I knew painting the Kratos Heavy Assault Tank was going to be fun. Painting a tank in Imperial Fists yellow was however going to be a bit tricky...so why not add another level of difficulty by trying out a completely new skill while I was at it? I used @ArtisOpus brushes to test out their unique way of dry brushing...and I think I nailed it! Can't wait to keep practicing this new skill and improving! As well as painting the Kratos, I also added some transfers and weathering effects using weathering powders, which I think finish off this beautiful beast of a model really well.

Ah yes the classic, “drive me closer so I can hit them with my hammer” tank. Love it. Thank you for such an awesome tutorial. Excited to use all your imperial fists videos for my army.
Haha yes he definitely needs to bonk someone with that hammer! You’re welcome man, glad you enjoyed it, and there’s more imperial fist videos on the way 😉
Those look like really nice brushes. It was a great idea putting those rubber bumper on your mat! I like how bright you took the tank, great color. Thank you!!
Cheers pal. Glad you liked it.
Nice video. Good to see you getting some hot merch also. 😜
Richard grey uses drybrush/stippling in a similar way in a bunch of his videos if you're looking for some inspiration.
Oh thank you I shall have a look.
this is pretty cool ill have to give this a try when i paint my chaos rhinos
I have a video of me doing this technique to a world eaters rhino and a sons of horus rhino of that helps at all.
This has come out looking fantastic!! 😍 well done!! 👏
Been using these brushes myself at points and they come out fantastic! 👏 well done
Ye my first real try. Really liking them.
I love those dry brushes! I did something very similar for my Emperors Spears repulsars. I’m very slow in building my kratos but 100% will be doing this but with purples!
Ace dude. I’d love to see the spears tank.
Just incase someone doesn't have the rubber stoppers handy, an old kitchen trick, a damp paper towel will keep the board from moving as well. Use it to keep a cutting board from flying everywhere.
Oh that’s a great idea! Thanks for sharing that, I’ll be stealing that for future 😄
Great video! The tank came out looking incredible!
~ Wolfbrother Methos
Thanks so much, really happy with it! More vehicle videos on the way too
I've been up in the air on what legion to make for a siege-based tank company, but your story for the tank commander and the Hammer of Dorn itself have helped me close the gap. Now I'm off to make a Dark Angels praetor twice over, one for his infantry model and one as a tank commander. Excellent explanation and demonstration on the drybrushing techniques for tanks, and a great use of the AO brushes! Thank you for your legion painting tutorials and the great work you do, cheers!
That sounds like a great plan, would love to see the results if you post them online anywhere! You’re very welcome, thanks for watching the videos and comments always help as well!
This technique works really well for most space marine things. Gives it more texture and roughness, which works very well for marines in my opinon. You can then adjust weathering to taste, with washes, rust and verdigris effects.
Agree 100%. Very keen to do more.
Love it! Makes me want to go out and buy the brushes and the tank.....more plastic for my pile of potential 🤣
Hahhaha job done so lol.
I am a huge fan of drybrushing since I do so much terrain. It is such a joy and effective. Great job on the tank!
Thanks so much pal. Also a huge fan of drybrushing. .
dude awesome video.
glad youtube suggested your channel to me. One new sub 👍
one slight comment - when filming may be beneficial to turn cameras colour balance to manual and not auto. Mid way through it goes through and mad colour shift trying to work out the green cutting board and yellow tank.
but it’s a minor thing.
great content look forward to the rest 👍
That’s super helpful. I’m still learning with cameras and the learning is going slow lol
Thats a great technique. I tried it on a macharius tank, and it worked pretty well. But yours looks even better! Great job. I've always preferred a brush over airbrush, though airbursh is much less time consuming.
I agree, i do airbrush some stuff but its usually to get through a large amount of models rather than preferring to use it! Thanks for the comment and for watching!
Brave man! But, Awesome result in the end. Well done.
Works perfect with the large flat panels..
Had the brushes since kickstarter but never been brave enough to try something this big... Although I do have all those Warlord Titan panels to finish....... :)
Hahhahaha break them out and get to work. There a waste just sitting on a shelf.
Really nice painting job with only dry brush technic
Thank you! Was cool to try something new!
Absolutely love it.. great to see, I use the same technique for all my large models
That’s ace dude. Glad you liked it.
