Making this country more efficient is relatively easy. Firstly, our manufacturing base is crying out for a cheap sustainable energy sauce. Utilise our natural resources to the maximum, take full advantage of the energy resources we have beneath our feet and just off our shores. Invest in and build nuclear power stations not vanity projects like wind farms or solar panels which only work for a limited period of time, and only to make our politicians look good amongst all their green tree hugging environmentalist mates at the annual Davos party. Bye British manufactured products even if they are slightly more expensive in the first instance, The jobs created and the tax generated from those jobs will far outweigh any losses because it’s made in the UK. Then Stop all this Net Zero malarkey, the UK. trying to Achieve the impossible by 2050 is only going to cost this country billions if not trillions and will make people colder hungry at poorer. Notwithstanding the fact all that's it’s doing is exporting our jobs to China where they don't give a damn about the climate.

Ever since Blair we have had the relentless swelling of the Un productive classes in Britain with Parliament and the EU , as the ultimate goal in Gravy Train achievement closely followed by a grotesquely over bloated and non pr5oductive Civil Service. E ven the police are full of Pension planners working their tickets. No wonder Britain is sinking fast whilst the rest of the world copies what Britain used to be, an industrial power House thatr could fight5 for freedom. Now it persecutes its productive classes with an ever increasing police StATE. AND THE USE OF IMPOVERISHMENT, AS A WEAPON, AGAINST THEM.

I worked in engineering all my working life (now retired). Most of the companies I worked for exported most of what they manufactured. The last place I worked for 25 years and had a large manufacturing facility in the UK. In 2008, manufacturing was moved to India and over 100 people lost their job. I was surprised that we were still in the top 10 to be honest. Back in the early 80’s hundreds of UK manufacturing companies closed down.

Not always a bad thing. Overrelying on making stuff is not currently doing the Chinese economy any favours, and it is not about the volume of production it is about making a profit. Turnover is vanity, profit is sanity. We still make plenty of stuff in the UK. I should know I have been running my own manufacturing company for over 45 years. I make more profit employing 2 people than most Chinese companies make employing hundreds. Assuming they still are in business. I need to as well judging by the size of my domestic bills. Back in the early 80s before the Chinese and far-east took over virtually all of the volume orders my company employed over 40 workers. Now I make more money for myself employing 2, indeed, infinitely more. No doubt as we now have a Labour government not really running anything, the UK will be bouncing back up the table. Obviously giving junior doctors a 22% pay increase is going to help the UKs manufacturing base face the 3rd world competition head-on. As Labour ministers are so brilliant at picking winners, perhaps they would like to give me a large interest-free loan to help out with my cash flow problems? After all, I could do with a new top-of-the-range executive Merc and a much longer holiday in Mauritius and they don't come cheap. Perhaps I will meet my own NHS doctor there, that would be nice.

It is so good to see the people behind the screen. I have bought a couple of things from Contrado and was very pleased with the colours and speed of delivery. I would have ordered a lot more if it wasn't for the Contrado web site from hell. I have complained about it on a number of occasions but was just told to clear my cache. It did not help with either the speed or things that don't work properly. Sometimes there are washing instructions and sometimes the link is not to be found, the design your product does not always work, just to name a couple of things. I have often gone round in circles trying to find the design. When seeing the final product before buying, the illustration is too small and the magnifier does not always work properly. Checking out and shopping basket was a special kind of hell. Is it because there are many businesses trying to access the site all at once? I think it would have been quicker and easier to have simply visited and bought from the factory. I was curious about the factory and thanks to these videos it has been satisfied.

