It's the registered school nurse who cannot prescribe but they have knowledge of the medication, registered nurse practitioners are the ones at the DRs OFFICE who can prescribe 😂😂😂😂
Just an FYI, our school nurses are on the same pay scale as the teachers. Our elementary school has over 700 kids and one nurse! When I worked in Kansas City, the nurse was split between two or three schools. As a para, I worked at a middle school that had an elevator do all kids with health issues came to our building. When the nurse was at another school, I was in charge of dealing with kids having seizures, needing catheterization, severe asthmatics and all kinds of other issues. Not a nurse but I did what I had to do for the kids.
Yes, yes Bre, every school should have a mental health therapist at least. I am a psychologist and mental health therapist and while my hubby was stationed in Kansas, I worked in a middle school. My schedule stayed full!
The thing about lice and bedbugs even here in New Mexico, annoys me so much! You can’t send a kid home if they have bedbugs or lice on their person, you can’t even isolate their stuff and put it in a bag because we don’t want them to feel bad about it? Schools need to start inconveniencing parents more and things like that will get done quicker! I have met a mean nurse before, she chewed my kids out for going to her office too much, and that it was inconveniencing her in her day.
My school nurse was just a nurse who was a parent of a kid.. not always even at the school 24/7, on call from the hospital 2 blocks away.. they implemented surpervised hydration & body fat checks for wrestling, which a licensed nurse had to perform. She had to remind us all shed seen most of us naked when we where babies when she walked into the locker room
A student (6th grade) asked me a question today, I answered the question in front of the class. Two minutes later, that student asked the same question. It's the end of the year we ain't playing this game. I told the student they need Q tips or a brain scan. Hahaha everybody laughed, that was the last sound before their consequence test. Consequence from Tuesday. I warned them Tuesday and I reminded them today why they are taking a test. I need silence. And I got it. I'm a long term sub, started April 9. My colleagues told me about this trick Monday. Thank you.
Velvet ants are also known as cow killers here in Texas. Also, if there is a presence of velvet ants, there might be a presence of ground hornets (who eat the ants), which also means there might be tarantulas (who eat the ground hornets)
@ 36:12 y’all talkin about higher than normal temps. I was the same when I was little. My temp was always over 99. I hated school cuz I got bullied every day, so I’d get an upset stomach from anxiety (didn’t know at the time) and I’d ask to go to the nurse. Knowing my temp would be higher and she’d call my parents to come get me. Worked like a charm, every time. 😂
39:54 In my county all the teachers have to be trained in CPR. One parent advocated for this after his daughter died. However, I do not think we should have to take over the nurse’s like they do in the UK. We have enough on our plates.
Devin, I worked in a high rise in downtown Indy in 2001. One time, I was on an elevator with a colleague, and saw my boss with my friend's boss, as we exited. I looked at my buddy , and said, "Yeah, so I guess if there's no body, all of my murder charges just go away!! Hey, boss!" My friend started laughing immediately, at his boss' reaction. She stopped hard, and did a double take at me. My boss got on the elevator, and his boss did not. She talked to him in his office, later that day.
I taught at a small school that didn't have a full time nurse. Instead a school nurse came in 1/2 days a week, and looked at paperwork according to the office staff.
I got conned into licking the metal windowsill in Calgary in winter. I too got scared and tore the surface of my tongue off. I ran home crying with my tonguestuck out. Once I got home I got yelled at for not knowing what would happen. I got no sympathy!
The perfect ad placement. I love when this happens or it accidentally happens when y’all are talking about the blue pills. The commercial that comes on right after y’all do yawls little skit is 911 what’s your emergency? 😂😂😂
We ever going to get a episode about the media specialist aka librarians? They have to have some stories about the stuff kids will ask questions. I would love to see this.
My principal called me in her office and said close the door. I going through my memory bank trying to figure out what parent in complaining. She told me she has herpes. The look on my face😳 I was sitting on the other side of her desk like you're telling me this why🙄
I worked as an assistant manager at Walgreen's. I am not and will never be a medical professional. I would be stocking shelves or resetting a section and people would ask me for medical advice. They would show me all sorts of body parts. I saw a guy take off his shoes and spray antifungal spray on his foot after putting it on a shelf of kids toys. People are way too willing to share.
for the lice thing, the way it was explained to me by my mom who is a teacher in KS, the reason they don't send kids home anymore is because too many kids were missing school due to lice outbreaks.
In Texas apparently they say lice is a "nusense" bug but not anything they can send you home for that is what a friend of mine was told when her daughter kept getting it because of a child in the class whose parents either couldn't afford to or didn't want to treat them
I’m a nursing student and have not and will not work at a school, bc I’m pretty sure elementary school kids aren’t having babies, but at a school close to me, a child had to be air flown to another state for trauma treatment after his friend thought it’d be funny to put his pencil underneath his back while he was doing a trick and didn’t move it in time so the pencil, standing up with the eraser part on the floor, went through his back and punctured his liver and kidney. Ouch.
Can attest, went to elementary school in FL and there was rumored to be a black widow spider below the rubber mat underneath a swing I used to play on. I may have seen a scorpion once there, but never that wasp thankfully. But I was always careful because of that.
I was working as a lunch supervisor and had to run a kinder to the nurse because they had ran into a huge bolt that was sticking out of the play structure. Poor kid had a hole in their head and had to get stitches. And I had to walk the two miles home looking like I just survived a SAW movie.
So, you're telling me that the rest of America didn't require CPR training to graduate high school? Our PE teacher had us train during class and if we didn't pass we had to take an entire class worth of credits to graduate. Same with personal finance. That class was literally called "Econonics and Personal Finance." We trained for CPR in junior year if we had a nice teacher. Other teachers have to fit it in the curriculum every year.
My neice stuck a bead up her nose and we were all running around trying to figure out what to do. My dad THE FIREMAN closed her other nostril and said BLOW!!! It worked!
Oh my gosh....talk about sticking something up their nose... I was supporting a special needs child in art and I turned to help another special needs child. When I turned back to the child that I'd been originally helping; had modeling clay all over their face and they were messing around their nose. I said, "What's the matter?" The child replied, "I have clay in my nose." I tilted the child's head back and the child had literally stuffed so much clay up into each nostril you could see the bulges on the sides outside of the nose. I took the child to the school nurse and they had the hardest time massaging the outside of the child's nose to get out as much as possible; then trying to get the child to blow the rest out. It was frightening and hilarious all at the same time!

