    Regarding injuries: the Stress-Recovery-Adaptation model applies to injuries as well. The problem is that the recovery and adaptation time may be very long compared to muscles. Many aches and pains require some time off the stress and then gradual return to the stress, with usually some modification in form. But of course there are some injuries that cannot recover and adapt on their own, and may require surgery.

    So I am told if you get a partial or full knee replacement you should never squat, deadlift or clean on the knee. The reason is the replacement is not meant for weightlifting. I would be curios what your thoughts are on this subject

    How long does it take to recover from knee replacement surgery? Presently, I can squat with 370 lbs. for a 1RM at a bodyweight of 185 lbs, but I had to stop deadlifting because of the pain in my right knee, which is pain free when I squat. My MRI diagnosis is that BOTH knees are "bone on bone." Also, I have been getting Hyalgan shots (Ortho visc) in my right knee only. They help but not with deadlifting. Thanks.

    Bone on Bone hip. Sure, get it fixed and then get it fixed again in 6 months when there is a recall on the hip replacement. This is big money for legal firms because these companies don't seem to be able to make anything that works or is not screwed up or doesn't fail in a few months.

    What would you do if you have adductor pain while squatting? It helps if a use more of close stanc squat, but if i try stance with feet out it hurts. Anytime i try to push knees out it hurts. Any suggestions? Should i just take a break from squatting?

      @@asfdffd i did i cycle of highbar close stance squats with no belt. I also increased my calories. In 3 months the pain was gone. I guess it just healed

      Im going to quote what Ed Coan said at a seminar I went to. Use a stance and position that:
      1. Allows you to hit parallel
      2. Doesn't hurt
      3."feels right"

    Question: When progressing through a linear program with a novice, at what weight point should we stop making jumps and move on to intermediate programming? That is, when is a novice truly ready to graduate to intermediate? For example, with myself and the people I am teaching I start out making 5kg. jumps, on to 2.5kg., 1kg., .5kg., .25kg. How I decide that it is time to lower the weight progression is that once they can no longer do 3x5 with the weight for 2 sessions with at least 5 minutes rest between sets (sometimes 7-8 minutes for squat and deadlift). I also take consideration their nutrition and sleep (please correct me if I am wrong but this should cover the 3 questions of weight progression, rest between sets and diet/sleep). Would you say this is a correct method for a novice linear progression? Is the weight jumps practical? Is it too much or too little? Would you change anything about the weight jumps? Forgive me for using the metric system, I was born and raised in Houston, Texas but I have been living in Europe for a few years and they just love their Royale with cheeses here. Thank you for your expertise and time, it is much appreciated.

      Andrew Warfield When you can make more progress with once a week jumps than twice a week jumps while microloaded, it's probably better to switch. that probably means something like 2.5kg on the squat, 1-1.25 on the bench, and 0.5-0.75 on the press. For a very average male. But there's a lot more to it than that and I unfortunately can't comment. the women I train for instance have always had trouble with even 2kg jumps on the squat. I guess it comes down to knowing what your client can do, given that you ultimately don't know their recovery factors (regardless of what they tell you).
      Also, for any clients with other goals, or if the switch will allow them to progress rather than burn out and give up. End NLP is hard and some people don't have what it takes mentally. It'd make more sense to cut NLP short and progress with a more sustainable model rather than to have someone quit or perhaps hurt themselves and blame you.

      I have been running a novice linear progression for about 6 months and I feel that it is nearing the end. So I bought a set of micro plates to drag out the LP as long as possible. I have been able to continue the LP with smaller and smaller jumps. It's great really. Usually people are ego driven and want to move to intermediate prog. too soon wouldn't you say? Since I did spend the cash on the fractional plates with a pair of .5kg and a .125kg plates. I guess I really want to use them too. Also, my logic is that if I can continue to make a .75kg, or .5kg. or even a .25kg jump continually every training session that will add up to a lot over time. Once I can't go beyond a .25kg jump it is for sure time for intermediate programming. What are your thought on this idea? Is it assbackwards and I should forget about it?

      When you have done 3 resets. Isn't this in the book? Assuming everything else is in order (sleep, food, rest between sets as needed)... once you have to reset 3 times, you are done with LP.
      That means you failed to hit 3x5, had to reset by 10 lbs, work back up... failed again, etc. 3 times.

