Like Dean Martin for instance portraying the constantly drunk alcoholic. Most people thought this was real. But in most of his performances, it was apple juice in his glass. Sure, like Ed, he drank socially like most of that generation. But he was not a drunk or an alcoholic. Although many sources state that after his son died, he DID in fact begin to drink to excess.

Man, I’m glad I watched something else on TV when this aired..How can a grown man at 37 marry a girl that was 17? And their parents were OKAY with it?? Wow…
By today's standards, this would be considered to be statutory rape. Hard to believe she was only 17, and he was 37. I vaguely remember this, growing up in the 60's. I'm sure some of the younger viewers think this was a gag, or staged, which I, and the rest of the old folks, can assure you, it most certainly was not. Pretty wild, huh?
Oh PLEASE Karen! She could most certainly marry today at 17 in New York (which is where this took place). She just needs parental permission. And her father DID give her away so he obviously approved!
If a 17 year old marries a man, no matter what age, in her own free will, she has every right to. Calling that rape is sexist and belittling. You can gossip about it all you want, insinuating that she doesn’t know what she is doing and that she soon will leave him, alright, do what sou want. But calling it rape is like saying she is not only making a mistake but is also way too stupid to even be accountable for mistakes.
@@joachimb5721 It's STATUTORY RAPE, and the fact that he was 20 years older than her would weigh heavily in such a case. That was over 50 years ago. And I don't know about U.S. laws (yes, I'm uneducated) but in Europe a 17-year old is not a child and I don't think it is wise to treat them as one. This is the first time of hearing about Tiny Tim's wedding let alone on TV. I thought the ceremony was sincere and sweet. The only thing I remember is his "tip toe through the tulips.
Thank you for posting 💖💖💖
Believe it or not, this is the first time I've ever seen this! I've heard of it to death, but until now, I've never even seen it on any retrospective.
Me too! I remember when this happened but didn't watch it at the time. Was a teenager. Really cool to finally see it after all these years.
My very first time to stay up “late” for something on television!
You have to wonder how many people knew Tiny Tim's real name (Herbert Khaury) before this aired.

Turn on the 'closed captions' @13:39 Carson asks Tiny Tim if he's ever had a glass of champagne. 😂

Tiny Tim and Miss Vicky had honey and milk on their wedding day that was their drink.

I can't stop smiling. What a wonderful memory.
Except that she's 17 he is 37
@@mariom6602 Not anymore!!! Lol!
@@dea9273 still he was marrying a 17 year old while being almost 40
@@mariom6602 You just added 3 years to his age, but not 3 years to hers. He was 37. She was 4 months shy of her 18th birthday, and had parental consent. They had a daughter together.
@@mariom6602 It was a wonderful memory for me because I was a child, and my whole family was together, sitting in the living room watching together.
I was just four days old when this happened! My folks told this story on my 25th birthday in 1994 and they were in time to see it happened because we were discharged from the hospital the day before. Want to dedicate this in memory of my parents who were new to this country at that time!
No One during ceremony was smiling except Tiny Tim and Miss Vickie. The rest looked like they were at a funeral, in a way they were.
I was thinking the exact same thing - looked from the outside like a wedding but felt more like a funeral, especially the wedding party. Really odd.
I remember as a kid, my mom and dad letting me stay up to watch this wedding. My dad didn't know it but, Miss Vicki is his 2nd cousin through her mom and his grandpa. He's now gone, but he would've found it funny that he allowed us kids to stay up late for this rare time. I hope the best for Vicki and her family.
Those dresses! The late 1960s through mid 1970s really did have the greatest fashion of all time. Home decor, too. Those were the dsys. I wasn't there, but they were. If only I'd been around to revel in it all.
This is so sweet. Thx for sharing with us. i wish the "old times" were still here (sometimes) .... the people are so cold and angry now.
I was 7 but I wasn’t allowed to stay up that late. Lol. Wonder why this captured America’s attention so much.
Being from Toronto, I was always impressed that Tim was a Maple Leafs fan! lol
I know. One of the weirder random facts I often ponder from time to time.
Lol he knew he was setting tiny Tim up by asking him to get married on the show, he knew how the game is played. I think allot of people played him thinking he was a type of simple fool.
Johnny took the bait. That was the intention of Herby. Herby was kinky , but he craved attention on the media . The shy, introverted character was just an act, or he would not have been in the media so much. He loved it . 😜😜😜
It is weird if he was 37 and she was 17, it makes it more weird that she was a teenager when he was dating her
Ed going straight for the champagne
But it was JOHNNY who really wanted it. HE was the one with the drinking problem. Not Ed.
@@retroguy9494Also Ed: comes to work drunk
@@gm12551 Yea but you need to know the backstory on that one. Ed had attended a charity event earlier that afternoon where cocktails were served. He just had one too many there and when he showed up to tape the show in the late afternoon he was a bit wasted. It was only that one time. And it was FUNNY. Johnny noticed it and they just went with it and it was hysterical.
Johnny, on the other hand, was a NASTY drunk. Which is one of the main reasons he gave up drinking.
@@retroguy9494 He gave up a wonderful hobby ? What could he replace it with that would be more enjoyable ? 😋😋
@@tracykingston9668 In Johnny's case? Let's see. His beautiful mansion on the beach at Malibu. His yacht. His car collection. I'd take all those over drinking any day! 😁
I remember being sort of awake to watch this live with my parents on the family TV. I was 14 and went back to bed because of school the next day.
This is the first time I have seen it in color instead of black&white. I was surprised about the color of the attendants’ outfits, and then realized it was typical of the time period.
Truly a bizarre moment in TV and pop culture history. And they couldn’t even set up an angle to see their faces?
All we saw was a "rear view"! Pathetic.
I think they did that on purpose, because they were so shy!
They said they did that to prove it was real because tiny Tim didn’t want people to think that it was fake
@@alexiskaczor3510 you are correct!
@@cindyoconnell2471 Shy ? LOL . They allowed it to be filmed and put on the highest watched talk show of that time. They could have got married privately if they wanted. 🤪

I remember watching this live. It was as ridiculously bizarre then as it is today.
I didn't watch it live but I also think that was bizarre!!!

