Lovely lady and proudly British. I think she represents the large majority of the UK population. Sourcing food locally also helps.

I worked in engineering all my working life (now retired). Most of the companies I worked for exported most of what they manufactured. The last place I worked for 25 years and had a large manufacturing facility in the UK. In 2008, manufacturing was moved to India and over 100 people lost their job. I was surprised that we were still in the top 10 to be honest. Back in the early 80’s hundreds of UK manufacturing companies closed down.

I'm sorry to hear that David. Far too many people that worked in manufacturing have lost their jobs, and with that we've also lost many of the skills needed for manufacturing.

@@MakeitBritishLtd My company actually sent senior engineers over to India to train them. This then kept the jobs for a handful of staff based in UK. It is still in business that way.

Making this country more efficient is relatively easy. Firstly, our manufacturing base is crying out for a cheap sustainable energy sauce. Utilise our natural resources to the maximum, take full advantage of the energy resources we have beneath our feet and just off our shores. Invest in and build nuclear power stations not vanity projects like wind farms or solar panels which only work for a limited period of time, and only to make our politicians look good amongst all their green tree hugging environmentalist mates at the annual Davos party. Bye British manufactured products even if they are slightly more expensive in the first instance, The jobs created and the tax generated from those jobs will far outweigh any losses because it’s made in the UK. Then Stop all this Net Zero malarkey, the UK. trying to Achieve the impossible by 2050 is only going to cost this country billions if not trillions and will make people colder hungry at poorer. Notwithstanding the fact all that's it’s doing is exporting our jobs to China where they don't give a damn about the climate.

Not always a bad thing. Overrelying on making stuff is not currently doing the Chinese economy any favours, and it is not about the volume of production it is about making a profit. Turnover is vanity, profit is sanity. We still make plenty of stuff in the UK. I should know I have been running my own manufacturing company for over 45 years. I make more profit employing 2 people than most Chinese companies make employing hundreds. Assuming they still are in business. I need to as well judging by the size of my domestic bills. Back in the early 80s before the Chinese and far-east took over virtually all of the volume orders my company employed over 40 workers. Now I make more money for myself employing 2, indeed, infinitely more.
No doubt as we now have a Labour government not really running anything, the UK will be bouncing back up the table. Obviously giving junior doctors a 22% pay increase is going to help the UKs manufacturing base face the 3rd world competition head-on. As Labour ministers are so brilliant at picking winners, perhaps they would like to give me a large interest-free loan to help out with my cash flow problems? After all, I could do with a new top-of-the-range executive Merc and a much longer holiday in Mauritius and they don't come cheap. Perhaps I will meet my own NHS doctor there, that would be nice.
