In the begining of the trailer, If you pay more attention to that wall, you will find one more interesting thing besides lion demon, elephant demon and hawk demon. on the mural, look closely to the upper left corner of the hawk demon, there is a Buddha sitting quietly there watiching 3 demons slaughter the people and rob babies away from their parents. why he did not save those people? Because, he's the master of those 3 demons, what they did was his command. In fact, if you read the book "Journey to the West" you will know that most of all demons defeated or killed by monkey king in the book are the pets of Gods and Buddhas. After you finished reading, you'd have a conclusion that Gods and Buddhas are not exactly the way they seem to be, they are not kind, righteous, mercy and compassionate.
The author of the book, Mr Wu used Gods and Buddhas to refer to the nobles, governments and emperors of the ancient Chinese dynasty at that time, evil monsters to refer to those officials and soldiers who attached to the old empires, and those who yearned for freedom and equality, like Monkey King and good demons refer to the people of the lowest rank. He expressed the distortions and deformities of society through this ironic way of writing. Actually, the opinion "the one who got killed in the battle with the six-earred was actually wukong" is agreed by most Chinese teenagers in nowadays. After the battle with the six-eared macaques, Wukong did behave very differently from before. He began to listen to Tang monk and gradually turned towards the Buddha. And, many readers don’t think that Monkey King will give up the pursuit of freedom, because he is the Monkey King, he is the demon who is not afraid of the gods. So, game science created black myth depend on that rumor
But the six eared macacque dropped its disguised once it was forced to revert and wukong killed him the replaced wukong theory has been disproven for a while

Good Analysis ! For the game, I think the main character or protagonist in this trailer is Sun Xiaosheng or 孙小圣, not the real Wukong or Monkey King, the one who blocked his staff is the real Wukong or Monkey King, and for the first part of the game, I am guessing is based on the Post Journey to the West or 后西游记, which is one of the three sequels of " Journey to the West " (the other two are " Continued Journey to the West " and " Journey to the West "). The main plot of the book is that during the reign of Tang Xianzong, the scriptures obtained by Tang Xuanzang were distorted by the greedy monks. The Tathagata sealed the scriptures, and Tang Xuanzang selected scriptures to go to Lingshan to obtain the truth. Tang Xuanzang selected the Dadian monk (Tang Banxu), and gathered Sun Xiaosheng, Zhu Yijie, and novice monks. The four masters and disciples finally arrived at Lingshan to see the Buddha and obtain the true understanding.
The main characters of "Post Journey to the West" are the monk Dadian (Tang Banjing), Sun Xiaosheng, Zhu Yijie, and novice monk. A stone monkey was born on Huaguo Mountain , called Xiaosheng. Sun Xiaosheng and the monk Dadian went to the west to learn the scriptures. On the way, Zhu Yijie and novice monks were taken in one after another. The four Dadian masters and apprentices fell into distress many times, and finally arrived at Lingshan , seeking a real solution
the white bone monster is actually the skeleton demon. She transforms into human being and try to approach to the monk and eat him. She makes 3 attemps but all of them fail because of Sun Wukong. It is a very famous story that every Chinese people know.
Also because Wukong has red demon eyes after being boiled in a pot by heaven in an attempt to remove his x5 or so immortality (making goku look weak in comparison imo) and you can guess this attempt didn't turn out too well cuz he has Demon Vision so he can see the true form of demons always but not Gods so I think there's a limit.
Wu Chengen mentioned the four monkeys in the chaotic world in Chapter 58 of journey to the West.
We generally only know Monkey King and six eared macaque.
The other two are mentioned only a little in the original.
Maybe it's related to the plot. Maybe one of the characters in the game.
The character of control was transformed into a giant white haired blue monkey. Like another chaotic monkey,
it is a super monster hidden in the book.
Of course, this is speculation

Thank you so much for this video and excellent work with the Analysis. I just want to add something I have noticed during the trailer.
In the beginning, the monk said this story started with a golden cicada, and Sun Wukong can turn himself to the golden cicada. In Journey to the West, Tang Seng was actually a reincarnation of Golden Cicada. It means in this game, Sun Wukong somehow takes the place of Tang Seng. It was not the story that Tang Seng traveled the journey to the west and Sun Wukong protect him, but this is the story that Sun Wukong traveled this journey by himself.
About the skill Sun Wukong used to counter enemies attack, you're right that Sun Wukong used to be a stone, but I do not think he turned back to stone to counter attacks. Due to the golden light around him, I believe this is a common skill in Chinese legends called "Jin Shen", which means something like "gold body". According to Journey to the West, the Monkey King ate peaches of heaven, the elixir from Taishang Laojun, and drank the wine from Jade Emperor. It made his skin as hard as gold, and weapons, lighting, fire, water, or poison could not hurt him.
You also mentioned that Wukong can use his hair to clone himself. In fact, every single hair of him can turn to anything he wants, including animals, weapons, items, etc, though Sun Wukong usually choose to colon himself. I understand that many people remembered shadow-colon, but I think they are two exactly different abilities.
For those several stages shown after the boss battle, the first one you thought it was the underworld, I have also seen some other people believed it was the "Leiyin Temple" (or "Thunder Temple"). The second stage, it seems a giant deer ahead, so it probably the white deer Sun Wukong had beaten in the Bhiksu Kingdom. The boss structured by bones might be the White Bone Demon. The boss with the wing and head of a bird looks like Golden Winged Great Peng, also called Dapeng Jinchi Mingwang.
Once again this is a great analysis and I feel it's one of the best I have seen about this game.

