So I've been away for a while and missed quite bit of Film Riot. This Justin guy at first I was like "who the fu*k?" and then I laughed my ass off - best addition to the on screen crew ever.
Josh seemed to be gearing up for a career in front of the camera, bulking up, invisible braces, being in most of the skits on the show etc. We really only hear him now compared to years ago and the new guy seems to be taking his place in front of the camera. Certainly adding Justin to the Film Riot family has added value with his on set experience and it's shown since he's joined. I guess my question is... has Josh's abilities behind the scenes and your trust in him switched his focus in the film industry? It's certainly a complement either way knowing your professionalism on the projects you do. You have two great actors at your disposal in Josh and Emily and I always enjoy when they appear in the shorts/skits. Also I just discovered after many years of following you that we have the same birthday!
+Salvation73 Josh is doing a lot of behind the camera work these days. He's been directing and editing all the episodes. He'll be in more very soon as well - just a lot of projects at once. :)
Can't wait, thanks for the reply. I've followed you all since the beginning and look forward to your continued success. I'm going to attend your directorial debut of a feature film, not a wish but something I know. I used to watch Dan Trachtenberg on his RUclips channel and recently saw his first film. Talent finds a course, you're close Film Riot... closer than you know.
Juan Ayala Welcome to film riot, the show that takes the mysteries from techniques that go into some of your most favorite Hollywood films. I’m your host Ryan Connolly. ;)
I love Crocs. I have two pair. A traditional clog, and a leather upper tennis shoe version. They also make boots and running shoes now. So, get the super comfortable Croc soles with the non-Croc look.
Man. Justin has really breathed life into this show again. He's obviously very involved in the show and it's content lately has been freaking FANTASTIC. A new perspective has for sure helped improve the show. MORE PLEASE!
Never really thought about this aspect. The fist time I was on a "real" set, it was pouring/hailing out and I didn't even own a rain coat or boots (it was also incredibly muddy on location). Luckily one of the wardrobe ladies pitied me and offered me some rain gear for the day. (What an angel right?) Learned my lesson after that!
I also always have a script/shotlist on A5, a pen, a white board marker, permanent marker, pink marker and a small roll of gaffer... Because you know, others don't... Long story short; I'd probably get rich if I'd ask a dollar when I lend something out on set
personally clothing wise I go with light weight military combat trousers and combat jacket (if the weather is kind then just a shirt) with mid hight combat boots
Was kind of expecting a whole bunch of gear but this was interestingly unexpected. I usually wear black clothing, I have a true Canadian weather tolerance, and I'm used to wearing cheap steel toes so I'm not too worried about my feet on long days so not a lot changes for me but holy crap, when you mentioned the chafing I knew that struggle, so uncomfortable and I didn't know there was a solution, usually I just put up with it for a day and use a bunch of aloe gel when it's done. I'll have to give that a shot for sure
Wear high skate shoes, like those made by Globe, DVS and sometimes DC (Osiris also has a couple). They're big and bulky, but light and comfortable. Your feet will never smell or sweat excessively again.. The only issue is the price, they are incredibly expensive ($80 - $150)
Good points Ryan (and Justin) and thanks for plugging North Face while up here in Vancouver!. A while ago I volunteered for some set work and ended up as a 2nd AC which was fun and I agree with everything Justin carried with him, I'd be curious to see what external 'gear' you have seen. I noticed Justin had that Husky bag which is great but what about while actually filming, what do you use to carry that gear on your person? I've found Tactical Tailor or similar 'military' systems work great for this application. Also while brand name gear (North Face, Columbia, etc...) makes some amazing gear, I have been told that logos, brand names, etc.. is taboo on shoots due to licencing headaches? Truth to this or is this just CYA nonsense? (Cover your...uh....backside) Thanks!
FilmRiot's videos are like these instructions on "how to survive **insert unrealistic situation**" in a generic kids magazine. You will never actually need those tips, but you enjoy watching them.
u guys should see toronto in winter -26 C ... i was wearing layers over layers and the only cameras that works in that weather without a polar bear cover is 5D :D
I always wear Adidas Ultra Boosts when filming, The Boost midsole is like standing on clouds and I can stand for a whole day and would not feel anything. 10/10, would recomend
I feel like there are a couple things you could have mentioned - granted you don't seem to have any on-air females, but there are definitely differences in some areas between being a male and female on set in terms of what we need to wear. It's pretty common for green ladies on set to forget to wear a belt, or worse wear leggings, that when a walkie is hooked on, well, I've seen a few more 'whale tails' that I would have liked to.
Hi Ryan, +film riot I love your work and really enjoy the way you guys doing film riot (with humour and serious work at the same time). I learned a lot watching your videos. Can you help me out with the tricks I can use for the light setup on chroma so that i dont get the reflections of porta umbrella/light setup in the glasses/spectacles of the character. Is it possible that i get descent lighting on the face and body and at the same time get rid of the kinda green reflections of light setup on the glasses?
I hope the international ships come back soon! I´m from México City and wanted to make a t-shirt order, by the way: great channel! I study filmmaking here in México and love to watch your videos, have learn a bunch since i subscribe few years. Keep going!
Who on the production team went to Baldwin Wallace College (University now)? The hat that Justin is wearing at 3:51 is from that college. I go there now!!
Don't take this the wrong way (unless you want to) but I really enjoy the show NOW. I mean it was nice before but I think I speak for everyone when I say the production value has gone up a lot. Worth the wait :)
It would be AWESOME if you upload updated videos of your first videos. Like the tips and Film and cinematography apps for iPhone and Android. SOOO PLEASE DO ONE! I'M ANTICIPATING ONE! 😭😭😭 Just please do it!
So I've been away for a while and missed quite bit of Film Riot. This Justin guy at first I was like "who the fu*k?" and then I laughed my ass off - best addition to the on screen crew ever.
Welcome back.
I don't know if i come here to learn about film making or for the comedy
why not both :)
+IIcowdudeII ooh don't get me wrong I do both
hahahaha :)

