I agree that FF6 was a masterpiece. However, while the "remastered" graphics I think are mostly garbage (with a few individual exceptions), I think the OST remaster is genuinely fantastic. Hardware limitations at the time meant that great music at the time had to rely pretty much exclusively on melody, as depth and detail were much harder to bring out. The melodic diversity in such a huge score made the original ost Uematsu's greatest achievement. It's for this reason, the combination of brilliant melody, with room for technical improvement that continue to attract reinterpretations to this day of music like that of ff6. I think the remastered OST is great, it both stays faithful to the themes of the original, but adds depth that couldn't have been had at the time. But seriously, I was actually shocked at how bad the graphics were. These online comparisons don't really do a good job, the graphics were designed specifically for an oldschool tv, and there were specific tricks they used to make things look a certain way in the original that can't really be replicated on a modern screen. Lacking an old tv to play on, imo, the best looking way of playing ff6 is with the hq filter on zsnes. That's very much open to opinion, but I think it does a good job, certainly a better job than this remake. Plus, why make menu's that are super high rez and smooth, when the rest of the game isn't? It doesn't match, like pick up any great indie game that uses similar art styles, stardew valley for example, they make menus visually consistent with the rest of the game, obviously. It's genuinely mindblowing to me that they could have done such a great job, and obviously spent quite a lot of money on the OST, while failing so badly on the art.

I prefer the softer, smoother blended together look on the snes. The snes version also looks less flat with more depth. I really don't get why people like large sharp square pixels. Large pixels in retro games were due to hardware limitations, for a remaster why not use smaller pixels double or triple the pixel count for each sprite? Really take advantage of modern hardware and animate everything smoothly with many frames of animation? A proper remaster of this game could look incredible with detailed smooth, softer blended together graphics with lots of light and shade depth while still maintaining the original aesthetic.
What ypu are missing is the crt tv. That is why old games look better in emus with scablines. Now, for the most sinilar experience, use a light bilinear filter and a crt shader and watch the game become alive. Its amazing.
Getting an SNES Classic Edition is a better experience than playing the Pixel Remaster version. Changing the character sprites was so unnecessary... the music too. Any time they do this they should include an option for the original sprites and music.
As someone who never played the original, I think the SNES version looks better. The sprites look less flat and there's nice atmospheric touches, like the clouds at 5:05 which are basically absent in the remaster; or the smoke coming out the chimneys in the intro, which in the original look hand-crafted and in accordance with the art-style, but in the remaster look autogenerated and weirdly too digital compared to the rest. Bleh. I wish Square just released the SNES version on new consoles but with the new translation and an option to switch to the new soundtrack.
They should’ve made the character sprites more sharper & darker smh it looks more pixilated than the snes version and it’s newer! 😂🤦🏽 I’m starting to believe ff6 will never get the proper treatment it deserves
The older look has much more color depth and cohesion over the crisper look of the remaster, that's for sure. A couple battle backgrounds and Mode 7 bits arguably look better in the PR version - and widescreen is great of course - but overall I definitely prefer the original's look, sadly enough.
this just in: square releases a direct port of FF6..... which is just a custom version of SNES9x with an FF6 ROM, and you cant customize either. and sells it for 60 dollars.
It's not the resolution that's the issue, unless you're still using a CRT monitor your monitor only displays one resolution anyway. It's a question of methods of scaling. SNES games do not look as good on a modern display as they did on a tv of the time. The way pixels are projected is totally different and there were a variety of coloration tricks that were used to achieve a certain look that don't come out right. So all that said, you are left with two options: Redoing all the graphics in the game, or using a method of up-scaling. The remaster did a bit of both.... very poorly. Some of the redone sprites are atrocious, many of the scaled tiles have artifacts. And, why use smooth looking menus, fonts, and effects in a game that otherwise doesn't look that way? Visuals in any medium should at a minimum be consistent, the remaster breaks this consistency. IMO the best looking way of playing FF6 is simply using the HQ filter in an emulator. It's not perfect, but it is at least consistent.

Aside from the effects and battle backgrounds / fields, my god it's awful, the best example I saw was the Cultist's tower (23:37), maybe you added filters to the original game but even so the Remaster should be at least on par. Thanks for showing the video, at least I know that I shouldn't ever get it and stick to the original.
