- Join Chris Grainger, CEO of IWC, and Wei Koh, Founder of Revolution, as they discuss the latest by IWC. At Watches and Wonders 2023, IWC shines the spotlight on the new Ingenieur. Originally designed by the late great Gérald Genta in 1976, this 40mm amagnetic timepiece is available this year with black, silver or aqua dial on its steel version and with grey dial for its titanium version. True to the original IWC Ingenieur of 1976, the 2023 iteration sports classic design details and is powered by the IWX 32111 movement. This movement has an automatic pawl winding system and packs a 120-hour power reserve.

Got to love the IWC Ingenieur titanium… it’s absolutely perfection…stunning piece
Agree with KeepingWatchUK. I’ve said it elsewhere and will say it again - Wei’s interviews are some of the best around. He’s animated, articulate, engaging, and brings out the best in guests (often who are not native English speakers). Great job!
Everyone is talking about the price being too high. How many times do you need to be told that this is a Genta design, it’s an incredible value and hopefully sees limited production to protect the investment for all those who do decide to purchase. It’s an incredible movement, 120 hrs is enormous and why do they need to put anything different in there? Lastly, the crown guards are an essential modern touch for a well rounded sports watch in the 21st century. Those complaining about the price just want to cash in on the hype without paying for it. Sure it’s not cheap but if it was $20k it wouldn’t be on your radar anyway and still be justified, you’re mad because it’s just slightly out of reach for you. Everyone and their mother has a Rolex and are no longer exclusive, this right here is for those who can buy the Rolex but chose not too. They made a conscious decision to buy the IWC because they know it’s different and will be noticed by those whose opinion is valuable. Not just every dude who knows a Rolex, which is everyone. Truly a timeless classic piece from IWC.
Well said!
I would say it’s the best Genta designed watch. I was never a fan of the Nautilus or RO, but the Ingenuir is the first watch that uses that design language that actually resonates with me.
Within the luxury segment, there are other considerations in pricing strategies than asking just a fair price for the specs. And that is fine. But it is also fair if people are disappointed that for the watch you are getting, the price seems to be set relatively high. This seems to be the overall consensus. And it is not because people are ignorant and lack your insight. It is because the price IS fairly high. Plain and simple. People are allowed to point that out, and if anything people are typically even pretty quiet about the price creep in the luxury watch segment overall.
Well, you can say the same about the RO or Nautilus…that’s is overpriced and so on … The new IWC Ingenieur finishing is top notch… it’s a beautiful classic and contemporary piece… it goes back to the Genta roots . The bracelet ergonomics is simply perfection and don’t need any adjustments. There is only 3 OG Genta design … the RO , Nautilus and the IWC Ingenieur… and to me, the IWC is the most beautiful design. If you can get the Titanium … that would be my pick over any existing watch at the moment
I think it's to expensive as well, it's not a in-house movement, it's a Val Fleurier movement based on the ETA 2836 movement, you can buy a Cartier Santos with the same movement for under $10.000, or for the same price as the IWC you can buy a Vacheron Constantin Fiftysix!
Aqua dial is nice but I agree price is too high. Secondary market will likely be less than retail
The 3 hands 56 from Vacheron also has a Valfleurier movement if I am not mistaking, VC only works on the finishing
@@vincentschneuwly9783 Yes, same Val Fleurier movement, but very nice finishing from VC!
@@DrAdd1999 I do agree, below 10K it would have been a terrific bargain, now if like most IWCs you can get them at some point on the grey market unworn with a 20% or more discount I might pull the trigger
I'll take the Vacheron Constantin Fiftysix over this IWC.😁
Wei killing these interviews. Thank you for the content! These pieces are class, albeit a tad expensive…
I am ready to pre order one. it will be my second IWC
Imagine it without the crown guards
I think the price is a bit high considering its predecessor's price and the fact that IWC mucked around with the design before bringing it back to its original design, clouding its lineage. But for anyone who buys one and keeps it long term, the value will be there. It’s a Genta design and if values drop a bit, they will come up.
Theses people are sick!
Double the price in comprasion to the previous model an these guys telle us that the watch is so cheap??
Really?
Crazy people
This is one of the best interviews I have seen regarding the new IWC Ingenieur Collection. The questions are original, probing and not superficial. The content delivery is interesting, moving and learning.

Any idea what he's talking about at 7:22?
The crown guard and the high price are the deal-breaker
Personally I think it looks way better with the crown guards.
Chris is bringing iwc into a new golden age. It’s wonderful to behold 👏🏼
He adds another level of emotion when talking about this timepiece!
For me an amateur with limited budget, I may choose to buy 1 piece of Baume & Mercier Riviera 39mm with Baumatic 120 hours USD5500 (inc VAT) or a new Tudor Black Bay GMT Polar white (newest 2023) dial USD4500. If I am not mistaken, both IWC & Baume are using the same caliber (as sister's company of Richemont) IWC Ingenieur 40mm 32111 caliber 120 hours USD11,700. Am I right?