@@TheMythologyGuy1 I think in this game, the developers will try to tell a new story, not just restore a story there already was. The staff said they pay attention to the characters the original novel mentioned, image stories behind them, and how they make the world look like.
@@TheMythologyGuy1 I forgot to mention that you are correct about the two characters on the bottom right of the trailer shown the different transformation. They are two Chinese characters, and each means 'ape' and 'wolf'.

Yes that is the theme song from the classic TV show of ‘the journey to the west’. Oh man, that brought up song much memories of my childhood, it literally make me tear up. Sun wukong is the superhero of many Chinese, he just like Superman/Spider-Man to the Americans. I love him since I was a child.

i believe the timeline is actually after the journey to the west has ended because there was a cutscene video and those spiders are not 7 spiders during the journey, the mother however is theories to be one of them, and she is really old.

I think it would be cool if Wukong’s powers in this were kinda like how they handled the spells in Hogwarts Legacy, you have a wide array to choose from but you select 4 specific ones to have quick access to and press a button to activate them, so when you enter different areas you have to think about what ones you may need more than others

Classic Dragon Ball was heavenly based on Journey To The West and DBZ was based on Star Wars and Superman aliens origins

Six eared macaque is one of my favorite fictional charicters. If we are infact playing as him in the game, I would live that too

yes, there is a theory that the one who became buddha is not the real wukong. It is the six ears monkey. The writer who wrote this novel is to represent the situation back in Ming Dynasty. The heaven represented the royal of Ming Dynasty, wukong represented the people who wants to fight the authorities, he has the greatest power in the team he did a lot to protect tang seng but he never gain tang song’s trust. Zhuhai ba jie represent the kind of people who has no principle (such as, they would agree with the authorities no matter it is right or not, Zhu ba jie would agree with wukong when wukong is in the team but when wukong was threw out of the team by Tang seng as tang seng thought wukong out when he did something bad, zhu ba jie would turn his words to wukong), sha seng ( aka sha wu Jin) is represented the king of people who would agree everything others said. and Tang seng represented an ordinary man without any special power but have the authority to lead(Hope I explained it well). Back to the theory, so when it reach to the point that the heaven thought wukong is hard to be controlled, the lord of the heaven asked the Buddha rulaifo’s help to get rid of wukong and have somebody else who is much easier to be controlled. So Rulaifo created the six ears monkey who have the exactly the same abilities as wukong. As we all know, the two monkey kings ended their fights in front of rulaifo. And the one alive killed the one that showed up the ‘fake’ wukong. Not sure if you guys noticed when you read the novel, before the story of two monkey kings happened, wukong did not really get along with tang seng so well, they have conflicts quite a lot (such as the story that they met the white-bone demon), and cause tang seng used the inhibiting magic phrase to wukong as a punishment. There are also a few times that wukong was thrown out by Tang seng, the story of two monkey king also happened after wukong was thrown out. But after the two monkey kings’ story, there were no conflicts between tang seng and wukong. So it was quite an interesting theory and I kinda like it. I think in this game it might used this theory, the one that showed up at the end of the battle is the six ear monkey who was the Buddha, and the one we play is the future life of the real wukong who dead in the story of two monkey kings.
It is pretty long, and I hope I explained it right so you guy could understand what I was saying.
What I think it is, is that this takes place after the journey to the west and the character we see is a reincarnation of a part of wukong that didn't reach nirvana. Hence this last piece of wukong is having to set on this journey to reach nirvana to assimilate back with the original wukong. Which may be why the original wukong showed up and stopped clone wukong from killing as is would be against Buddha and further distance him away from the two coming back together

I just noticed that during the 1st part of the trailer, You're play as what I guess the Six Eared Macaque. And during the 2nd part, during the montage like sequence, You're then playing Wukong.
2:56 when you see the demons on the mural, they actually are gods of Buddhism, for example, the elephant-headed one was Ganesh. we do not know why were these gods were depicted doing bad things, but this game is called black myth so the storytelling must be surprising.

