How magical to hear these Victorian gentlemens' voices! (Kipling's speech from the same day is on RUclips as well.) Two of my lifelong favorites. I just love them. Thank you so much for posting!
This is a speech he gave at a luncheon given for Rudyard Kipling by the Canadian Literary Society. Radio broadcast c1934 according to chapter 26 of the book Wisdom and Innocence A Life of G K Chesterton by Joseph Pearce.
I believe it is the luncheon given by the Royal Society of Literature at Claridges Hotel on 12th July 1933 for the visiting members of the Canadian Authors' Association. Kipling's speech (his first broadcast) is elsewhere on RUclips and also a short filmed extract.
Well I agree it's not a high pitched boyish voice or anything like that at all. But it's not the big robust voice you might expect from a 6'4" 300lb man either. It's somewhere in-between. GKC himself once spoke of his voice being "the mouse that roared forth from the mountain."
This is great to hear! I knew Chesterton had been to the USA but I had no idea he had also been to Canada. I hope someone can identify the location. I wonder if this was recorded in my native Ontario :)

Recently I had the pleasure of reading GKC's section on Kipling in Heretics.
I wish I could hear his audio books in this voice... sigh....

This is wonderful!
According to Maisie Ward's biography, GKC visited North America two times, 1921-22 and 1930. This would have been the second visit.
Same speech pattern as Churchill. Guess it’s a class thing

I accidentally gave this a thumbs down when I meant a thumbs up. I love Chesterton. Wonderful self deprecating humor in this
Where can I find the original audio file? I can remove a large part of the background noise for you.
Nice
This man was way before his time, he stated that whosever escapes from here into canada is really free
Not anymore.
Do you know where this luncheon was held?
