and have so many pieces? My Mother would have called that a curio shelf.🐝🤗❤️
Regardless of what it's called, it can also now be called beautiful. And I call those little wood pieces support brackets
Beautiful craftsmanship.
remarkable restoration, with no quick glance and no damage so severe. But once you remove it in small pieces, there's a lot of damage. And you fixed it very carefully. It's a very nice video to watch.
The "puppys" we call buttons! Great work!
wow this is a great transformation! And the stain on the new leg is perfect - you can't even tell it is new! thanks for sharing
what a wonderful job. This piece looks so rich now. When you mentioned Estonia, I imidiatly had to think of the sunken Ferry.
Terrific restoration, you really have an eye for the details.
Great Job!!! "Puppy" in America is called a Cleat.
Every piece you restore us beautiful. You are meticulous in your work
That is absolutely fantastic. I would love it in my house. You are truly a magician with your restorations 👌
A beautiful job, perfect color matching and you brought new life into a very sad set of shelves that needed love. Wood of any type has a story and if it’s mishandled it can turn into a complicated mess.
Wonderful end result 😊
Looks like a diaper changing table to me. Excellent job!
True professional absolutely gorgeous 😊
Very delicate work;expertly done.
Truly a master at what you do. Never tired of watching your work.
What a flawless restoration. It's timeless.
Your work is exceptionalAZ, USA
Wonderful restoration of a piece that could have become kindling wood for the fireplace. Here in America, the "puppies" are called tabletop clips.
Traditionally, the wooden tabs you are using to hold the shelves are known as buttons.
Yes, I too was taught they were called buttons.
Thought they were cleats.
Like the shelf itself, there are many names for it! (I also had heard them referred to as cleats.)
Работа великолепная. Вы дарите старым вещам новую жизнь. Ваш инструмент и мастерская вызывают у меня зависть. Удачи во всех делах.
Great job as usual!!!👍
Such a beautiful job! That shelf unit will be a lovely and useful ornament to the home where it will be used.
You have truly revived this piece , wonderful work. Loved the video!
This piece is simply elegant, no matter what name we call it. I enjoy seeing your restoration professionalism and your use of all those wonderful power tools. Looking forward to your next restoration.
Beautiful work ! Just sayin, in french it's more like an "étagère" than an "desserte". A "desserte" would have some little wheels on the feets. The point of a "desserte" it's to help waiters (or domestics) to take dishes to the table for the launch, that's why there is some wheels !
I love watchin your restoration videos :D
