    The SNES music sounded so full bodied even compared to the new orchestrated ost. FF6 was a masterpiece. A direct port with some bug fixes, wide screen support, and achievements was all that was needed.

      and yet so many people seem to want a remake, lol
      honestly while I have the original SNES version, the PSX version, AND The GBA version, the GBA version is the one I keep going back to every couple years. It's probably the most well-polished port with all the bug fixes that seemed necessary, and no major graphical or audio changes. (Yes the sound chip is different, but it's not different in a bad way)

    • @entelin
      @entelin Год назад

      I agree that FF6 was a masterpiece. However, while the "remastered" graphics I think are mostly garbage (with a few individual exceptions), I think the OST remaster is genuinely fantastic. Hardware limitations at the time meant that great music at the time had to rely pretty much exclusively on melody, as depth and detail were much harder to bring out. The melodic diversity in such a huge score made the original ost Uematsu's greatest achievement. It's for this reason, the combination of brilliant melody, with room for technical improvement that continue to attract reinterpretations to this day of music like that of ff6. I think the remastered OST is great, it both stays faithful to the themes of the original, but adds depth that couldn't have been had at the time.
      But seriously, I was actually shocked at how bad the graphics were. It's extremely novice work, the recolor of the overworld is awful, almost all of the sprites are smudged out messes, Realm's sprite being an exception. There are also tears between many tiles, sloppy rescales, it's such garbage.. These online comparisons don't really do a good job, the graphics were designed specifically for an oldschool tv, and there were specific tricks they used to make things look a certain way in the original that can't really be replicated on a modern screen. Lacking an old tv to play on, imo, the best looking way of playing ff6 is with the hq filter on zsnes. That's very much open to opinion, but I think it does a good job, certainly a better job than this remake. Plus, why make menu's that are super high rez and smooth, when the rest of the game isn't? It doesn't match, like pick up any great indie game that uses similar art styles, stardew valley for example, they make menus visually consistent with the rest of the game, obviously.
      It's genuinely mindblowing to me that they could have done such a great job, and obviously spent quite a lot of money on the OST, while failing so badly on the art.

      Ff6 is not masterpiece,ff7 do everything much better

    • @entelin
      @entelin Год назад

      @@gdassspar6nar FF7 was a great game and I respect anyone's opinion that likes it better than FF6. However, it's objectively untrue that FF7 did everything better than FF6. It was a much less consistent game in many ways.
      For starters, FF7 obviously had a great story, it was trying to do some fairly complex things, it was trying to be mysterious, and that's a harder thing to pull off than what FF6 was doing. However I'm not convinced it was in fact executed very well, the amount of confusion online about it could be taken as evidence that this is the case. I'm not making a claim of which games plot is "better", but simply that FF6 fully succeeded in what it was trying to portray, while FF7 did not.
      The rendered backgrounds looked great but while mixing that with 3d sprites was novel, it was too early to be done well, they didn't look good even at the time. Additionally they used different main character models in battle than in the rest of the game. Then there was the fact that it had loading times between screens and before every battle and was spanned across multiple CD's. Compare that with FF6 which was a snappy and contiguous experience from start to finish while having a consistent graphical style that still looks good today.
      FF7 also loved to waste players time with long flashy animations. Knights of the Round became a meme for this, but all the summons were very long and many people forget just how long it took for every battle to even start with the camera cinematically swinging around at the start of every battle. FF6 by comparison kept a consistent pace with everything.
      Lastly, FF7 certainly had a handful of great tracks, however taken as a whole I think FF6's soundtrack comes out on top by quite a bit. FF7's soundtrack is less consistent, and I think if you take off nostalgia goggles as best you can, and compare the less important tracks of each game you'll find that FF6's themes on average are compositionally much stronger. If you want a more objective measurement just search youtube for how much attention the two games soundtrack has gotten by concerts, other musicians, and just general popularity compared to that of FF7, and this is true despite FF7 getting almost five times more sales.

    Am I crazy or does the original look and even sound better in a lot of the comparisons? The remaster looks too bright and washed out in a number of the scenes. Clear example is edgar exploring world map on chocobo at 4:25 looks great vs remaster at 4:32 looking too bright and washed out. Also the rapid water flow at 5:43 vs the remaster waterflow at 5:50. The remaster sounds like a calm stream.

