Checking Initial Contact Conditions Prior to Solving - Lesson 3

- This video explores how to use the Contact Tool under the connections branch before solving to check initial contact conditions and avoid costly rework time fixing contact after a failed solve.
For complex models, involving many contact pairs, even if the contact pairs are all linear, a static solution still might fail if the initial contact conditions are not set up properly. Engineers need to be extra cautious when setting up the contacts between the parts, generating the desired mesh, setting up boundary conditions, applying loads, and finally solving it. And after solving such complex problems, what if it fails due to improper contact with bodies having rigid-body motion? Could that be avoided before investing computational time? Is there a way to check how the contacts are defined before solving them?

this video very helpful to undestanding the initial contact
I was struggling with convergence for days. This 16-minute video was all I needed.
It goes without saying “CHECK YOUR CONTACTS”
Don’t ever forget that.
Thank you for sharing.

Really a good and thorough explanation of the Contact tool! I have really had a hard time trying to find someone who explains how it is supposed to be applied in detail! Thanks!

Excellent video thank you. I recently delivered training to our analysts on contact and I always tell them to use the initial contact tools, can’t stress that enough. That said, I still learnt a couple of little tips from your video.

Great video, however, I notice one discrepancy: at 9'18'' the initial information shows the two bonded contact are far open but Without gap and penetration, then at 13'19'', the section view shows the two bolt shanks actually have gaps with bolt holes. Why?

Why your ANSYS generate the initial information. but mine dose not? I'm using your model. I tried to remove the contact tool and add it back, still not working.
when I insert "contact tool" it shows up w/ ? and no contacts listed

There is no gap and yet it's in red colour ....