Wei, your jeans matches the dial of the titanium version! How thoughtful?
I have the Mark XX which has the same movement. It runs incredibly accurately when it is fully or near fully wound. Unfortunately, when I leave it in my drawer for a few days and it is in the second half and more towards the end of the 5-day power reserve the movement runs incredibly fast - way too fast. This happened just today when I picked up the watch after not having worn it for a few days and the watch was two/three minutes ahead of the actual time. It's definitely not a good look that IWC is using its customers yet again as beta testers for new movements. The exact same happened with the 5000 series movement some ~20 years ago - only one mainspring barrel with huge power reserve and then running super fast towards the second half of the power reserve. IWC has since fixed that by adding a second mainspring barrel but it certainly left a bad taste at the time. Sad to see the same thing repeat again with this movement now. Please don't view this post as unfriendly criticism or trying to put down IWC as a company. I am into my fifth IWC watch now and I am looking to add the new Portugieser 40 with the salmon dial for which I already put an order in with my authorized retailer.
My absolute two favs!!
IWC and Cartier. Perfect contrast.
Неплохо, неплохо. Но IWC до сих пор в роли догоняющего. Только сейчас у них начинают появляться мануфактурные калибры. Возможно, лет через пять догадаются производить часы меньшего диаметра. :)))
Too frigin expensive ... what market are they targeting? (above $10k it's got to be an incredible proposition - this is nice, but not for the price)
For the interviewer: Did you not* wear a watch on purpose as to not upset any of the company's you were interview? just curious
great video!!...whats the price?
30K
Buy used. The price should have been around 10.000 usd.
You wish
Chris! You are wearing my suit from 1978!!
I have ordered the black, hoping to receive in the next month or 2. However I heard the movement is not in house but a developed Richemont calibre. Do you know if this is the case? If it is not having a wholly owned in house movement, it is a bit of a distraction for me. But wont prevent me from purchasing. I have the silver face spitfire chrono on the integrated bracelet, fit and finish, delicious. I am a huge fan of IWC in general. To have a gerald genta designed/ iteration piece in my collection is a dream..
So refreshing to have a realistic conversation about price and what a Trinity Genta design actually means value wise… and something I would love expressed more of is this movement… as a Richemont collaboration, this is significant. This isn’t some cheap thing from ETA, as a base caliber it has for example, a higher power reserve (72 hours) than any Rolex in history, and then companies like IWC can do as the olease and get it up to 120 hours is remarkable… too many ignorantly trash this collaboration movement… great job! 🔥🔥🔥
Don't like the crown guards, big mistake!
Sadly, as stated, this watch doesn't have the in-house movement which is unacceptable for a reference costing 12K .. No matter what IWC does it ends up unwanted and consumers go for a Rolex or Zenith lately ..
They've gone the way of Panerai
Agreed, at this price point Rolex shadow looms large. For an extra 2 thousand which would put it at 14,000 usd there are ALOT of options offered from Rolex. This watch is beautiful and I look forward to grabbing one on the gray market at a 10% to 15% price reduction. I think if they would have done this when the world economy was booming it had a greater potential to catch fire. But as it stands the people with the money to buy these in general will go for a Rolex. I can appreciate the choice Rolex having beautiful watches but, I do think there is room for other watches to gain overall market share. But Rolex is Rolex.
I thought Omega price gouged the hell out of their watches. IWC took the cake and all. $13k for a basic movement that is nowhere near COSC or METAS certified is absolutely unjustified. Of course, how else would they pay the sponsors on the Mercedes-Petronas F1 cars that are constantly shitting themselves for the past two years?
You don’t have to change a genta design or modernize it that’s the thing about his designs. They were already timeless when he designed them
I like the idea of bringing polishing cloth 😂
Great! IWC is making Hublot now!
I’m quite conflicted- I think the titanium version does look great but then you realise actually titanium is hugely over rated , the watch seems to be overly priced based on the sum of its parts and then there’s its competition to name but one I personally still feel the steel GP Laureato looks a nicer watch than the steel iwc . Lots of hype surrounding this new iwc which is great for iwc but Iv got a feeling the sales qty won’t match up
I think a GP Laureato looks like a cheap Royal Oak. For my personal taste; the look of the Ingenieur is totally different and way nicer then a GP Laureato (or even a Royal Oak). I can imagine their will be more watch people like me who think the same, but not a lot ;)
Love the big pilot.
It looks like they took the case and bracelet from the Direnzo DR4 and added crown guards. But I will say they took it up a few notches with the dial and faraday cage. Very nice.
What he HELL? at minute 9:05 you suggest the price to be cheap. Lost all integrity after that. EVERYONE knows the price is way too much, I would argue 2x as it should be even. Poor journalism to not stay neutral and to crawl up their butt. Really embarrassing and trust me, watchfans and enthusiasts note and remember this stuff.
