The vast wealth of natural resources could be cheaply shipped to New York harbor, manufactured into goods and sold both in Europe and in the USA itself. A grid of streets was carved into the forests of Manhattan and beyond, farmland was bought up. The canal was a huge success. The cost of shipping freight to New York Harbor went from $100 per ton to $5, and from 3 weeks to 3 days. European immigrants built the canal, the grid of streets and all of the other infrastructure needed to make these plans a reality. I live in Manhattan. How about they invest in more judges to process their cases quickly. Then, if they actually qualify for asylum, great, they stay legally, if not, they can quickly go home instead of being dragged along and us spending so much money. Most actually don't qualify. Current stats shows only 2 percent are legitimate asylum seekers. The general number is 3-8 percent , but so many this past 3 years are strictly economic migrants. It would be better to force them all out and give the legitimate ones a reasonable way to apply. No one needs to go through multiple countries or around the globe for asylum, so automatic rejection for all of them. Unless they are from Mexico or Canada, go home.

We can't compare our situation now to the 1800s because in the 1800s, Governor DeWitt Clinton made plans to greatly expand the city by digging the Erie Canal. In the early 1800s New York City was smaller than Boston and Philadelphia. But, there were grand plans for a massive expansion. The governor, realized that, if only there was a canal connecting the Mississippi to the Hudson River, the stage would be set for New York City to become the greatest manufacturing center in the world. The vast wealth of natural resources could be cheaply shipped to New York harbor, manufactured into goods and sold both in Europe and in the USA itself. A grid of streets was carved into the forests of Manhattan and beyond, farmland was bought up.
The canal was a huge success. The cost of shipping freight to New York Harbor went from $100 per ton to $5, and from 3 weeks to 3 days. European immigrants built the canal, the grid of streets and all of the other infrastructure needed to make these plans a reality. Even with a brilliant plan, there were still major social problems such as a tremendous amount of crime, poverty, and despair for those who couldn't make it. Many had to return to their home countries.
But, it was generally a win, win, win on all sides: business people got rich, working people found jobs and a way to live a decent life, city people saw their property values and opportunities expand, rural people saw the same.
But this time around, there are no plans except to replace a population that some of our politicians and faith leaders don't like, to virtue signal, to smash the middle class, and to look for cheap labor to do the drudgery that some are too lazy to do.

Even with jobs, the jobs these people can get will have them very poor. You will be stuck offering services for these families when the head of the household makes $15 an hour.