+SidDaKid III come for the veggies and stay for the candy.

For me it's a wish.... if I can't anyfilm he makes I'll be in theaters the second it comes out ... or even a film josh is in, now that would be cool
HAHAHAHA who else heard Ryan (or someone) laugh at 8:43 😂😂😂😂
Well this is where you hanging at.. I feel you bro
I heard a little squeak
"Which shoes you choose when you shoot."
TONGUE TWISTER
I adore Jack! Can we keep him?
I mean permanently on the show.
Can we also keep Justin?
Like for the show?
Yes.
I don't think I've ever understood the intro before "I'm Ryan Connoly" lol
Juan Ayala Welcome to film riot, the show that takes the mysteries from techniques that go into some of your most favorite Hollywood films. I’m your host Ryan Connolly. ;)
If ever the "MicroMachines" toys come back...Ryan should be their VO guy.
As soon as I saw that Boogie Fever... It was a nice reminder that Film Riot is back at top notch quality :)
I love Crocs. I have two pair. A traditional clog, and a leather upper tennis shoe version. They also make boots and running shoes now. So, get the super comfortable Croc soles with the non-Croc look.

Can we get a tutorial for the all the retro sequences used in the video? (3:49)

Learned my lesson after that!
That In Bruges Refrence at the end! Gold!
Lovin the 70's and 80's themed transitions :)
I also always have a script/shotlist on A5, a pen, a white board marker, permanent marker, pink marker and a small roll of gaffer...

+Wellshot Definitely. Great tips there!
Loved the retro stuff!
personally clothing wise I go with light weight military combat trousers and combat jacket (if the weather is kind then just a shirt) with mid hight combat boots
Great tips guys, new production BTS stills looks awesome!
The union's coming part with the pocket knife had me dying! haha
I friggin love the content! Also, the boogie segment was epic!
diy stuff were ur best episodes !
"He rubs this on it......or *me* if he really asks me to"
😂😂😂😂
Omg!!!!! Justin is hilarious 😂 😂 😂 glad he's part of the crew hahaha
this video was a great idea. its something not everyone would think of immediately when related to filmmaking.
I see you Film Riot, with that same pattern from the carpet in The Shining... ;-)
+Nathan Leon :)
I WAS JUST ABOUT TO COMMENT THAT!! I love that movie!
Was kind of expecting a whole bunch of gear but this was interestingly

Holy shit Justin had me dying at my desk at work.....people down the hall are looking at me funny.....LMAO
Not a film maker, been subscribed since the first teleportation episode, Cuz i just love you guys, keep it up
Sketchers with the memory foam insoles do me well when I am on my feet all day, all week at work.
Wear high skate shoes, like those made by Globe, DVS and sometimes DC (Osiris also has a couple). They're big and bulky, but light and comfortable. Your feet will never smell or sweat excessively again..
The only issue is the price, they are incredibly expensive ($80 - $150)
A++ for the Full House bunny wallpaper at the end.
I totally second the crocs statement !!!
MAN. I've been having the shoe problem lately. I got the gels tip a few weeks ago. need those in soles!
I love Justin
Vaseline works great for outdoor shoots. If you slather your fingers and toes in it and put gloves/socks over them, it'll keep them insulated.
New balance shoes for run and gun! Been wearing this brand the past 10 years!
lol those songs were
"Set for Glory" and "Boogie Fever" by Richard Myhill.
Do an episode on equipments, accessories, etc. when filming (especially sync sound/live sound recording)
Love your work!
Is the boogie song background the carpet from the Overlook Hotel in The Shining?