I just heard that the temple place was the one that a monk want to steal Tang Seng’s cassock which was given to him by Guanyin. So the monk set out the fire and it burn down the temple. It is one of the stories in ‘The journey to the west.’ I did not realize this by myself, lol. And also, the earth god said the wukong you played is very similar to somebody, and I believed he meant the monkey king. The earth god call the wukong you play a little monkey. If you are play the monkey king, I don’t think the earth god dare to call the monkey king a little monkey. In addition, the mini boss, the wolf dude with a fire blade said to you ‘another monkey’ (the first monkey he saw must be the monkey king). So this story of the game must happen a way later than the story of ‘the journey to the west.’ So whoever showed up at the end of the main boss battle, he is the monkey king who became the Buddha.
just to correct a tiny mistake of your saying, wukong does not have the ability to store his staff in his ear. Wukong's staff called 如意金箍棒，if we simply translate it in English, it means a golden magical staff that can expand or shrink as you wish. Depend on this special ability, Wukong can shrink the size of the staff into a needle and put it inside his ear when he doesn't fight. And, the reason why he put his weapon in his ear? clearly, putting it in the mouse or nose is not a good choice. Beside, wukong sometime use his weapon to clear ear wax. So, it's not his ability but the ability of his weapon

PS: the Japanese manga and anime Dragon Ball was loosely based on Journey to the West, and many characters, magic weapons, spells and justus in Naruto (e.g. the shadow clone, kagebunsin no justus, the gold and silver brothers, the nine-tails fox Kurama.... ) they were all initially inspired by Journey to the West as well. So please stop judging these game developers and stop saying "Chinese copy everything". however many movies, shows, books, arts(I wouldn't say "copy" but*) were inspired by this novel and had references from the foundation of the world of Chinese traditional mythology.

If this is Sun Wukong at the beginning of the trailer then why is he so old? I don't know a whole lot about journey to the west so correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Sun Wukong super immortal like at least 4 times immortal or something.

Sorry that I made quite a lot comment at the same time. I just want to share another theory of the two monkey kings. This ion talked about the story of two monkey kings are made by Wukong himself. After protect Tang Seng so manly time and Tang Seng still do not trust him and threw him out of the team again. All the emotions exploded so he need a way to express himself. So he make a clone and hit Tang Seng, took away all the packages and get the fake tang seng, fake zhubajie and fake shawujin and wanted to get the Buddhist scriptures himself. (All the demons in the novel, either want to eat the meat of Tang Seng or have problems with the monkey king, if the fake wukong is a demon, why he transform to wukong for just team up for his own journey to the west and did not kill tang seng?). Wukong and the fake one made their fight in front of the Rolaifo, this Buddha is the most powerful of all, if the fake wukong want to get away, he won’t follow the real one to Rulaifo. But he did. After the fake one was captured by Rulaifo in the big bowl. Rulaifo said to wukong that he cant have two intentions (the only intention that he can have is to help Tang Seng get the Buddhist Scriptures). If his have two intentions, he will caused big trouble. Rulaifo then asked wukong go back to Tang seng. Wukong complain about how he was unfairly threat by Tang Seng and he just want the justice from Rulaifo. If you read, wukong only asked other gods, or Guanshiyin to identified which one of them is the real one. He only asked Rulaifo for the justices instead of the real or fake. So I think this is also an interesting theory. But I think this game probably used the one that the real monkey king was replaced by the fake one.

Cheng‘s explanation is not quite right actually，especially saying most Chinese teenagers believe in wukong's death。Many Chinese teenagers nowadays did not read the originate story or quite forget about the plots because Journey to the west is the must-read recommended book when they were in only primary school early years (they read it when they are too young). Back to the original story you can see in the end of 57th chapter，where budda see wukong and the six-eared macaque，he said：汝等俱是一心，且看二心竞斗而来也（You two are actually one soul，but now we got two soul fighting each other ）。This is a hint actually that maybe there is no such thing as six-eared macaque，it's wukong‘s two different mind fighting each other，while wukong killed the one who is rebellion to listen to Tang monk‘s teachment，he actually grown up and find the way of being full heart to the buddish. Since the ending of the story were telling that the budda talled about his knowing of the six-eared macaque so the six-eared macaque is quite panic so he choosed to run ，this is how the gods and budda find out who is the real wukong and how wukong killed six-eared macaque. the saying could change into this：“some of the Chinese teenagers believe in wukong's death”.The truth is the belief of “wukong‘s story’ ends as the story tells” or “two-heart theory” is much more main stream .Journy to the west is not all about rebellions and complains to the fate，it's also about how people grow their own belief and how to adapt themselves into the sociaty，it's a very complex chinese culture bassed ancient story with so many things you could discuss. Sadly chinese culture and history is much too different in many ways from western culture ，sometimes It's really hard for chinese story to be fully understand by western people，but I am really glad to see so many people are interested in and discuss about it.
