That was sick, never expected to see these two in a drum battle in that kind of setting! For me Billy took the win here, but I'm a big Portnoy fan as well. Fun little fact, at 10:08 Billy plays a groove from the song "6:00" by Dream Theater starting with that fill.
Wow. Great info Nikola!
Week late, but just getting ready to post that. Of course someone would have already said it. Also, Billy killed it here.
Also caught that the first listen. Had to rewind to enjoy it again!
I went to the same HS as Rymer (and I think two founding members of Dream Theater were from the same town too) and he would literally use every spare minute he had to practice. He would just have his drum pad with him at all times, drilling in the cafeteria at lunch and such.
RYMER EATS PORTNOY.
Legendary video. Portnoy got his ass kicked but no shame in it going up against the likes of Rymer. One guy played everything from the heart with soul, passion, fury and groove not to mention impeccable finesse and precision. The other guy is Mike Portnoy. You spoke of "space" and I heard a flurry of flat noted quads peppered around the kit. Hi hat accents almost given up on. Tired from the get go and once he saw (heard) what was coming his way, he knew it was over, hence him crashing his cymbals a little faster...more white noise to drown out the impending ass kicking. Mike is good drummer but Rymer has bounce in his step. He'll take the linear triplet concepts and incorporate them into his piece. He has a drumeo vid where he expounds upon ideas like here where he is going right hand crash dropped to right floor tom in the triplet pattern closed out with the kick as he accents between around the kit with his left.
Thanks for the input Toby!!!
As a drummer I find this sooooo amazing to watch. I’ve seen this clip a million times and full disclosure I’m a massive Dillinger and billy Rymer fan. His ability to not only perfectly replicate Chris penne and Gil sharone’s parts from previous records but to also to work with Ben and co to write arguably the most amazing songs of the DEP catalogue is awesome. Even more impressive I’m pretty sure he was only 30 at the time he joined the band. He must have been stoked to even be on the same stage a mike portnoy let alone hold his own and get that respect from one of the greatest metal/prog drummers in the game. Billy is an amazing drummer and a super down to earth dude, plus he once said “I’ve done 4 shows with barely any sleep and my kit got set on fire twice…” awesome reaction man x
"Matt Halpern Performs “Lune”, from Periphery III: Select Difficulty" - I think you're gonna like it. Really shows that Matt puts his entire soul into his performances.
Second this, also garden in the bones is a super fun playthrough as well
I'm sure I'll get to Matt soon!!!
Just focussed on Patreon picks at the mo. But we'll get there!
The Bad Thing and Psychosphere drum playthrough videos got me into Periphery. They've been my favorite band now for the last few years
Local drummer here in the USA. I love your channel and your drop in memes and gifs are off the chain hilarious. Keep up the great work. You have a follower for life!
Much appreciated Jeromy!
No one gonna mention how Billy threw Portnoy's own groove back at him at 10:08?
HAHA! Monster
Well spotted too!!!
Never enjoyed a Portnoy solo. Billy for me, chops, groove, everything.
GREAT!
I agree. Portnoy definitely shines in arrangements
Please do a video on Marco minneman he is ridiculous
Look forward to getting to him Scott!
Hopefully a patron picks him as I'm behind on patron picks!
Yes!! Loved Billy playing Portnoy's intro in 6:00 (6 o'clock). Awesome instant homage!
Rymer destroyed conventional. Metal vs jazz
Have you seen the mini series dream theater did about them auditioning drummers after portnoy left? Well worth checking out.
No I've heard a heap about it so I feel like I have!
Need to check it out
@@AndrewRooneyDrums part 1 link ruclips.net/video/DZ3DMDxdpfM/видео.html
I heard hints of Buddy Rich from Billy there during that single stroke roll and cymbal hits after. Nice!
Yup Benny!
Portnoy sound like he has a million ideas all trying to come out at the same time. He’s dope but Billy seemed to stick to a groove a little longer
Yes Billy far more groove oriented Kaleb!
Hi , I would like to know if you know the drumming of Christian Vander from the band Magma?
