      Clint Walker im pretty sure that accounts for 99.5% of why people fail-at/discount/oppose lifting weights for heavier and heavier 5s. Vanity, stupidity, stubborness, lazinesz, and "too-comfortable-ness" are psychological shortcomings not physical ones. SS is teaching me a lot about the imaginary limits we place on ourselves. DTP is HAF

      This psychological barrier applies to everything difficult in life. Not just lifting heavy ass weights.
      Most people never realize their true potential at anything because they lack the mental fortitude and discipline to stick to it through the difficult parts. As soon as the going gets tough, they get going... home.

    I am seeking starting strength content for 2 years now. (Podcasts Book Articles...)
    For now i am studying a different topic (Mechatronics). But when i get my bachelor the fist thing i will do is book a flight to the USA and visit your seminar !!
    And i am already so pumped for that :-)

    On the running, when I ran track (long distance) my coach had us do some stuff with barbell squats, he had us squat high/off and box and jump from half squat bc the range of motion of running would fit that, I don’t wanna get into any issues with that. But he was able to jump squat like in the 400’s. Not a massive dude, but his legs were actual canons. He actually complained his muscle mass slowed him down. My point being, is having some more power in your body doesn’t hurt.

    Just include the bodyweight : strength standards as part of military recruitment requirements... that will force a lot of highschool football programs to fall in line for the students planning to join the military and those who don't will benefit indirectly.

    I knew 2 tennis coaches. One was an expert who "could" coach at Wimbledon. BUT didnt make any money.
    Another was a bit of a coach but made lots of money.
    The difference was the second coach had people skills and the first didnt.

    Great principle, I had sort of forgotten it, in my attempt to always finish my prescribed sets and frequency. So this reminds me of something I read or heard, the first thing when doing anything (gym) is to be ABLE to do it... and then worry about HOW OFTEN or HOW MANY TIMES to do it, that is programming; or as he just said it, "figure out what you can recover from".

    Hey Rip, Have you discussed how to get back into training following an injury in any of your videos? I tweaked a hip muscle which is now mending (my warm up routine got interrupted and I half assed the prep so I messed up). When I get back into the gym, do I start with a lower weight or do I wait a bit longer to heal, then start where I left off? PS I am a 63 yr old novice who has greatly benefitted from strength training. I want to thank you for improving my quality of life.

      Start light. You'd rather start light than too heavy. Too heavy can reinjure, which will set you back even longer.
      Meanwhile, too light just means you may have to work a few more weeks to catch up to your "real" strength. In the greater scheme of lifting for life, what does that matter?
      It's always, always, always better to start too light. Lighter than you think. Because if you missed the mark (by going TOO light)... it's only a matter of (short) time before you are at your "real" strength and then growing.
      The same question often comes up for new lifters starting out on SS. While you don't want to waste weeks by being TOO light, the damage from that is significantly less than starting TOO heavy and burning them out, retarding progress, making them so sore they can't work out the next session, not giving their body a chance to adjust to the new physical demands, and putting them off lifting altogether.
      All for a little ego boost on lift numbers that are not impressive (new lifter) and nobody else cares about but you anyways.

      I don't think you understand the entire point of the section.
      1. The guy never said that having a strong squat is going to make you a better fighter (but this is probably true). The guy said the mental aspect of hitting a heavy 5rm PR on the squat will help you in a 'real life tactical situation and/or self defence situation'
      2. Being bigger and stronger will ALWAYS make you a better fighter. A 220lbs BJJ blue belt will always beat a 160lbs BJJ blue belt. That's the whole point of weight classes. Adding external variances like knives and guns will obviously change these facts but it has nothing to do with the discussion.
      3. Rip clearly says that you need to practice your 'tactical training' or in your case 'basic self defence' separately (at the range, on the bags, on the mats). But, the weight room is where you got strong.

      @A.A.Ron Davis It seems it went over your head, imo. He was above all talking about the mental aspect of it. Imagine you got stabbed with a knife. If you are the kind of person who can go all the way in strength training, never once failing to do all his reps, you are likely the person who will keep on fighting, which will give you a benefit... that benefit being you do not give up when it's getting tough. That's how I understood it.
      I've seen fights and there are people who just want to lay down and play dead. They even take punches and just hope it is over soon. They would benefit from a different mindset.