I posted a question in your “planning your production “ video and would appreciate a response since this video on is about cost of living crisis. I have a product I would love to introduce, made in the UK source here even if the prototype used an italian sourced item it is also readily made here and correlates with reducing in small but significant increments reasons given for rise in energy costs. 1 item deals with simple flips of light switches and is a thin lightweight strip that can be placed at the tops of windows which charge during the day via small solar strips and during dusk when people start flipping the light switch to see it illuminates the area with as much light as there is at dusk maybe as much as the grid tied light . Calculating what it costs to operate a single rooms light even if it saves just 2-3-5 quid a month if 8 million homes incorporated it ,then it collectively equates to 16-24-40 million pounds worth of fuel the power companies claimed they purchase at absurd prices in savings nationally and that’s if each home used them in 2 rooms frequented and light usage is normally neglecting like one in the bathroom and one in the kitchen as I do at home. Mine stays lit until 2-3 in the AM depending how much charge is collected during the day. I extended it by incorporating a photo resistor so when it is absolutely necessary to turn the lights on like cooking a large meal it shuts off and conserves battery but that’s just one item if I had the information required on what gov site to start the research at was clear. So far I found nothing. I’m serious but my effort produces nothing to the point I’m about to abandon all desire to even start anything and just think for myself. As stated that is just one I also have ideas on keeping the cost of heating a little lower but what’s the use when I can’t even get a product on market that could sell for as little as 3-5 quid for a pair and pays for itself in no time, the only issue is people need to get used to not flipping the switch , to add to this the materials besides being locally sourced could be 100% recyclable without any harmful chemicals or massively evasive procedure inexpensively. If possible and others in the same boat as I am would appreciate some information. Thankyou.

What about self production? I have several ideas for products but my plan is a fully automated production line, maybe a final production QC inspection but from the source delivering the raw products that go into it everything like one product I would like to introduce used vacuum forming and pick n place components and everything including packaging and boxing on skids/pallets is done by robotronics . I find it hard to find info on gov sites on such a buisness and insurance info. Not trying to keep jobs from people just trying to maximise the profits while avoiding expenditures like workman’s comp and so on.

It's actually quite facile to discuss EU as being an ideal trading partner purely because of its proximity to the UK given that EU's largest trading partner is China and second is United States both of which Britain now trades with independently. Britain's trading partners prior to EU membership were Commonwealth nations one being Australia. The Australian Dairy Board in Tooley Street London closed on joining the EU as did many British companies large and small whose main export markets were in Commonwealth countries. Rather than sending lace to France for dying why not use one of the Nottingham dyers like Baltex who specialise "Silk & Lace fabrics (including tulle & voiles)" or one of the other lace dyers listed like "Huddersfield Dyeing is a commercial bespoke dye house based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire a town that has been synonymous with textiles and dyeing for centuries." There are more listed even with the scantest of Google searches. I hope one of these companies makes an outreach to Cluny lace to exclude the expensive step in the production process of sending lace to France for dying! Cluny was clearly successful for centuries prior to EU membership in 1973 - did it have trouble sending its lace to France for dying prior to EU membership or did it use British companies? I hope it used British companies and will restart this. I used to buy Cluny lace from suppliers like Olney Amsden of Thame for my fabric shops in Basingstoke Hampshire and Farnham, Surrey. Unfortunately Olney Amsden of Thame (founded in 1810) ceased trading about 15 years ago - nothing to do with Brexit.

The shared history of the United Kingdom with the EU is not really shared. I see the History of the UK that is different from Europe. Yes people came here from Europe. However, events in the UK have not always gone the same way as Europe, but what you say about the Huguenots makes sense. I also think that business should be lead by both men and women. Britain has access to EU's internal market through the negotiated UK/EU trade deal but can now also trade freely with its former Commonwealth partners as well as US, China and emerging markets in India, Africa and South America. Export markets are important to a nation's economic well being and it seems that the EU trades with those well beyond their doorstep as do many nations and have done for centuries. But trying to negotiate overseas customers is a nightmare. Small businesses can't get IOSS numbers to ship to Europe - the cost and the bureaucracy, and the lack of information is a joke. And as for further afield. Well who knows if that will ever be sorted?!?!?!? I can't believe that after all the time they've had to sort this out, we still don't have a mechanism that allows small UK businesses to ship out of the UK. It's ridiculous and frustrating and makes me mad!!!!!

Kate it’s so wonderful to see and hear your voice again! This is all great pieces of advice that I hadn’t even considered - I’ve always had my family involved in the business but it’s clear there are certainly job roles we’re missing! Thank you for this 👏

So glad that you found it useful Deborah. When you have a small business there are so many job hats you need to wear! But it's fun 😃