I would like to see a space wolves tank, if posible. Love your videos😀
Hmmmm I had no plans for that rite now. I have for a space wolf infantry for 30k and 40K but no tanks.
i glued an old mouse pad to the bottom of my dry pallet and then trimmed the edges of the mouse pad. it works exceedingly well. I did try the rubber pads like you did first and they would eventually come off.
By the way around the 12 minute mark you note that it is a risk to get paint on the finished surface while doing details. Give the whole model a quick varnish (matte is fine) before detail work. Then if you get paint on the yellow, have a damp brush handy to rub it away. If you act immediately, you can get all of the mistake wiped up. The varnish provides an extra layer to prevent this from removing any yellow during that process.
Solid advice. Thank you.
Excellent video...really enjoyed that one. thank You
No worries pal. Glad you liked it.
looks amazing, need to get myself a set of those brushes for my guys
Ye I’d recommend them. Very good quality.
Interesting, I’ll have to try this! Subbed!
Appreciate the sub. Glad you liked the video.
love it, looking forward to seeing the rest of the imperial fist army painted!
Me to pal. Me to.
Really works well to give that "cast armour plate" texture to the otherwise undetailed large flat surfaces of this model. I usually work on smaller scales but I occasionally do a 1/35 that this would work great with.
Great to hear pal. And yes I did really like the slight roughness to the panels. It was a pleasant surprise.
Brilliant job! Brushes look fantastic
They are fantastic. And thank you.
So gritty so perfect
Hahah thanks.
Looks really awesome. I thinks a swig of Reikland on the yellow (I know its what everyone does but hey) would really level up your model even more
I shall give it a try. Cheers dude.
This is looking phenomenal
Thank you so much.
Looks amazing. Can you do a video on different pigment powders and ways of using them?
That’s a great idea.
Ridiculously good as always! I definitely do not have the skill or patience to do this myself. So I’ll be sticking to the contrast methods I’ve learned from you previously 😉 love the video though bro, such skill and very insightful 👌🏼
It’s a simple skill to learn pal. But I’m glad you have such confidence in the contrast method now pal.
Looks better than most airbursh painted tanks do 👍
High praise. Thank you.
I followed your style but did Angels Sanguine. I used some tape to divide the red and black areas.
That sounds ace man. I’d love to see them.
Great vid and absolutely love that paint job
Thanks pal.
Damn that Looks awesome!
Cheers dude.
I think I’m gonna give this method a shot with my Blood Angels.
Ace dude. Glad to hear.
Great video, I think I’d be too scared to that!
Gotta get brave. Just get stuck in and try it’s only paint anything can be fixed.
By the Lion I love no airbrush videos!
Haha thanks pal.
Big surfaces = big brush. Whether you're drybrushing or normal painting. Stippling gives a great colour modulation effect on these mono colour marine vehicles. Paiting WW2 allied armour which is just all Olive Drab gives you an appreciation of the need to do some colour modultion to give the vehicles a bit of visual interest!
Cheers for the input pal.
Looks great man, nice job 👍
Thanks so much pal
This was great! The tutorial was awesome especially since you used yellow, which is the worst. But, as a someone new to the hobby, the biggest mind blowing moment for me was the fact that there's something called weathering powder. It looked great and I really want some now.
Awesome man Al. Glad you liked it. And yes wearying powders are Great you can even make your own with pastel chalk.
Insane, I didn’t think you could get this from black 😂
Me neither lol. Thanks.
Looks awesome, but to your point about tanks not matching if you use slightly different colours (which I agree), would it not be similar if you don't paint your marines in this method too? I'd be tempted to try this method with my land raider from the HH box, but not if it'll stand out too much against the zenithal/airbrush contrast marines.
Well this is kind of meant to be for all the people who don’t have access to airbrushes and that kind of stuff. But both ways will work.
I love this video. Would the process be different with metallics? I’m a filthy member of the IVth and I’m planning on doing my Sicaran with this method.
No same would work for metallics.
I love the video, but I have real fear of using such a high value brush set on such a technique. Any chance you would do a similar video with some budget brushes, to see if you can get a similar look? For us more mediocre hobbiests 😅
The brushes didn’t get damaged at all. There very durable and there is a care video you can watch to learn jay to do after use
I tried using them on a 1/24 car. It works really well. The texture is a bit "not smooth", but I really liked it. And the brushes clean quite well with water & soap.
i don't have airbrush so found this very interesting
Glad to hear. That’s what I was going for
Im so so tempted to try this. My 40k salamanders were drybrushed the old fashioned way but the dtiple style looks so sweet. Just afraid about how many coats each layer could take if I have to thin it too mich. (Batch paint only so love speedy styles)
The layers are really thin so you could have quite a few. It would look great for salamanders.