This episode was too funny 70s disco music OMG!!!!
Kubricks' phallic carpet from "The Shining" as a backdrop. nice.
The "goodies" segment felt like a skit from rick and morty
FilmRiot's videos are like these instructions on "how to survive **insert unrealistic situation**" in a generic kids magazine. You will never actually need those tips, but you enjoy watching them.
Great tips guys! I'll have to get a pair of neos
yup, pattern was from the hotel in the shining
u guys should see toronto in winter -26 C ... i was wearing layers over layers and the only cameras that works in that weather without a polar bear cover is 5D :D
How did you guys slowly over time get all of these goodies for film making?
I think the answers in the question
Slowly over time.
Sry I meant from where did you guys get the money needed
Slowly is the key word there.
(Plus they have connections and sponsors)
ok that last part is what i needed thanks
got that overlook carpet background
A nice add on is to have a roll of TP in your in your car. Instead of baby powder i would go with chassis for men powder.
Will international shipping be available when it comes back online next year?
Once you guys switch to the new shipping system, will there be international shipping? Really want some goodies, but I'm in Europe. Thanks.
I need mine in canada
+MofaGames That's what we are hoping for.
Film Riot Thanks, hope that will work out. Keep up the great work.
"What's that? The union's coming?" *stab *stab
This was the funniest video I have seen in a while! Keep up the good work!
Can you guys make a video about how to make your video look 70's/80s ?
They have. It's on their channel somewhere on getting that VHS look. Can't remember the name but it was funny. Just look it up
Yeah!
Ernesto Aguirre really thanks! I'll go searching for it then thanks :)
www.redgiant.com/universe/
How much preparation/experience/networking does it take to get your first job on set of a big feature?
LMAO @ the boogie fever dance. Great one again guys!
What about duct, medical and electrical tape? Life savers for quick repairs or handiwork.
How did you do the awesome 80's style effects?
they have a video on it already
what video?
Mind telling me the name of it? cheers, very interested myself!
look up "VHS Look & Free Stock Images" on the film riot search :)
There's a cool VHS effect part of Red Giant Universe suite.
I always wear Adidas Ultra Boosts when filming, The Boost midsole is like standing on clouds and I can stand for a whole day and would not feel anything. 10/10, would recomend
For shoes, try Adidas boosts, or on the cheaper end, get Adidas cloudforms
I'm always a fan of a good pair of work boots with a heel.
I love the 80s look on the transitions haha
I was just listing to Boogie Fever on my tv!
I too love getting my shirts at Target.
That "boggie fever" song is catchy AF! :D
table top part for the win
What happened to Intercept?
it got
Intercepted
+
Ha
Dig the shirt!
Your techniques are wonderful.
(Especially the marketing part ;) )
This was clever and informative as per usual, but the Justin spots were just amazingly hilarious. Well done guys :D Bravo!
I need more videos like this one :D

Gotta love the anti-union blade.
I love you guys.
Great!
Anyone Wondering, song is Richard Myhill - Boogie Fever
Thanks Justin! I feel better now:)
I hope the international ships come back soon! I´m from México City and wanted to make a t-shirt order, by the way: great channel! I study filmmaking here in México and love to watch your videos, have learn a bunch since i subscribe few years. Keep going!
Hey rygy love the channel. Can you show us how to make a person levitate in air with our hand. Like the force kinda thing
Who on the production team went to Baldwin Wallace College (University now)? The hat that Justin is wearing at 3:51 is from that college. I go there now!!
So much truth.
I love this vid lol and Amen to the chafing!!! I've had that happen so many times on set it is never addressed enough lol. Gold bond or baby powder
Dang, I was gonna treat myself to a jacket for the December holidays!
yay!!!! Full House Bunnies!!!!
1:17 Back from silent era! :D
8:20 Absolute fucking gold. Laughed so hard :D Go Justin!
Don't take this the wrong way (unless you want to) but I really enjoy the show NOW. I mean it was nice before but I think I speak for everyone when I say the production value has gone up a lot. Worth the wait :)
As a sound guy, may I add, make sure your shoes don't squeak. Or at the very least, be willing/able to take them off if the sound guy asks.
Try skater shoes. They are made to last be elastic and comfortable. Ex: Globe shoes.
Pants time with Justin reminds me of the fake ads in Rick & Morty
anyone else notice the shining carpet background?
yep. i wouldn't have tho if i didn't watch room 237 cuz they talking about the carpet in detail
love the justin sections hahaha
How come the background for the boogie fever shots were the carpet from the shining??
The Justin segment felt like something from the intergalactic cable episodes from Rick and Morty.
It would be AWESOME if you upload updated videos of your first videos. Like the tips and Film and cinematography apps for iPhone and Android. SOOO PLEASE DO ONE! I'M ANTICIPATING ONE! 😭😭😭 Just please do it!
good shit ..... thank you.....so much....
I actually like this video, this is something I never would have thought about, and it was pretty funny too