By the other reactions to pretty much all reviews everyone can see that IWC screwed up with the price here. These things will go for sub 10k even I believe pretty quickly. This is dragging down brand reputation, my god who is in charge of pricing at IWC, what a bad bad decision and also one showing the decision makers must be desperate or live in a bubble.
@@TheMonsterVince well said!
Congratulations to your new watch..it looks awesome 🎉
My favorite watch brand. IWC. Sweet!!
vintage a/d/s stereo???
retail pricepoint is way off for this
Will it come with additional bezels in different colors and at least 5 colorful watchstraps?
Pricing is incredibly unattractive. In what world does IWC command the MSRP pricing of VC fifty six, Rolex Daytona or nearly 3x a seamaster. Pricing at 8-9k would’ve been competitive not 13.5
Green dial is the best!
That dial they named aqua is actually the color of those brand new hundred dollar bills the customers carry inside their wallets when stepping inside IWC boutiqe, what an enthusiasm indeed! Blended blue and green😉
I find the price to be quite high. Half the price of what Wei! 😂
I want one!
Imagine robbers in places like London or Barca robbing you thinking it is an AP and end up with this 😂
The movement is a huge letdown, IWC should have considered this aspect for a real resurrection of the Ingenieur. Crown guards are also dragging it away from the Genta design.
Isn't the movment in house? Came out recently? And anti magnetic? Pretty good IMO
@@vincentschneuwly9783 They use the movement in some of there lower priced watches so people judge… I love the watch
@@henrik2456 Evelyne even said the new one with crown guards was “respectful” to Gerald’s original design.
I think anybody that cares about a Genta design is guna say, ETA movement for 12k???? I thought it looks great then saw the price, pass.
I'm getting Hublot vibes
Watch is garbage…. Someone had to say it.
you have tested it?
@@Rimrock300 with my eyes. Ugly. Thank you playing.
Very nice. Some very clever design work and very good metal work, but no clasp adjust (no half links?) and wait, what? How much??!!
Love the watch,, hate the price. Price is repulsively repulsive.
all great interviews from W&W, too bad most watches have that “been there done that” feeling, i do feel microbrands are way more interesting right now then these traditional brands
Love IWC, but to my knowledge there is no quick adjustment on the bracelet and you are asking this amount of money for it? No way this is acceptable 2023. And the watch is marketed towards technology and engineering…. 😳🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Fair point and it's the only thing I think the watch is missing :(
Men talking about jewerly. How sweet.
They have to listen to the fans and lower the price
The only thing I would have done differently is put the IWC at 12 like the original and had the cursive underneath but I understand you have to have brand consistency unfortunately
Underwhelming, extremely so
Wei looks so tired
If IWC will let me walk in and buy the titanium model, I’ll purchase one. If not, I’ll never walk into another iwc boutique again.
10 G's for a non certified COSC Movement.... For that price it should be META Certified! Hard pass!
The new Ingenieur is a little bit too small for my taste. I wish it was 41mm. Also too expensive for what it is. No see-through caseback and a movement that is the same in other IWC watches that costs way less. The bracelet has no quickset adjustment I believe so that is a bummer also. Overall a good looking watch that is too expensive and could have been much better imho.
Too expensive
Ugly bathroom floor dial. Ugly watch in total. And totally overpriced. What did the "designers" and the marketing people of IWC smoke?
Oh no. This is a real crisis.
This shows perfectly that it is not!! easy to produce an attractive integrated bracelet watch and why there are only a very few which are really beautiful. This one is not. And you will see this on the second market where these watches will be available way under list price.
The interviews of Weih of course are always very interesting and good.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Imo integrated bracelet watches are all unattractive. You either like Bulldogs or you don't. I don't like thick neck dogs or lugs. People like Gerald Genta design only because of hype and social media. Just like certain colour dials. It's just trendy for the moment. Not particularly good design, just a fashion of the times. Regardless, it's all about marketing.
IWC doesn't appeal to the younger generation. They need a few hip hop artists and film stars to wear them. Sing a song about them and place them in films. Even better if they can get a 007 contract. But as it stands, I only see accountants and conservative bank executives who drive Volvo cars wearing them.
@@oysterman962 I do not agree. A good design stands the test of times and will always appeal to people. A Nautilus was a good design, is a good design and will always be a good design. Hype has nothing to do with that. Of course it helps having a beautiful product but a hype has different reasons. The Patek and Rolex hype was maybe a more FOMO effect or like dutch tulip mania in the 17th century (btw thank you to the i.... who bought my 5712 for 155k).
A Mercedes Gullwing or 911 will always be beautiful cars. A Michelangelo will always be beautiful. Yes there are different times of fashion but a master piece will always be a master piece.
IWC has good designs, this one is not.
PS: This is a Genta design
