People who worked with HIV and AIDS patients in the early years were truly the salt and light of the earth in those days. No one understood truly what it was or how it was contracted initially. It was a terrifying time for everyone. I can only imagine what it must have been like for both the patients and those caring for them.

I had a professor who in the 80’s worked on an AIDS ward in Australia. She has shared multiple stories, so heartbreaking and inspiring. Now she teaches a new generation of medical professionals, passing on the knowledge and wisdom of her experiences working in infectious disease. Think she’s the closest thing to an angel a human can be.

I couldn’t cope with it I don’t think. I work in medicine. I see suffering every day, and yes I have had patients with AIDS on occasion (Australia). But on that mass scale, it would take so much mental and emotional strength to see beautiful young men and women fade like elderly cancer patients every day. Many would essentially slowly suffocate to death from pneumonia. But every other opportunistic infection or cancer would cause profound suffering, and these patients would have had it in multiples. I send my love and respect to the doctors and nurses who had the strength to support and care for the victims.