@@MediocreHobbies Dam cheers for heads up I think im sold hi. Will be nice trying something new.
Looks great! I've never used weathering powders. How do you get them to stick? It seems like they'd rub off without varnish or something. Love what you're doing here dude
They stay on better then you think. Your applying them. To places where dirt would build up so most likely hard to reach. So not going to get rubbed. It’s the tracks that can be a pain. A light coat of varnish is an option but it does dull the powder a bit.
I have a question, I've never been sure if tanks should be on bases or not. I see you haven't put a base on this one, what are your opinions on bases for vehicles and if you don't base them, do you do much painting of the underside of them? Thank you, love the channel.
I don’t base tanks that don’t come with one. And no o have stopped painting the underside of tanks. I’m not flipping them upside down so it’s a ways of paint and time. Just what you can see. Hope this helped.
@@MediocreHobbies thank you, that's all the encouragement I need to not paint the underside of vehicles 😁
Great vid.
Thanks man, glad you enjoyed it
You're a legend
Hahhaha I’m alright lol
Oooo saved and shared
Cheers pal.
I may of missed it in the video but Did you panel line the armour or add a shade if the yellow went into the lines of the armour?
Nope that’s just the effect you get doing it this way.
Did the tank have some issues with the pieces come together? Sort of issue I had with the repulsor build. I see a partial seam when you’re painting that isn’t taking the yellow oaint
No no problems. Just me being lazy and not filling gaps.
Any varnish or such to hold down the rust effect powder?
I just don’t like the effect the varnish has in the powder. So I don’t use them.
You can go even quicker by drybrushing it a light gray first. I use a cheap granite color from Walmart and use cheap Walmart makeup brushes because you beat them up badly when drybrushing and stippling.
Well I’m going to try take care of this set. There are loads of care videos for the brushes and that. So let’s hope.
@@MediocreHobbies I've almost bought those brushes twice now, they look like they work great. But even with brush soap I can never seem to get drybrushes clean...
Think this would work with your space wolf heresy colors just substituted in?
100%. It’s the skill on showing it would work on any scheme.
Hi Andy. I am copying this exactly. Your averlund sunset yellow coat.
1 coat only ? And his thick ? I coat of averlund looks blotchy. 2nd coat ? More paint ? Or ?? Lol.
I’m sorry pal I’m actually really
Confused with your comment. Can you try explain it again for me. Thanks.
@@MediocreHobbies you answered it on your twitch stream. I am painting a tank. I primed. Then did a coat of dryad bark. Then stippled averland sunset. On mine it’s doesn’t look as good as yours so I was asking if you applied more paint. Or a second coat
How does the weathering powder adhere to the painted surface? Or do you need to avoid touching those areas?
You can spray a little varnish over the model to hold it in place.
I know it blows the whole dry brush scheme but if you hit those lenses I think it would be the perfect pop.
Oh for sure. Still a few detail bits to do. Have the other weapon options to do as well it’s all magnetised.
you wouldnt happen to remember what parts you used for the gunners arms would you? im using those mk2 parts for my siege breaker and i want to get a similar pose with the hammer
There all from the me 3 iron armour set.
@@MediocreHobbies thank you! thats what i guessed i just wasnt sure given the pose
Anyone have a suggestion for a really bland and boring color scheme for a cities of sigmar army?
What a strange question lol. Why do you want them to be bland?
What brush are you using?
All the brush details are linked in the description!
how does the powder stiick?
It’s just kind of does. Most people seal it after applying with some varnish.
I forgot to say that i looks great
Thanks so much pal
"Drybrush is not a bad word" 😅🤣😂
No it is not. It’s an amaizng tool. Lol
@@MediocreHobbies when is applied well (as you did) is extremely effective
@@Abraleo hahah thanks.
Why is there only one comment from a random spanish bot?
Cos the video just went up lol. And cos spam
@@MediocreHobbies now theres 3
holy cow they cost a lot checked out website just out of interest
There do but take care of them and they will last.