    I prefer the softer, smoother blended together look on the snes. The snes version also looks less flat with more depth. I really don't get why people like large sharp square pixels. Large pixels in retro games were due to hardware limitations, for a remaster why not use smaller pixels double or triple the pixel count for each sprite? Really take advantage of modern hardware and animate everything smoothly with many frames of animation? A proper remaster of this game could look incredible with detailed smooth, softer blended together graphics with lots of light and shade depth while still maintaining the original aesthetic.

I'm aware of some of the qol changes, like with Sabin's blitz moves, but I'd rather have the old system attached to a great looking game than the new system on a game that looks inconsistent and just bad in places. As someone who never played the original, I think the SNES version looks better. The sprites look less flat and there's nice atmospheric touches, like the clouds at 5:05 which are basically absent in the remaster; or the smoke coming out the chimneys in the intro, which in the original look hand-crafted and in accordance with the art-style, but in the remaster look autogenerated and weirdly too digital compared to the rest. Bleh. I wish Square just released the SNES version on new consoles but with the new translation and an option to switch to the new soundtrack.

    Higher resolution dosn't always look better. Wish there was a option to lower the resolution in the pixel remaster.

    • @entelin
      @entelin Год назад

      It's not the resolution that's the issue, unless you're still using a CRT monitor your monitor only displays one resolution anyway. It's a question of methods of scaling. SNES games do not look as good on a modern display as they did on a tv of the time. The way pixels are projected is totally different and there were a variety of coloration tricks that were used to achieve a certain look that don't come out right. So all that said, you are left with two options: Redoing all the graphics in the game, or using a method of up-scaling. The remaster did a bit of both.... very poorly. Some of the redone sprites are atrocious, many of the scaled tiles have artifacts. And, why use smooth looking menus, fonts, and effects in a game that otherwise doesn't look that way? Visuals in any medium should at a minimum be consistent, the remaster breaks this consistency.
      IMO the best looking way of playing FF6 is simply using the HQ filter in an emulator. It's not perfect, but it is at least consistent.

    I'm gonna play the pixel remaster for the first time on the 19th, so I'm not blinded by nostalgia. Here are my honest thoughts.
    - I definitely prefer the character models of the remaster
    - The backgrounds in the battles and when exploring do generally look better to me in the remaster. It's actually the main reason I wanted to play the remaster
    - somehow, the overworld exploration looks better in the original. The remaster might just look too washed out in these areas.
    - I'm not sure if it's something that can be changed in game, but the original ost sounds better because it feels like it's in the foreground while the remaster sounds like it's in the background. I'm gonna experiment with both and see what I like best. Leaning more towards the og for this one
    - In contrast to the previous point, the opera songs sound better to me in the remaster. Could be because the actual voices don't sound 16 bit anymore. Is it possible to switch soundtracks on the fly when playing?
    - A lot of the sfx sound better in the og. Same reason I had for the ost - It sounds like the sfx has a lot more presence in the og compared to the remaster. Again, not sure if this is something that can be adjusted in game.
    - Finally, I do really like how the spells look in the remaster. They look really "magical" to me lol
    Anyways, the fact that we can make these comparisons at all really shows how great the og was for its time. Can't wait to play ffvi for the first time

On the graphics, why not use the filters and renderers that are in emulators - which dramatically enhance them (or conversely despecialise, making it look like a shit NTFC TV) yet keeping them close to what the creators intended?

    Картриджный оригинал выглядит мрачнее, за счëт чего создаëтся некая присущая атмосфера этой части. Ремастер слишком яркиий и возможно не передаëт в полной мере изначальную задумку авторов.

    I am not impressed. SNES looks more coherent, Pixel Remaster looks off most of the time. The music fidelity might have been improved, but it lacks the punch of the original 16bit OST.

    Okay am I going crazy or something? Because from what im seeing, the PR graphics have objectively more details added to it than the snes version, yet everyone is acting like its the opposite. Sorry but i think there really is some nostalgia blindness going on here. And the remastered music is incredible. You dont see this kind of mentality with the other games in the PR, people have more of an attachment to VI (it's my favorite FF), so any slight kind of change, even when it's an improvement, they don't like. Well frankly, piss on that. Improvement is good.