I'm gonna play the pixel remaster for the first time on the 19th, so I'm not blinded by nostalgia. Here are my honest thoughts. - I definitely prefer the character models of the remaster - The backgrounds in the battles and when exploring do generally look better to me in the remaster. It's actually the main reason I wanted to play the remaster - somehow, the overworld exploration looks better in the original. The remaster might just look too washed out in these areas. - I'm not sure if it's something that can be changed in game, but the original ost sounds better because it feels like it's in the foreground while the remaster sounds like it's in the background. I'm gonna experiment with both and see what I like best. Leaning more towards the og for this one - In contrast to the previous point, the opera songs sound better to me in the remaster. Could be because the actual voices don't sound 16 bit anymore. Is it possible to switch soundtracks on the fly when playing? - A lot of the sfx sound better in the og. Same reason I had for the ost - It sounds like the sfx has a lot more presence in the og compared to the remaster. Again, not sure if this is something that can be adjusted in game. - Finally, I do really like how the spells look in the remaster. They look really "magical" to me lol Anyways, the fact that we can make these comparisons at all really shows how great the og was for its time. Can't wait to play ffvi for the first time
Blurriness on SNES makes everything look less like pixel and more like illustrations, it's really obvious on the field when looking at the mountains. In the PR, it's so pixel perfect that mountains don't really stand out from each other.
Pixel remaster is better but not worth the price tag, so few improvements, the steam version lacks the boosters from the consoles and doesn't even have VSync!? They don't even care about adding the extra gba content, In FFV there were extra jobs, so must likely they will release in the future another version that has that content to keep milking those games.
I played the hell out of this game and the game was passed around so much. between friends the sticker is all scratched up lol That being said, I think people are really nostalgia clouded as well. I played this and it looks incredible! They did a very good job.
The SNES version for me is better, I think the remaster version was made without proper treatment and without any kind of shader, which discredits the version
FF VI is new to me, so we can't say this is my being nostalgic. The music is supposed to be from a synth, approximate to but not exactly an orchestra. On the graphics, why not use the filters and renderers that are in emulators - which dramatically enhance them (or conversely despecialise, making it look like a shit NTFC TV) yet keeping them close to what the creators intended?
idk the cohesion of the snes game just trumps all the changes of the remaster for me. the small spites seem lost on the larger battle screen, the effects look out of place and the orchestrated music doesn't compare to the chrunchy 16 bit samples
Very lazy money grab remaster, I didn’t play the original so I’m not “nostalgia clouded” but you can tell from 23:38 that the original had more graphical details and it was more artistic .. the remaster look like amateur crap
Snes version looks alot more clean. The character portraits and sprites are so bad on pixel remaster that it constantly disengages me from the experience. The pixel remaster engine works well on earlier ff but not the snes ones unfortunately
I am not impressed. SNES looks more coherent, Pixel Remaster looks off most of the time. The music fidelity might have been improved, but it lacks the punch of the original 16bit OST.
The maps look bad. You can tell they had major problems upscaling the animations. The fans for example....they look awful.... They also look super washed out.... I think the battles were designed with a wider resolution in mind, so all that stuff scales nicely.
The soundtrack is a hell of a lot better. Original composer remade it. It's what the SNES was trying to do. This is my favorite game on SNES my favorite system. Guys are crazy thinking SNES sounds better

@C P pixel remaster has better backgrounds and animations for spells and espers but everything else looks terrible compared to the snew version especially the enemy sprites
Okay am I going crazy or something? Because from what im seeing, the PR graphics have objectively more details added to it than the snes version, yet everyone is acting like its the opposite. Sorry but i think there really is some nostalgia blindness going on here. And the remastered music is incredible. You dont see this kind of mentality with the other games in the PR, people have more of an attachment to VI (it's my favorite FF), so any slight kind of change, even when it's an improvement, they don't like. Well frankly, piss on that. Improvement is good.
@@yibril2254 Okay, Explain how? Because all they basically did was recolor them to look more accurate to how they're supposed to look based on the character portraits and concept art. I fail to see what's so bad about that, other than how they look different from how they used to.
the SNES did *not* display final fantasy 6.... also, the PR version looks like garbage. edit: ah, japanese version. should ahve watched 0.000000000000000001 seconds more.

Blurriness on SNES makes everything look less like pixel and more like illustrations, it's really obvious on the field when looking at the mountains. In the PR, it's so pixel perfect that mountains don't really stand out from each other.
Somehow it feels like a downgrade
new one looks good but unfaithful artstyle wise
Pixel remaster is better but not worth the price tag, so few improvements, the steam version lacks the boosters from the consoles and doesn't even have VSync!?
They don't even care about adding the extra gba content, In FFV there were extra jobs, so must likely they will release in the future another version that has that content to keep milking those games.
Ewww it looks so cheap.. With no nostalgia involved I can say as a fact the snes graphics looked better..
이건 원작을 즐긴 저같은 올드유저의 편견이겠지요 ^^;
I feel like some people are nostalgia clouded i even grew up with this and i think it looks good enough...