I loved the sweet wording of the vows they recited to each other.

Miss Vicki wasn't old enough to toast her own wedding (17 yrs old)
She was old enough to toast just not old enough to drink alcohol

Crazy, I was thinking the exact same thing. Dressed for a wedding, attitude for a funeral. That was one of the couple most bizarre parts of this wedding for me.
He married a 17 year old child and was known to have an affinity for young girls but there are people in the comments defending him because he’s “strange”. Ugh.
He’s Jewish. Sanhedrin 54b. A few thousand sex offenders a year get moved to Israel with no charges for their Israeli citizenship gained by Jewish heritage.
CHILD? She was literally 3 months shy of turning 18. Guys were going off to fight in Vietnam at her age at that time.
I hope you will take into consideration that only as of recently in world history has it been taboo IN AMERICA for a 17 year old to marry, whereas in many cultures, including many cultures still today, 17 is quite a respectable age to marry. In fact many merry younger than 14. Arbitrarily put the age of adulthood at 18 and now 21... for reasons, does not mean it is inappropriate.

I love Mr Tim. Loved him on Stern.
I've seen Tiny Tim on the Howard Stern Show. And he was always very truthful! The man had a fantastic memory! He could remember dates and times of events and baseball players . What made Tiny Tim unique was his falsetto voice. And his personality he always told the truth. And when he spoke he was interesting.
I remember this. Being a kid, I thought it was a skit. Johnny Carson was the best.
For those of you who are saying he is a predator, in order for a person to be a predator there has to be that intent. You can't claim what was in his heart and mind, however, you can take a look at his history and reputation of countless countless people stating that he was one of the kindest, and most pure hearted men who lived a very clean life. I think some of you may need to grow up a bit, and not cast blind judgments. Those comments say more about who you are, then someone you do not even know but are claiming to know.
Jeffrey Dahmer was considered a "nice" guy by his aquaintances . LOL
I and my mother stayed up to watch it. Unusual because my mother never stayed up past 9:30p.m.
HERE IN CHILE (South America) we had a singer and composer just as "histrionic (exaggerated) as Tiny Tim and his name is Raúl "Florcita Motuda" Alarcón (that is: Raúl "Little flower Bulky" Alarcón) who has later been a representative of the republic from Chile (...I don't know how it came to be... (irony)); "Motuda" also resembles the singer of Freddie & The Dreamers (I'm telling you now) in his acting.
Important songs by Florcita Motuda (see live on OTI, Festival de Viña or TV programs): "Pobrecito Mortal", "Final de Siglo", "Brevemente... gente", "Tírale un ajo", etc. (note: he sings in Spanish (our native language).

Didn’t know he got married. Milk and honey.. never tasted that together but I’m sure it was good together. This was such a sweet wedding to watch. Guess I’m gonna need to read up on them both. Vows taken together should be said before God, family and friends. They did just that!

Ed’s favorite drink. Alcohol. 😵💫😳🙄🥴🤣
You know that was just a joke right? I mean, sure, he drank cocktails socially. But in reality it was JOHNNY who had the drinking problem.
@@retroguy9494 Very true. I read Johnny's bio, and his alcoholism wasn't much of a secret. Still miss him, though!
@@stellarocquie7957 True. And he was really nasty and violent when he drank too. Which, by his own admission, was the main reason he gave it up.
@@retroguy9494In reality they BOTH had alcohol problems. Try not to rewrite history.
@@DoctorShocktor I am NOT 'rewriting' history. As I said, Ed drank socially and sure, one in a while he had one too many. But he was NOT the nasty and violent drink that Johnny was which is why Johnny eventually quit drinking altogether.
It was part of the act.
Beautiful.
This was very sweet of them but it sure is giving me some dark shadows vibes!!! (dresses)😂

Vickie HAD to have needed parental consent to go through with this marriage. With that age difference, i would be surprised, even at the time this took place, if the courts allowed the marriage to go down without parental consent on the bride's part. Only to have had a child together and divorce having only been married about 8 years total. She was so young to have have taken on the responsibility of a marriage.
Man, I’m glad I watched something else on TV when this aired..How can a grown man at 37 marry a girl that was 17? And their parents were OKAY with it?? Wow…

He did a really good album in the o0s where he did covers of songs like “stairway to heaven”, etc. it is really good and funny.

Times, perspectives and laws have changed drastically in that time. And yes, LEGALLY, 17, like it or not, is still considered to be a child. Educate yourself before you make such incorrect, uninformed statements. And get some anger management counseling to help control your ranting and outbursts.
@@stellarocquie7957 How can you call that rape. She literally said "yes". And married or not, if she doesn't want to have sex with her husband, she still can say no at any time. If he still proceeds, THAT would be rape, but how do you want to know if that was the case here. And I don't know about U.S. laws (yes, I'm uneducated) but in Europe a 17-year old is not a child and I don't think it is wise to treat them as one. Humans don't switch from "completely not being able to make decisions" to "fully independent, no one decides for me" in one day. Give them more and more responsibilities over years. -- I don't know where you see outbursts and rantings. Maybe it's the way you read my comments?
Her parents gave consent so it was all legal. No statutory rape here.
That last song was unbelievable. People can judge it now as something not so good probably but it's from another time. Also, it's not only sung from his heart, it's from his soul, he truly was a gift from above...