As a nurse of 20 years, I can look at someone’s eyes and see if they are in pain. 😢 Also, the red jolly rancher, I’m gonna say it wouldn’t work because it would be red but not inflamed (swollen)
I didn’t know school nurses were even still a thing. I thought they were a thing of the past. I’m in the US and we never had school nurses in my district. They still don’t as far as I know. We’ve got office administrators with ice packs and band aids
I hate that students can stay in school until their fever hits almost 101. Which is high enough to infect everyone else. 🙄 We don't send kids home for lice in Indiana anymore either. It's considered discrimination and a violation of confidentiality and FAAPE.
TEMPERATURE??? Y’all would be laughing if you’d heard me at home while listening to this. I worked 12 years in a family practice office with people dedicated to correct terminology, before this 23 years teaching. I kept hollering, “The kid has a FEVER! I'm a retired paraprofessional which means working with kids with special needs. I've have parents jokes, kid jokes, and things that happened when I cover the nurse in order for her to get her break. Sample. Nurse nurse I have a fever. I looked at him and then asked him if he just had recess? He replied yes. Laughing on the inside I then asked him are you hot inside or outside lol he replied mmmmm outside. I then explain to him fever only happens on the inside. He then asked why am I wet and my face feels funny? With a straight face I gave him a towel and asked him to wipe his forehead. He wiped hard I then asked him what is that called that wet stuff you just wiped off? He said Ms. Mellon thats fever.^^&(&%$#$#@
I have gotten my tongue stuck to a popsicle on a stick and ripped it off.....I was in like 1st grade. Yup it bled and bled. I'm 40 and I STILL won't eat them anymore
When I was in 2nd grade I had bangs and I went to the nurse she took my forehead temp and it was 104 my mom came rushing in I was completely fine just wanted to go home
Just last week 9/4/24 I was listening to the fire department radio scanner and I never ever heard of five different schools calling 911 at the same time for kids falling and breaking their legs and arms on the playground and the school nurse is.outside on the playground with the injured kids but one school called again as the nurse was outside that a kid fell down the stairs and was bleeding from the head but I live in a town with only three fire stations imagine the nightmare it was just to find ambulances to take every kid to the same hospital
i have lived in Florida for years mostly in Jupiter, port saint lucie, palm beach gardens, vero beach and i have never seen a velvet ant, but the lizards dont bother me, i like lizards, bre richardson needs to learn more about them because the lizards are super helpful, many of them eat the things we really hate, like roaches, silverfish and things like that.
So even though the child is sick or has lice. Can a parent pick up the child? Like can a parent say “I’m picking up my child” and the school will allow it?

Devin has some amazing stories from growing up. How/why he did so many hilarious but crazy at the moment, activities? 🤣
I was a comedian early on in life so I just always found the humor in the craziness and it stuck with me.
@@DevinSiebold I love it! Your stories are hilarious!
I've never even been close to being a teacher, but i enjoy this podcast!
Same here.