I don't.... I think it's been requested a few times though....
the difference of level btw this 2 generation of drummer is crazy . off course MP is great drummer, legend etc..but Billy is far away more technical
George Kollias - Shall Rise Shall be Dead ... I'd love to see your reaction to this insane drumming
Thanks George!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums definitely check out George kollias from Nile he a Beast of a drummer
Billy Rymer won.
Please react to some Agent Fresco - their drummer Keli is amazing at polyrhythms and makes amazing, complex grooves.
Dude. I just discovered your channel and I love it. I know it's all in good fun but let's be serious, Rymer demolishes Portnoy. Thanks and keep up the good work!
Billy destroyed that. He even playfully toyed with Mike. Billy clearly respected him though.
If you know Billy, you know this is no where near his best. I’d imagine Billy warming up at home is better than this.
Billy should have went full on and just laid it all out there and destroyed him.
Mike Portnoy, Extreme Theatre. Indeed.
Let’s just polite and honest here....Billy basically said....here is your shit, now leave the house. And take your trash bags with you.
Had seen that. On this particular occasion, I give the edge to Billy. To me, he's more "new school". Groove, chops, speed. Not to say Portnoy doesn't, but.. It's different.
Different strokes Julien :)
Really enjoyed this!
Nobody in drum fight wants to see Alex Rudinger He’ll hit you with a linear feel that will knock you the fuck out
Two very cool guys. Would’ve been awesome to see that live!!!!!!
Yup they seem very humble :)
MATT HALPERN - Drummer of Periphery, and the master of ghost nores. Check out the drumcam videos on ”Marigold” or ”Garden in the Bones”!!
Thank you!
Both great dudes from Long Island, NY this was done at a local venue in Amityville
Oh right on!
Bro, you should go to search a duet between Mike Portnoy and Terry Bozzio! It will drop your jaw.
Sounds great!
All about entertainment for me. MP all day.
Thanks for doing my request, glad you enjoyed it. I thought it might be fun to see something a bit different for a change, and I don't think any of the other drum-reacters out there have done a video on this. Now let's see if some of the other patreons can get you to check out Elliot Hoffman!
EXCELLENT pick!!!
Look forward to the next one :)
Blake Richardson solo at namm
Very cool🤩 never heard of a drum battle before but I like I like! Thanks for doing this reaction and Thanks to the patreon who suggested this👍
Good fun isn't it!?
You should react to Trivium - "The Sin and the Sentence" (Drum Cut), Triviums drummer is just insane!
Thanks Janosch!
Yeah Billy won that.
Seems unanimous!
and it wasn't even close...
I just watched this drum fight 2 weeks ago, so suprised and happy to see it here. Cheers from Austria.
YESSSS!!!
portnoy got bodied
"billy!... holy sh!t.."
Gavin Harrison with Simon Phillips is pretty unbelievable too...
The person filming it doesn't have a clue when they start trading ...
Is it the right time to recommend Clown Core "Earth"?
Hey Albert! Sure!
MATT HALPERN - Drummer of Periphery, and the master of ghost nores. Check out the drumcam videos on ”Marigold” or ”Garden in the Bones”!!
Thank you!
Not a "Drum Fight", but another great matchup is Gavin Harrison and Simon Phillips. ruclips.net/video/6ZY8raPkDys/видео.html Simon looks like a hobbit behind that kit... and Gavin accidentally clipped a rim once. You don't see that every day.
Sounds amazing. Thank you!!!
just found out about someone almost completely off the radar...came across him through luck it seems...if you're hungry for more then check the following vid: Don Caballero Live at Mac's Bar, East Lansing, MI 6/21/2006
An amazing drummer and the music is pretty special too! Take care all :)
Thanks for that!
I'd love to see you check out Steve Judd by reacting to Karnivool - Change (Parts 1 & 2) (Live) Moshcam. Also, how about a reaction to Anika Nilles - Alter Ego, to show some love for the many ladies who belong on stage right next to the guys us regular drummers usually talk about when we discuss the GOATs.
Hey! Steve is from NZ!
You have to check out Chris Colman where his lit up in green
Mike wasn't made for pure solos. He's more like Neil Peart (though you can argue that NP has a lot more in his sleeve RIP).
