I really loved Norm MacDonald...it was the first time I ever cried when a celebrity died. I used to listen to him every morning on the train to work. I wish I had a chance to meet him ❤
I was lucky enough to get to meet him once. I went to a taping of his short-lived TV show called "Sports Show with Norm Macdonald" back in the day. As with any taped show, there are many pauses in filming for one reason or another, and on some of the more lengthy filming breaks that Norm wasn't personally involved with, he would invite random people from the audience to come up and put with him on his little putting green that he had right in front of his desk on the set. I was one of the lucky putters on the day that I went. My meeting with him was very brief, but I at least got to tell him how big of a fan of his comedy I've always been. He was very humble and appreciated my comment, and made sure to have a few quick words with everyone he invited on stage. That's my "I met Norm one time!" story. I will certainly never forget it :)
I'm a Mexican from a different generation than his. I was nowhere near knowing him, but I watched every piece of video and audio of him that I could find on the internet. I'm not particularly sensitive, but the day he died, I cried inconsolably, and I cried a few more times throughout that week. To this day, his final appearance on Letterman still makes me cry.
I saw Norm live, he was great for an hour but then he just rambled on forever, no real jokes or anything. He must've done close to 3 hours. We all just sat there and took it to the face. I had to piss so bad but I didn't want to miss anything. I think he knew we all had to piss and was trying to make us piss our pants, that was probably the real joke. RIP Norm, shine on you crazy diamond

I like Jeselnik and appreciate his admiration of Norm. However, it depends very much on the type of battle he was fighting with Normie and what his motivations were. I can imagine at the time - young and trying to prove himself - that Anthony was maybe not picking the right battles for the right reasons but that’s just an assumption.
I don't know Norm personally, but from what I've seen I get the feeling like he respected people who don't back down from what they believe way more than someone who would just kiss his ass because he was an idol of theirs. He may have even found whatever disagreements he and Jeselnik had to be annoying, but kowtowing and being spineless was probably less of a likeable trait.
So in the end they are both right - they did have genuine philosophical differences, and as you say Norm never took Jeselnik serioulsy and trolled the entire time.