The beginning of this episode reminded me of "why did you lick your shoe?!" "TO see what it tasted like" 😅😂😂😂
Yes, yes Bre, every school should have a mental health therapist at least. I am a psychologist and mental health therapist and while my hubby was stationed in Kansas, I worked in a middle school. My schedule stayed full!
The whole credentials and other more lucrative job options also applies to Speech, OT, and PT.
we didn't even have a school nurse.. we had a attendance secretary with a cot in her office and ice packs

I’m a Salt Lake City guy and I got my tickets this weekend!!! Can’t wait to see them live
My step dad and mom screwed my window shut and spray painted it black when I was a teenager 😂🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
Nurses are amazing. Also recess paras see all the injuries as well. And bring all the injured students to said nurse(s).
In the 80's, I always had the best nurse, she went to Middle and High School. It was small school district.
I keep bandaids and cough drops in my desk and the kids hate when they can't go to the nurse to grab one of those items
2 seconds in 💭
Why is KC so chaotic 🤣🤣🤣
I can’t help myself!!!!!! 😂
I love you KC! You are great!

45:00 i broke my arm on field day in elementary school 😅 bless my school nurse for dealing with that mess
In middle school I used my nurse to try to leave so often from being bullied. I feel bad for them now.
Y’all gotta fan on? The way that paper is flapping on Devin’s arm 😂😂
Fan blowing full speed 😂
for the lice thing, the way it was explained to me by my mom who is a teacher in KS, the reason they don't send kids home anymore is because too many kids were missing school due to lice outbreaks.

12:43 I feel you Devin.🤣🤣🤣
I had a student (with a para in the class) pull his braces wire out during class. He was at the orthodontist the rest of the day!
Back in the day, confinement was the same as birth control. Plus, I'm sure dad told his daughter, "What I'm doing here is your birth control."
"This episode is sponsored by Zocdoc". But it sounds like because of Devin's childhood, it should be sponsored by Shock Dock.
Back in ye olden days, we got polio, small pox and measles shots in school. We just lined up as a class and got our vaccine. It was the 60’s.
I go to a trade school and the landscaping/horticulture teacher told us a story on how a guy ate a tulip bulb
I’m from Canada. When I was a kid we got vaccines at school all the time. Even HPV.

Can't wait for Fort Worth!
we had a meningitis out break in horn lake Mississippi at the intermediate school and we all had to go to the gym and get shots as students
this was like year of 2002/2003
Oh my God me and my two sisters had to deal with having head lice growing up and my mom did all the checking

I got my tongue stuck in a freezer when i was 2 and ripped my tongue off. I healed fine. I have a normal tongue. But blood was everywhere
I have gotten my tongue stuck to a popsicle on a stick and ripped it off.....I was in like 1st grade. Yup it bled and bled. I'm 40 and I STILL won't eat them anymore
I'm in Nebraska in a lower elementary school and I'm pretty sure the child got sent home
they do the lice check still at the schools where i live and they still send the kids home
When I was in 2nd grade I had bangs and I went to the nurse she took my forehead temp and it was 104 my mom came rushing in I was completely fine just wanted to go home

We need a nurse in elementary every day. 2 1/2 days is not enough
So even though the child is sick or has lice. Can a parent pick up the child? Like can a parent say “I’m picking up my child” and the school will allow it?
Outdoor education we need first aid and cpr, but that is a no brainer once we are teaching in the woods.
In Tn it’s considered a life choice to have lice or get rid of it
Im confident hours are better as a school nurse
All ants are in wasp family
A cup of milk for a tooth saves the tooth to put the tooth back in the mouth
My daughters school nurse called me because my daughter coughed but when my daughter broke her growth plate in her hand at P.E not one phone call her hand looked like a plum but no call I didn't find out until I picked her up
What happened that the nurse ended up in full body cast?
i love listening to y’all but recently there’s been way more ads and commercials
You can get tetanus from wood . I cut my hand on a wooden privacy fence and tetanus was a worry so they gave me the shot .
First comment! One of my favorite parts of Sunday!
The issue is lice, unlike fleas, don't spread human pathogens (CDC website). They are super annoying, but not actually a health hazard.
I don't like lice, and would keep my kid woth lice home, but I do get how a non-medical issue cannot be used to deny kids access to school (since core education is recognized globally, outside the US, as a universal child right).
Our nurse reuses ice packs enen the disposable ones. I'm not a fan. Also my brother got a piece of wood in his pinkie and needed surgery to fight the huge infection he got so the nurse wasn't crazy.
You want to talk about parasites? Reservation schools with dorms.....
I am so glad I’m not a teacher holy cow I don’t work for school. I don’t wanna be a government worker no more.
No thank you
velvet ant aka cow killer. WORST STING EVER!!!
im disabled but i never go to my school nurse, i think thats rlly funny ngl. i got my extra strength tylanol i got my braces i got my wraps, if i dislocate smth i just pop it back in and go about my day