Andrew, try looking into Jason Rullo from Symphony X. :)
Yo thanks for the recommend!!!
Maybe Mark was being gracious as the elder statesman, but Billy sort of ate his lunch a little bit.
Mike*
@@WinedandDined27 Not Mike....was Billy :)
@@alexfreakdaxer927 huh?
@@WinedandDined27 Yeahh... Billy Rymer forever!!!
@@alexfreakdaxer927 I don’t know what you’re talking about. Why are you mentioning Billy? I was just correcting the OP who called Mike Portnoy “Mark”.
fantastic patreon pick!
It really is!
could you check out " zackgrooves just playin drum " its a short video, he use to play jazz, he has 4 brains and so much technique, i think you would love it :)
Thanks Gabin!
Please do Lamb of God
Desolation Please
Or should I say can u do Chris Adler his drum skills🔥🔥🔥
I've heard he is a beast!
Drum fight 9 > South Park dance battle.
That was intense to say the least !! 😂
Good fun hey Nathan!
Billy killed da game
There is me thinking this would be a reaction video of MP and BR using drums as weapons in a cage. No music just last man standing drum weaponised brawl.
I'd take in cymbals and sticks...
Literal drummer fights!
That's be something HAHA
Greetings from Mexico, still waiting for the St. Merat reaction, tho it wouldn't be a "real" one since you already know the guy, but his drumming is so out of the norm it deserves a close observation such the one you can give and feed it with your input.
Cheers!
I'll get there when Patreon picks are under control!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums its great to know you are doing good on patreon mate. Cheers!
You need to see trym of emperor, he has drum cam for the song "ya entrancempirium"
Thank you!
Two amazing drummers, but they are out. Sebastian Lanser is In :)
You got it Bruce!
Thank youI, imagine your face when you see my drums performance. omg i must mor training. :)

Thanks Sebastian!
You need to watch honor thy father dream theatre drum cam
Thanks Quinn!
React to Insect Warfare .. please?
Thanks Jesus!
Portnoy is a master of writing and playing drum parts but I've never seen him do a decent solo. Not for someone with his ability. I don't like solo's anyway. Billy for me on this. So many drummers get hung up on throwing everything at a solo rather than playing an impressive drum piece that flows from one section to the next. Most solo's sound like a drum kit being thrown down the stairs.
GREAT RUclips handle BTW!!!
I'm not a big solo guy either....
Hes a rocker. Rock drummers are musical writers. Not vocabulary shredders.
Does Billy have a lot of jazz training?
I think you can answer that question for yourself, haha.
@@WinedandDined27 Yes, Billy is pure jazz.
Like Neil Peart said: no 2 drummers are alike.
Everyones got their unique finger print!
What it comes down to, imo, is that if I ever were to write an album and needed a drummer, Portnoy would be my number 1 pick. Couldn't care less about solos, it's the creativity in his drumming and how it takes the songs to another level that matters to me.
Nice one Carlos!
Absolutely agree
GODSMACK battle of drums, you've gotta do it.
Sounds awesome :)
This video is 13 minutes long, it got interrupted 4 times (!) by advertising. Honestly RUclips wtf are you doing? It is unbearable.
Besides that cool reaction. I love this drum battle. Both are great drummers, my preference goes to Billy because he displayed more groove and a lot of dynamics, also his style is a more unusual and that's what Metal needs to evolve.
Mike Portnoy obviously is an amazing drummer but his chops were too "classic", it sounds like any other Metal drum solo, even though really well executed and technically mindblowing.
Sorry for the ad breaks!!! Glad you dug otherwise :)
Pretty boring, tbh. I've never really been a massive fan of drum solos. Even the ones that are supposed to be legendary (Bonzo, Peart, Weckl, etc) put me to sleep, most of the time.
Impressive? Yes... at first. Feels like a circus act in my opinion. I'm much more interested in seeing a drummer (the entire band, actually) coming up with tight songwriting where the musicians can display their chops while creating music that will tickle your soul, not just overwhelm your brain. Music isn't a sport. Playing ability should extend your vocabulary so you can better express yourself as an artist, not become a slave to pointless noodling. IMO.
