  • Audi is set to diversify its electric vehicle lineup with the introduction of the A6 Sportback E-Tron, expanding beyond its initial focus on crossovers. This new model, alongside its Avant sibling, rides on the same Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture that supports the Q6 E-Tron and the Porsche Macan. However, the Avant version will not be available in the United States.
The A6 Sportback E-Tron features a modern design, including split headlights with the main lights positioned below a separate strip of daytime running lights and turn signals. European versions will benefit from adaptive matrix Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) and customizable light signatures, but these features will not be available in the U.S. due to regulatory restrictions. Additionally, while the European models boast side cameras, the U.S. versions will stick to traditional mirrors.
One standout feature of the A6 Sportback E-Tron is its sleek profile, enhanced by flush door handles. The Sportback, technically a hatchback, offers a practical tailgate, distinguishing it from the Q6 E-Tron’s conventional door handles. Audi claims an impressive drag coefficient of 0.21 for the Sportback, making it the most aerodynamic Audi road car to date. However, this figure applies to models with specific European wheel designs and aero-optimized side cameras.
Inside, the A6 Sportback E-Tron features a familiar cabin design with an additional 10.9-inch touchscreen for the passenger, complementing the 14.5-inch central display and an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster for the driver.
In the United States, the A6 Sportback E-Tron will be offered in three versions: rear-wheel drive, Quattro, and the high-performance S6. The base model will deliver 362 horsepower, achieving 0 to 60 miles per hour in 5.2 seconds, with a top speed of 130 miles per hour. The Quattro model will increase output to 422 horsepower, reducing the 0 to 60 miles per hour time to 4.3 seconds. The flagship S6 Sportback E-Tron will offer 496 horsepower, with a temporary boost to 543 horsepower using launch control, completing the sprint in 3.7 seconds and reaching a top speed of 149 miles per hour.
All variants share a 94.4 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, supporting Direct Current charging at up to 270 kilowatts, enabling a 21-minute charge from 10 to 80 percent capacity. Audi estimates the European rear-wheel drive model will cover over 466 miles on a single charge, although the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency range will likely be lower.
Pricing for the U.S. market will be announced closer to the launch date. In Germany, the A6 E-Tron starts at €75,600 ($81,800) for the base Sportback, rising to €101,150 ($109,000) for the S6 E-Tron Avant. This new model marks a significant step in Audi’s transition towards electric vehicles, signaling the eventual end of the gas-powered A6, with future internal combustion engine models transitioning to the A7 moniker.