      Practical Programming 3e has an example of a "well-executed novice linear progression" that takes up a page or two. It has a few other examples like that.
      They'll be wary of doing a lot of that since it varies hugely between individuals.

    Everytime I start my LP (I run outside in the summer, lift in winter) I get really bad DOMS, so I end up completely cutting out upper body and just doing Squats and Deadlifts to give myself more recovery time... not really SS but thats the routine I've fallen into the past couple years.

      Karl Toth if youve done that for a couple of years, youre doing something wrong. The LP should only take a couple if months, and then you move on to intermediate programming

      I only lift during the winter months when it is too cold to run outside. I don't follow a consistent program and take several weeks off whenever I get too sore or tweak something. I eat a normal diet. It is perfectly possible to still be a novice lifter after several years under those conditions.

      whoa whoa hold on a sec there why did you say that linear progression SHOULD only take X nr of months ? It's structured to take you to your max achievable as a noob. I've been doing it for almost a year and i'm still making progress. It varies on the individual. Don't give people incorrect info. You could be on a novice program for more than 1.5 years. It's all about making sure you get good at the basics. I'm still improving but i got injured A LOT, but i got better every time, and i'm still training.

      To be honest, it sounds like you are not consistent. SS sort of pushes you in a powerlifting direction, and unless you condition your body to handle increasing amounts of pressure each week, you're bound to fall back and get DOMS.. Just my 2 cents bro.

      I think Martin is correct that if you follow the program by the book, you will hit a plateau after ten weeks and no longer be a novice... my point was that most people don't follow the program by the book, myself included, for one reason or another.

    If the guy at the end has elbow problems squatting why not suggest high bar squat? The difference is tiny for all but competition lifters

      Because Starting Strength is Low Bar.
      Because elbow problems are not the specific purview of Low Bar. Usually it's bad form. Depending on individual body shape/flexibility, there are a variety of ways to Low Bar squat in adjusting your grip.

      entee123 i had horrible elbow pain from rounding my back on the ascent. It didn't make sense until I filmed it. Ur arms/elbows intercept the weight to an extreme.

      I used to squat with a fairly narrow grip. Basically just outside of my shoulders. I couldn’t keep a completely neutral wrist, so I decided to widen my grip some (after reading the book and seeing several of Rip’s videos). Almost immediately, I had bad elbow pain and shoulder pain. I even recorded myself and everything looked good. Just like the book.
      What was actually happening was, I created a longer moment arm with a more “open” elbow and the bar wasn’t resting on my back/shoulders (meaty area) and I was holding some of the weight with my arms. At lower weights, it’s not as noticeable. At around 300lbs and beyond it would cause me to not be able to finish a single workout.
      So, suggestion, even if it “looks good” it might not actually be good. Fix ur grip. For me, it was moving my grip closer together and mentally telling myself that my hips and back lift the weight NOT my arms.

    Anyone notice that the younger sidekicks at these seminars talk exactly the same with a forced bass and erratic pace? I feel as if they are trying to match Rip's gravel voice and unnecessarily trying to be authoritative.
    You're wearing the uniform or you get your own microphone, you don't have anything to prove kids. Just relax a bit and be natural.

    I had plantar fasciitis for 1.5 years, had cortisone injections, PT, ice, rollers, shoe inserts, sonic therapy, you fucking name it- I did it. Finally just gave and one day it went away.

      entee123 that's a completely made up fact. Not all long term lifters that are not stupid and overtrain do not develop tendinitis more than sedentary people.

      Crim Essentially yes, we are not meant to be in perfect conditions, we will always have a form of injury, pain or stress but that doesn´t outweigh the benefits of the actions that cause it. İ can get off my ass and slip while walking to the kitchen, doesn´t make me stop living life.

      It is essential to train your wife. How else is she supposed to know what is expected of her?! :D Same with dragons. If you let them roam free, they burn down everything in sight.
      On a slightly more serious note, it is a quick way to break down a relationship. You can't change people; they have to change themselves. If you train people close to you, it can easily lead to strains (in relationship) and disappointments... That's what I heard anyway. It's the same with trying to get your spouse to eat differently. It's too intrusive. I think a more neutral person can book more successes training someone.

      I'm not married, but my friends who are married and have tried to teach their wives how to do things like shoot or learn a new skill have told me that it usually doesn't go well. The husband will criticize the wife's form or something and somehow they'll start arguing about him not picking up his socks or whatever. It's a risky proposition is what I'm saying