      I believe Mark Rippetoe used to work with CrossFit in the early days; probably way before it is what it is now though.

      @@Danny-ib6ew He said somewhere he was dabbling in CrossFit for about 3 years.
      He said he was thankful that CrossFit introduced more people to barbell training, but that the way most crossfit trainers approach training sucks (aka what they do isn't training, it is exercise). It is also injury prone, because of that: unskilled people with too little experience trying to lift more than they can with bad form. Never training the skills they need, due to bad coaches with low intelligence pushing too many, too complicated exercises on their 'victims'. (I'm paraphrasing, but that's the jist of what he said.)

    If you showed statistics that squatting is better at preventing injuries than running, maybe that'd change the CEO's mind? (some people actually have done research on this already, try googling "The effect of workplace based strengthening on low back injury rates")

    The way I see it the vast majority of people who choose to train by doing anything except squats, deadlift and presses are too lazy to do those compounds exercise anyway, so it's either that or slacking on the couch.
    It's already a great result they go to train, let alone bracing the most mentally and phisically changelling exercises.

      Cerdelimo I am working up to those compounds... but train four times a week, far from lazy, goblet squats, pressing on machine, general back exercises. If I did the three you cite, it’d be the Olympic bar with 5lbs on each end, I doubt I’d leave the gym alive, humiliation would give me a thrombosis. Not everyone can jump in the deep end.

    When I want to learn, or refresh, on something involving lifting technique, or programming tips, these guys are the gold standard IMO. But when they start bloviating about "only smart people can do this" and "only tough people can do this" or "that 3rd set of squats is gonna be critical for somebody getting shot at in Iraq" I just flip to another video. SS is good, and I can appreciate that they feel a lot of their program is grossly under appreciated.

      Well said. There is no place for this kind of arrogance in modern coaching. A runner like Bolt wouldnt put up with it for more than 1 minute.
      More top athletes have been lost by this authoritarian - I know best, I am never wrong and its my way or the highway.
      This is a coaching seminar and these people should showing the people skills needed. I weight trained in the 80's and these guys are dinosaurs from back then.

      That is a 200mph car with the limiter removed. There is nothing slow about those cars. Have you ever driven one? You can floor it at 80mph, and it will put back in your seat. They are incredible cars. These car weigh around 5000lbs, and are fast. Try that in a small engine. In fact, the smaller engine model, of these cars, is not as fast as the larger engine model. Rip is correct on engine size.

      I’m kind of late to the party here. What foods do you think people over eat on that are majority carbs. All the foods that I can think of that people overeat on are majority fat by calories. Chips/fries, doughnuts,icecream, mashed potato with plenty of butter/cream, fried foods, pizza .
      I rarely see people overeat on foods that are majority carbs such as jellies, white rice, honey, sugar...

      Superstar Banana Mix check the nutrition info on the fatty foods I listed. 100g white potato has about 77 calories. Yes I’m aware there’s some protein in potato but just say it’s pure carb for this example. The average amount of calories in French fries is about 300 per 100g. The only difference is the oil that’s added when it’s friend. Meaning most of the calories in fries comes from fat. Yes there is carbs in it but can you blame the “carbs” in it when most of the calories come from fat. 1g carbs has 4 kcals and 1g fat had 9kcals. That’s more that double. See how much easier it is to over eat. If you go over on your carbs by 50g that’s only 200 calories. If you go over on your fat by 50g that’s 450 kcals. I can’t speak for the average American diet since I don’t live there but his advice works for the average Irish diet. The majority of clients I see overeat fat way too easily.

      Superstar Banana Mix I wasn’t talking about the type of fat. Just dietary fat in general. The fat in vegetables are so minuscule that it’s not even worth counting for me. Relatively lean steak could easily have 7-15g of fat. A decent serving of broccoli for example will have less than 1g of fat. But any fat is easy to overeat on because fat is very energy dense. Foods that are majority fat (but do contain protein/carb because it’s rare to find fat by itself) would be nuts, fatty meat, dairy, avocado... Im not saying these foods are “bad” or unhealthy but they’re easy to eat a lot of calories of and are not very filling per calorie. Try eat boiled chicken breast and broccoli for a day. Just as much as you want until your satisfied all day long, then track the total protein/fat/carb/ calories you consume. Then try eat as much nuts as you want until your satisfied all day long. 99% of people will get a LOT more calories in with the fatty foods compared to the lean protein/fibre rich foods. That’s the point this guy is making

    If Mark is referring to the tacfit training system by Scott Sonnon then I would definitely disagree with his statement of 'fundamentally flawed' as there programs are famous in the assistance of armed personnel all over America with thousands of positive reviews. Their mobility and compensation exercises are far superior to any other that currently exists as i incorporate those exercises with my strength training.