Andrew, I know you're busy with the patreon picks, but if you start feeling overwhelmed with hyper technical metal monsters (you mentioned twice already you're starting to become desensitized) maybe do something more traditional, something more your alley where you can actually analyze more and give more feedback on what's going on. Maybe stuff like Red Hot, some classic heavy metal like Iron Maiden, maybe pop/rock/metal(ish) stuff like Ghost (great band btw). Just so you don't get burned out! And then react to Jamie for Heaven's sake!!
I've never been a solos guy either Vivaldo :)
That’s fair, but I think you were more describing what musicianship should be to YOU, versus what it should be in general. There is no “should” in art. As long as it’s expressing whatever the artist is trying to convey, it’s effective and doing what it “should” do (haha).
There is, of course, objectivity in art, but for the sake of argument art across any realm is inherently subjective.
That said, I do tend to share your preference of a tight groove, riff, etc. vs what I call ‘instrument gymnastics’. They all have their place, which is why, generally, a solo only makes up a small section of a song, and the riffs, grooves, and progressions make up the rest. It would seem the rest of the world agrees with us, seeing as the popular artists are the ones who lean into those types of song structures, whereas the Yngwie Malmsteen’s or the Polyphia’s or Between the Buried and Me’s stay more or less underground and/or esoteric; because that style of music only appeals to a small demographic, most of whom are generally musicians themselves who can appreciate technique and chops. The usual, common, non trained ear will find less complicated, more rhythmic, melodic, groovy and catchy stuff to be far more appealing.
I suppose I say this only to caution you from claiming how things “should” be, especially regarding things as arbitrary as art. You’ll be wrong every time, because there is no “should”. That’s the beauty of art and music, you can get whatever you want out of it. Some folks love the challenge and discipline involved with becoming technically proficient, and that’s what it “should” do for those folks. Some just want to learn a few guitar chords to play around the campfire, and that’s what it “should” do for those folks, too. Music is for everyone.
these things are kind of silly as we know. Mike is playing on a simple kit and in reality is a UNIVERSE above the kid in talent and absolute mastery of his craft . the kid just simply bangs on the drums.
“The kid” lmao have some respect man. Nobody here is calling Portnoy the old boomer. Rymer is a monster and guaranteed could kill and DT song in the catalogue. I’m not sure J could say the same about the old boomer and any Dillinger song in the catalogue. DT and Portnoy did amazing things for prog and music as a whole, but to be so dismissive is unfair to the new generation of musicians and to yourself. Rymer is a force of nature just the same as Portnoy and this doesn’t need to be a pissing contest.
@@brysonrichey6707 LOLOL.. geez calm down there Bryster.. All your ranting doesnt make you correct... Think ANYTHING you would like to think. I will KNOW what i KNOW!! and anyone younger than me by 20 years is a kid. So GET the FK over that one like quick. haha
@@brysonrichey6707 ahahahahahahaha you are out of your mind.. i just decided to watch 'When I Lost My Bet' and AGAIN all he does is BANG on either a snare or a tom.. No melodic drumming, no intelligence.. consider the band.. an absolute garbage band, with way less than mediocre songwriting... wow unbelievable... DEP sucks huge! and NEW generation of musicians.. uhh like shinedown??? who are in their 20s?? and go play live with (ADMITTED) BACKING tracks to help them out on in live concerts.. you like THEM?? pathetic... your new gen of bands and musicians are so average at best it is not funny..
try this one Bry....Buddy Rich's Incredible Tonight Show Drum Solos on youtube to see what a guy with just a few drums can do against your amazing NEW musicians as you put it..
@@chrisbarnhart7944 you are so bitter it’s hilarious. You tell me I’m ranting, yet you feel the need to respond three times, even after I gave credit where credit is due. I love Portnoy and DT. Sad that you’re in your mid 40’s at LEAST by your own admission and still argue like a petulant brat. Buddy Rich would be ashamed lmao
I do love Portnoy a lot, don't get me wrong, but Rymer makes him kinda look like an old-school 1980 drum teacher on this video (and there's nothing wrong with that).
Old master vs young prodigy
