"Peaks of uncommon progress can be reached by paths of common courtesy." -- Bob Michel longest serving GOP leader in history. A retiring Republican who was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Democrat Bill Clinton. The at the time current GOP leader of the House who introduced a bill to thank then Speaker of the House Democrat Tom Foley for his bipartisan approach to legislation. Bob Michel was instrumental in getting Ronald Reagan's policies through a Democrat led House. He was a Republican leader for 14 years and not once were the Republicans ever in the majority. Presidents Reagan and H.W. Bush owe a huge amount of gratitude to Michel for his ability to get all of their legislation passed. When he retired his longtime aid Ray LaHood became his replacement. LaHood continued Michel's policy of bipartisanship and worked behind the scenes to disrupt Newt Gingrich's attempts at creating a wedge between House Democrats and Republicans. Obama chose Ray LaHood to be his Secretary of Transportation. A very important role if Obama was going to achieve his campaign promise of infrastructure repair. Unfortunately, the tea party took up the torch Gingrich had lit and destroyed the last bits of bipartisanship Michel and LaHood spent over 20 years building. At a time when we desperately need another Bob Michel, House Republicans gave us a far worse Newt Gingrich.

I liked it when there was no alt. right, who are the people who never used to vote and didn't care about politics, didn't watch coverage of politics on the news and thought it was boring. Then they found out you can hurt people by voting, and suddenly they are a "political movement" while having no knowledge and no principles, they don't even know what the words mean. They call themselves "conservative," but don't know what the word means, and couldn't name a conservative principle, while proclaiming anyone in the party they don't like to not be a "true conservative," still oblivious to what it means. Sadly, it was the conservative parties who were sleazy and desperate enough to court these anti-social "deplorables" as a potential path to power. It has gotten so bad I doubt there are any more principles conservatives who would be able to hold their noses and vote for the new version of their old party.

This must be a new meaning of the word, because for the past 50 years at least conservative Republicans have been staunch in their opposition to the USSR and Russia. The thing that disturbs me the most about Mike the Johnson is something he said in introducing himself.
He said he gets his morals and ideas from the 1800s and that he believes that things we have let go of since the 1800s are a big part of the problem in America.
I find it interesting and worrying that he goes back to the 1800s. Lots of the big ticket items that conservatives like to opine about being the “cause of the downfall of society” were points of progress in the 20th century - women’s liberation, civil rights, the acceptance of different sexuality, different faiths and new ideas all happened in the 20th century. The “nuclear family” (mother, father and 2.3 kids) that conservatives (including this Johnson) single out as the “building block of American society” didn’t even appear as an idea until a few decades into the 20th century.
So why does Mike the Johnson go back to the 1800s? What significant event happened between 1800 and 1900 that he feels reshaped the nation in a way that he does not like?
Could it be the civil war? Or more to the point, the slavery that was at the centre of the civil war?
Does the new Republican speaker of the house pine for the days when slavery was the accepted law of the land?
Can anyone think of any other reason that Mike the Johnson talks about things from the 1800s that are “missing” from today’s society?

IMO, extreme religious types tend to be that way - a condescending "confidence in their righteousness" as they would call it. In reality, a judgement against anyone (instead of letting God do that, like they're supposed to) and everyone that doesn't believe what they do has been ingrained into them so hard for so long, that I don't think they even realize the amount of hatred in their hearts - can't hide it form their eyes though.
I spent two years of my preteens "embedded" in that world - evangelical Christians in my case - but ANY religious zealots of any religion is just as scary - they are so convinced they're way is the only way, that nothing else really matters to them. At all. ICE, for sure.

We don't elect Parties no matter what what the Media pushes. I know the media pushes every election like it is a competition between the parties but that just isn't so. If one party happens to get more Representatives or Senators during an election then it was just luck, it wasn't a coordinated effort between the States. That funding for the IRS is saving the middle and lower classes from having to pay billions of dollars over the next years in lost revenue due to wealthy taxpayers tax fraud. That lost revenue isn’t erased it is transferred from the wealthy’s debt to the middle and lower classes debt via the deficit. It isn’t cutting spending it creates more spending. Republicans defund the IRS enabling the wealthy to get away with tax fraud they lack the resources to investigate top 1% tax fraud. Which they themselves benefit from. That’s why their new tax plan will get rid of the IRS because they are going to get caught committing tax fraud themselves. Virginia Heinlein has a lot to answer for (the quote about Democracy is a paraphrase of Robert A. Heinlein's writing, who was quite liberal until he married Virginia, who gave him the conservative bent most knew him for). The quote's not wrong, just that he was warning about the potential tyranny of the majority. It's interesting, in the attempts to take apart democracy, that this is what's being used to rationalize it.

It is scary that a lot of these new generation of GOP keep saying "America is not a democracy", frequently followed by "America is a Republic", as if a Republic could not be a democracy and if "America is not a democracy" then America should not be one.
    (1) They ignore the fact that the structure of our government as prescribed in the US Constitution is a representative democracy, or they have not read the US Constitution.
    (2) Democracy does not necessarily equal to majority rule, especially in a representative democracy (excluding the case of illiberal democracy.)
    (3) Yes, democracy is neither perfect, efficient, or all-wise, but as Churchill said, "Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.…" Winston S Churchill, 11 November 1947. I much rather live in a democratic country than in autocratic countries like Russia and Turkey, or authoritarian countries like CCP's China and Iran.
    (4) Unfortunately, USA is already no longer a democratic Republic. Extreme gerrymandering has turned our country into an illiberal democracy, and is pushing us into a one party authoritarian state like China. GOP always say how much they detested China, but they are behaving just like CCP of China. It is quite ironic that Mike Johnson is saying exactly what Emperor Xi Jinping has been saying on the world stage, that Western democracy is a bad political system and that other countries should follow CCP's political system, which is a one-party authoritarian system with an autocratic leader who institutes a cult of personality leadership
