Dude. I had JUST gotten my October list set up yesterday (and, as I learned from my The House with Chicken Legs misfortune, checked Amazon, Book Depository, Waterstones, and Goldsboro for all the covers). Now, I'm re-evaluating EVERYTHING!!! **head in hands** Seriously, LOVE YOU and to the two people who cliked the thumbs down: did you even watch?! Go find something else to do with your time!
The cross between Addams Family and NBC for Amelia Fang is so on point! Always on the lookout for more spooky middlegrade! (Also, I honestly thought you had bought The Hungry Ghost with the sprayed edges already, such an amazing job!) *a bad typo nearly happened there omg 🤦🏼♀️😂*
The Hungry Ghosts sounds great to me! You always give the best middle grade recommendations and I learn about so many I hadn't heard of before. Merrybegot also looks fantastic to me and anything with slightly gothic vibes always gets to me :3
We had to read Stone Cold by Robert Swindells at school. A proper messed up book about an ex-army guy who went round killing homeless people to 'tidy up' his city.
Totally unrelated to the video but while watching I was hit with a huge wave of love I have for you and your content. Nothing specific triggered this but I just feel very warm and happy. Watching your content always feels like coming home. Sorry if this is weird haha
I need to check a lot of these out spooky MG books are my favorite! I love Amelia Fang! You should try Whispering Pines by Heidi Lang so creepy and good!
Oh I’m so excited! Middle grade is super new to me (as in TouchofWhimsy Alice in Wonderland readathon new) so I’m glad you made a Fall recommendation video!!
I can't wait till my kids are older so we can read things like these during the creepy season. In the meantime I guess I'll have to read them myself!! Awesome recs as ever Gav!! 😍
I read Room 13 at school twice maybe 7 and 10 years ago? There's one specific thing I remember (that might be a spoiler so I won't say), but it clearly must be a popular book to read in school. 😂
Have you ever read May Bird and the Ever After? It’s a middle-grade series about a girl and her cat who get trapped in the land of the dead. I read it when I was a kid and still love it as an adult!
Love these recommendations, I went ahead and bought the second Amelia Fang (I've already read the first) can't wait to carry on with the series 😂 thanks for sharing as always ❤️
Thank you for being you! I love your videos! Your the reason I got back into reading middle grade books. I always take your recs into consideration when I'm picking new books. 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🎃 Really looking forward to finally being able to participate in believathon!
I read the House On Hoarder Hill a few months ago and really enjoyed it!! I'm an absolute scaredy cat, always have been and it was right up my alley, just the right amount of mystery but not over the top scary 🤣👌
Thanks for making me want to buy even more books! Lol. I've never heard of Room 13 but I had to read a Robert Swindells book for school called Brother in the Land about some kids who survived a nuclear attack. I remember it being really sad. I really want to read The Beast and the Bethany.
Whelp my list just got a lot longer and I’m okay with it! 😆 I’m most excited to read Scritch Scratch (I think I heard about that from your channel?) because it takes place in Chicago where I live! If it’s as good as it sounds I’m hoping to get some copies for my office so the kids at my school can read a book that takes place in their city! Thanks for the amazing recs as always! ❤️
Room 13 is SO good. I think I was 18 when I first read it; I work with kids, and it's one of the books I study with them. I'd actually recommend the sequel (the story doesn't follow on, but the characters are the same) Inside the Worm, too, which I'd argue is better, and a very intense and compelling book. It kind of moves away from the mysterious/adventurous tone that made the first book so good, and becomes much darker and more horror-focused, if that makes sense! Robert Swindells generally is a really great writer. But I haven't read any of these others! I'll definitely seek them out. The Switching Hour sounds just perfect. If you haven't already read them, I'd highly recommend the Picklewitch and Jack books by Claire Barker (illustrated AMAZINGLY by Teemu Juhani). They're about a young boy called Jack who discovers that a witch lives in the tree in his back garden :D Thanks so much for this video, it's so great!
Phew I’m so glad Room 13 is still a good book haha. Interesting, I had no idea there was a sequel! Also thanks for the Picklewitch rec, I heard of it from Michelle Harrison too so with your rec also, I’ll add it to my list 😄
Have you ever read Spirit Hunters by Ellen Oh? LOVED IT!!! Middle grade, creepy house, paranormal, possession, exorcism, amnesia, plus good and evil spirits. Has Korean rep. Triggers for a moment of racism and talk of mental hospital. ❤️🎃👻💀
We had to read Room 13, too! And I also can't remember anything about it, but I remember it being very creepy. Did you ever read the Whitby Witches series? I remember LOVING the look of the covers when I was younger, and I used to go to Whitby all the time during the summer, but for some reason I never read them. I've got a copy of the first book to read now that I'm an adult, though...
I’ve read The Dark Deep and the sequel, The Beast. Both are so good and the final book in the trilogy should be out now, at least in the US but not sure for UK. The series gives us Stranger Things vibes to me; that’s usually part of my pitch to my students with the series.
I need all of these in my life right now! My daughter loves spooky books and movies, totally my child haha, and I want so many of these to read with her this season! Nothing is better than both of us enjoying the same books right !
I recommend a book called shadow weaver and the sequel Comet Rising and the author is MarcyKate Connolly it’s about a girl who has a shadow and she can talk to it and I think you will like it it’s filled with danger and magic I think you will enjoy it it’s also a middle grade
WAIT- I read Room 13 as a kid, Rom nummer 13 was the Norwegian title and I've literally never heard anyone talk about it before. I still have it and kinda wanna reread but also don't know if I'd want to read the translation or the original? Haha

I haven't heard of any of them so I need to check them out!
The dark deep is absolutely cracking, I have not long read that and it’s like Stephen King hits middle grade. I should have put my review up on Bookstagram. It’s bloody good Gav, I really enjoyed it and there are two other books in the series. Hopefully you enjoy it 🤗
I am soooooo getting The Beast and the Bethany, I was meant to have been sent it by a friend after they had the arc for it but I never received it so I will be getting it myself. Have a look for a book called Scavengers by Darren Simpson, that looks great, there is also Perfectly Preventable Deaths by Deirdre Sullivan, I would say this one is middle grade from reading it as it is definitely reads middle grade rather than YA. Cracking recommendations though Gav....I know you’ve probably read this already but there is also Small Spaces by Katherine Ardenand then also The Graceyard Book by Neil Gaiman
How to Train Your Gavin , definitely read The Darkdeep soon, I thought it was done very cleverly. I’m considering picking up the other books now, prior to this though I hadn’t heard of it x
The best thing about your reccomendations is there are usually a bunch I have never heard of and now need to have! Thanks Gavin!
Yay thanks I do try to mix some of my usually recommends with some brand new recommends too, just to keep it fresh 😄
I’m so into middle grade because of you. I kinda like it better then YA. Middle grade is fun and innocent

I will forever love this series. So good, I wished there had been more books.

Excellent!!
We had to read Stone Cold by Robert Swindells at school. A proper messed up book about an ex-army guy who went round killing homeless people to 'tidy up' his city.
We had to read that one, too! It was so sinister and I've never forgotten it.
the beast and the bethany cover with the bite mark tho
Totally unrelated to the video but while watching I was hit with a huge wave of love I have for you and your content. Nothing specific triggered this but I just feel very warm and happy. Watching your content always feels like coming home. Sorry if this is weird haha
I’ve been eying the Darkdeep and it’s sequel at my library for months now, I think Katherine Ardens Small Spaces is the ultimate spooky middle grade
Love this and you!!! Definitely have to check some these out!
Definitely think I love you more!
This is great because I was looking for more spooky middle grade to add to my collection!
