Yuval Noah Harari on GOP losses, conspiracies, AI, religion & history: Melber 'Summit Series'

  • Why is the 'New Right' turning on conservative traditions? Why are conspiracy theories so potent? Why don't humans use wealth and technology in ways that benefit humanity? Renowned historian and 'Sapiens' author Yuval Noah Harari tackles those questions in an extended discussion with MSNBC’s Ari Melber, who asks Harari about his scholarship, its applications, recent AI developments and criticism of Harari's writing. The discussion also covers how history is written and interpreted, storytelling and 'fictions' as a force in society, including 'money' as a fiction; the implications of evolution and Neanderthal DNA; the existence and meaning of God; the enduring impact of America's 'founding fathers'; and Harari's views of his own intellectual reach, success and its perils.

The intense irony of Harrari, like Goldhagen ("Hitler's Willing Executioners") before him is that both authors correctly identified the building blocks of fascism and genocide, but they could never bring themselves to apply those lessons to the actions of Israel. He's viewing history through a post-modernist perspective, and initially he was fellating himself, lol.
Most of this has been discussed in the 1960's. "Fictions" are just descriptions of "grand narratives" and his examples of "competing truths" is well integrated into modern academia. His analysis seems to originate from Foucault. He has the bald head and glasses, too, lol.
Even Ari has to call social structures what they are "social constructs".
This isn't to crap on post-modernism, it definitely has a place for analysis, however I don't like the idea that it's an original thought and would prefer he use the proper context and vocabulary while discussing the subject.
It makes it come off as disingenuous and plagiarized.
At halfway, and he's describing "Post-Modern dialectics" which was borrowed from Marx's "dialectic and historical materialism" by Foucault.
The only real value from the interview, which lasted less than a few seconds, came from a description of progress as defined by the French Revolution. Particularly around the idea of "liberals" vs "conservatives", where liberals BECOME conservatives as society advances on social issues and the previous conservatives become reactionaries and try to radically change society back to a previous period and culminates into conspiracy theories and capitalization on culturally engrained narratives. It's a major element of fascism.
Likewise, the inability for liberals, now conservatives, are unable to protect the new conservatism because they don't want change, they want to conserve. So, a new left forms calling for change, so the center can't hold without massive reforms.
The best part of the interview wasn't even engaged in.

My grandfather used "popular anthropology" encyclopedia of humanity to attempt to recruit me as as a servant of Empire, protector of the peace and of all of these "funny little people." He himself being every inch the virtuous Christian Imperialist despite being a Trade Union shop Steward and Labour :Party Convenor.