      Nope that's because of the protein. Protein is satiating. Fat isn't.
      You can easily over eat on fat, because there is not much difference in volume in a spoon of fat or two spoons of fat. Yet the amount of calories can easily skyrocket because of it.

      @@gonzothegreat1317 Satiation has less to do with the volume of food you're eating and more to do with hormonal signals. You can be satiated without eating until you're about to burst. The kinds of foods you eat play a role in the hormonal signals which tell your body you're full. Fat is very satiating in this regard, but the kind of fat and what you're eating with the fat matters. If you're eating polyunsaturated fats in potato chips, you can eat forever. If you're eating bacon (which is very high in saturated fat) you will feel full very quickly.

      @@ienjoyapples Well you are wrong. Protein is the most satiating macronutrient, followed by carbs. Fat is actually the least satiating. This is backed up by science. But you can test this for yourself. Eat one kg of butter, one kg of eggs, or one kg of bananas (or salad). Then time when you start to feel hungry.
      The butter will go down easy and isn't very filling. The carbs you took won't go down as easy, because one kilo of salad(or bananas) is a shltload, it'll fill your stomach up to its limits. The eggs however will win: You'll notice that you will go on maybe even a full 24 hours without getting hungry. (I know I've tested this.)
      Think for yourself. And test what I just said. You'll see that you are wrong, this is not something to be ashamed of, because it will be an opportunity to learn.
      Your example in regard to the bacon is true, because bacon is a High Protein source. You are filled up more because of the protein in it.

      @@gonzothegreat1317 You have to look not only at when your body tells you you're full while you're eating, but also how long you stay full before your body tells you you're hungry again. As someone who regularly fasts for 24 hours I can tell you saturated fat is the best. If you're eating carbs you will be hungry again in an hour.

      The caloric density of fat is literally higher than that of carbohydrate and protein combined. There's a certain satiating effect yes but due to the caloric density, it's easier to overeat. 2 tablespoons of butter contain the same amount of calories as a cup and a half of brown/white rice.

      ​@@KurtVogel88There are exceptions of course. Some feel fuller and better on a higher fat diet as opposed to a high carbohydrate diet. For the general populous however, they are likely to fair far better on a higher carb diet especially whenever it's paired with the training that SS lays forth.
      In regard to the hormonal effects, it's likely negligible. Fat is necessary for the production of testosterone and other hormones, and to an extent so is the proper amount of carbohydrate. Hormones for the most part don't necessarily need to be something that is focused on unless it's in special populations (i.e. elderly, TRT etc.) Training to get stronger and simply eating a sufficient diet - that works for you - are really all that matter in this context.

      Protein is more filling than fat. You can easily gobble down a bucket of mayonaise or butter, but try to eat the same amount of steaks, that's hard. And there are 2 times more calories in fat than in protein for the same volume. So you would actually have to eat twice the amount of steaks to really see the effect.

      It is for people who already overeat especially cheese. Low carb is still better but you don't need super high fat. If you really want to lose weight fast, most people are too chicken though.

      So what? Why are you using analogies excessively to make your point? Strenght matters very much, it matters for health and matters for the human race as a whole. Does everyone need to be big and strong, no, but everyone needs to have a base level of strenght to be of good health. Not everyone needs to be strong, but mostly everyone benefits from being strong, at least in some situations in their life. Maybe if you start explaining your point and making sense we can talk, but I'm puzzled as to what you're really getting at here, because it's one thing is to say that not everyone benefits from being big and strong, but it's another to say strenght has nothing to do with anything. One of those makes sense, the other doesn't.

      Rip is not wrong, the vast majority of people won't be intelligent/dedicated enough to actually read the book and understand wtf is going on. Hence people saying that SS sucks because their squat only went from 135 to 200 when they didn't even bother to execute the program correctly in the first place
