    Though this song was written by Jack Segal and Robert Wells, I credit Paul Desmond in the title because his 1966 rendition rarely leaves my record player, and served as my inspiration (and quasi-transcription) for this cover. In fact, jazz music-especially standards, ballads, and the Great American Songbook-is my favorite music to listen to and play, yet if I'm not mistaken, this is my first recorded video performing a standard.
    This is dedicated to the memory of my Opa, Dirk Guldemond, who my unusual spelling of "Derik" was inspired by ("Dirk"). He passed in 2004 and would've turned 100 this May. He loved music and played the accordion, and I like to imagine that he might've enjoyed staying up late like I do playing ballads like these. He was charming, handsome, and sartorially savvy; the tie I’m wearing in the video belonged to him.
    We unfortunately didn’t get to see each other very often since he lived in Holland, but I feel a deep connection to him nonetheless. I often wonder if my affinity for romance and passion comes from his genetics. Occasionally I have this sort of “Back To The Future” style daydream where he and I are both about the same age and we’re friends, laughing and drinking at European jazz clubs and flirting with beautiful women. That’s where this song takes me.
    All it’s missing is some accordion.

    Wonderfull. One of my favorite songs. Rare are the young musicians who are inspired by Desmond, for me the best alto sax with Parker and Cannonball Adderley. Your sound is very nice and your voice too. and i share your passion for standards and american songbook. You're really a good musician. I will send this video to my friends.

    If I had any musical ablility at all the Sax would be my thing. Such a beautiful and soulful sound. Great interpretation Derik. My father was Opa to my children and I am Opa to my grandchildren. And no kidding but I still wear one of my father's ties. It has the Hamburg City crest on it and it just reminds me of my other home.

    My wife played this for me and I immediately recognized the Paul Desmond solo! I'm 65 years old and Paul Desmond's performance with guitarist Jim Hall playing When Joanna Loved Me is one of my all time favorite recordings. I have the original album. You did a fantastic job playing everything and singing. You should send this to Tony Bennett because this was one of his famous songs and he named his daughter Joanna. BTW you went to USC Thornton School with my daughter and I've been admiring your career since then. Great job again!! Keep up the great work!

      WOWWW!! Larry, this made my night reading this. It's one of my all time favorite recordings also, although I have to say "Bossa Antigua" takes the cake for the #1 spot! I didn't realize that about Tony Bennett, how cool. and FIGHT ON!!! Who is your daughter?? Thanks for following and supporting all these years! :)

      @@DerikNelson My daughter's name is Marissa and she got her BM, MM, DMA in oboe performance at SC. She side-lined as oboe girl on "Glee" when you did that. If this was your first video of a standard, you should do more! Buble and Connick, Jr. will have to watch their backs!!

    What a beautiful song. It's one of the very best songs I have heard, and you sing it perfectly.
    I love the alto sax which reminds me so much of my precious late husband who played the sax in a band in high school. Can I buy this ?

    More alto! You've got a great Desmond-ey sound. What mouthpiece did you use on that?

    • @DerikNelson
      @DerikNelson  3 года назад +1

      Oh gosh thank you!! Man, the mouthpiece is still just the Selmer C-Star from middle school band 😂🙈 Desmond has my fav tone of all time, this was partly just an exercise in transcription and trying to cop that breathy dry flute-like sound into my playing. A lot of takes hahaha 😛

      @@DerikNelson I've always called it the "flute with balls" sound. :)
      Des is my favorite too. About to pick up a Meyer G mouthpiece, they say it channels old Desmond and Art Pepper.
      Probably my favorite tune of his is the "Glad To Be Unhappy" cover. In fact, that entire album......