I played the hell out of this game and the game was passed around so much. between friends the sticker is all scratched up lol
That being said, I think people are really nostalgia clouded as well. I played this and it looks incredible! They did a very good job.
The original is better simply because I am blinded by nostalgia and wish it was still the 90’s even though it’s been 30 years
Why do the new characters sprites look like garbage? Couldn’t they make a version like octopath traveller,
they would probably screw up there.
CRT filters are shit. You have to have a serious case of nostalgia to apply them nowadays... Coming from someone from the 90s, btw.
idk the cohesion of the snes game just trumps all the changes of the remaster for me. the small spites seem lost on the larger battle screen, the effects look out of place and the orchestrated music doesn't compare to the chrunchy 16 bit samples
This games deserves to be on the PS Vita 🥰
sorry, pixel remastered is better, I am so for it and i own it :)
The opera scene sealed it for me 🎉
Phantom Forest was gorgeous on SNES, hideous on PR. Why did they do that ?
Very lazy money grab remaster, I didn’t play the original so I’m not “nostalgia clouded” but you can tell from 23:38 that the original had more graphical details and it was more artistic .. the remaster look like amateur crap
That guitar in the boss fights music in the PR is awful
Doesnt really look any better imo, in some cases it looks worse, especially if you played it on a crt
they should have started with a remake like ff7 before ff7, i think this story is better
hope they make ff6 remake like they did to ff3 !!
nice
The music is better on the snes.
The og has better music and atmosphere
damm zozo rly look good in pr
the snes version has better graphics xD
Snes version looks alot more clean. The character portraits and sprites are so bad on pixel remaster that it constantly disengages me from the experience. The pixel remaster engine works well on earlier ff but not the snes ones unfortunately
in my opinion the PR they used is barely acceptable for FF1, but not anyhting else.
@@matthewbarabas3052 lol yee I replayed ff1 with pr, seemed fine.
Tried 6, damn this looks terrible!
I must say, the music was in the original much better. The pixel remaster sounds just bad against the original.
I am not impressed. SNES looks more coherent, Pixel Remaster looks off most of the time. The music fidelity might have been improved, but it lacks the punch of the original 16bit OST.
the new music is kinda crap
The maps look bad. You can tell they had major problems upscaling the animations. The fans for example....they look awful....
They also look super washed out....
I think the battles were designed with a wider resolution in mind, so all that stuff scales nicely.
Some stuff is more detailed and some other is dull and generic af, a shame.
The soundtrack is a hell of a lot better. Original composer remade it. It's what the SNES was trying to do. This is my favorite game on SNES my favorite system. Guys are crazy thinking SNES sounds better
No, Nobuo Uematsu didn’t remake the music.
@@nyjay yeah he did
@@paulerlingheuser8453 NOPE. He only “supervised”, but had no hand in the actual process. Even the opera vocals was just him joking to the producer that they should add them in different languages. There are already multiple interviews and sources where you can read up on his input.
he only supervised it. he didnt make it. therefore, its crap.
I think the graphics look terrible compared to the SNES
They do. They are hideous.
Lol
Hmm really🤔
the backgrounds are beautiful redone, baren falls as example
@@CP86164 some people would never be happy.
@C P pixel remaster has better backgrounds and animations for spells and espers but everything else looks terrible compared to the snew version especially the enemy sprites
Pixel remaster has better graphic but I still prefer the original version.
Wtf snes version is better lol
Okay am I going crazy or something? Because from what im seeing, the PR graphics have objectively more details added to it than the snes version, yet everyone is acting like its the opposite. Sorry but i think there really is some nostalgia blindness going on here. And the remastered music is incredible. You dont see this kind of mentality with the other games in the PR, people have more of an attachment to VI (it's my favorite FF), so any slight kind of change, even when it's an improvement, they don't like. Well frankly, piss on that. Improvement is good.
It’s not nostalgia, the characters sprites in the pr look horrible
@@yibril2254 Okay, Explain how? Because all they basically did was recolor them to look more accurate to how they're supposed to look based on the character portraits and concept art. I fail to see what's so bad about that, other than how they look different from how they used to.
the SNES did *not* display final fantasy 6.... also, the PR version looks like garbage.
edit: ah, japanese version. should ahve watched 0.000000000000000001 seconds more.
PR best version hands down. Everything bad you say about it should be confined to the first steam remaster, which was AWFUL. The last PR has better graphics, music, translation and gameplay. I'm sorry, but you're just nostalgic.
the SNES is the best and only version you should play.
Pixel remaster clears OG
Pixel remaster looks way better IMO
UGH, stick to the SNES version. The more Square rereleases their games the worse they get.
