I can't begin to explain what this version of Chaconne does to my mind. I've studied and played the Segovia version for many years, and it's become very much a part of me. This is an incredible arrangement, and it's so nice to hear the parts that I didn't even know should be there! My God man what made you do this? What a monumental task. Bach is smiling down on this one, well done sir.

This is now my favorite version of this piece. I'll try to explain a few of the reasons why. Everything is amazingly under control. Your tone is so even and pleasing throughout. There's absolutely no straining to get a big sound, and yet the sound gets very big (I understand that the instrument contributes to this, but over the years, even the greats on great instruments seem to me to have forcibly pushed this piece, whereas you have not needed to resort to that). Every line is utterly fluid. The right hand trills are absolutely astounding, inserted in places that seem impossible with beautiful phrasing. When I studied guitar in college in the 80s, Bream, Williams, Fisk, Boyd and Yamashita seemed millions of miles away. Now, through social media, I learned about you yesterday through Rick Beato, and here I am today leaving you a message. I'm grateful.

A very unique and original arrangement: Mr. Mearns has brought something brilliant and creative to the tradition of Chaconne arrangements such as those of Busoni, Segovia and more recently Paul Galbraight's phenomenal interpretation for his 8-string guitar. Conceptually sound and coherent and displaying a wide range of musical resources (from ornamentation, unique fingerings and harmonic enrichments) that reveal the performer's own deep musical cognition in tandem with Bach's original score. The issue here is not fidelity but a musical fusion between Mr. Mearns and Bach (a daunting task at the very least): this is a new Chaconne with its own beauty and pathos. The rendition should be heard as something very distinct from the many other fine Chaconne interpretations out there and without any preconceived ideas of historicity or "appropriate" approaches (i.e. people who disdain arrangements of Bach in lieu of the original) toward Bach on the guitar: Mr. Mearns has achieved a great musical result here, something as great (and even more unique) as what Busoni attempted with his own arrangement. Sure, one may perform just the notes in the score, but Bach's music (specifically the violin suites/partitas and cello suites) also allows this. Whatever one's preferences, this arrangement is awesome in all its aspects.
All I can say is that he has pulled it off masterfully: both as a "co-composer" (recasting the original score) and as a performer in the pure spirit of the piece. An outstanding achievement in the history of the guitar.

As a pianist, I must admit that I've never heard the chaconne played on guitar. It's a beast isn't it? Busoni transcribed it for piano, as you may be aware and it's insanely difficult, but one of my favorite pieces to play... especially when I want to lose myself elsewhere for a bit. Then again, Bach, in general, is always a favorite get away (and one of my passions). Your playing is, absolutely, brilliant, sir. The way, for example, you let things breathe (and sing) with the variation beginning at 10:19 all the way to 11:45 (and then the fall into the next variation!) ... simply gorgeous! This is a beautiful recording. Bravo, Mr. Mearns!

Not since Segovia's transcription of the the Bach Chaconne, which is heavily influenced and inspired by Ferruccio Busoni's keyboard version of the piece, have I heard such a beautiful version of the Chaconne. The choice to use a Capo on the 2nd fret and finger the piece in E minor, worked very well. It seems to have leant itself very well to using Harp-style legato fingering for the fast passages that most guitarists struggle with to find a suitable solution. The expanded melodic voices and tasteful use of double-string trills also added a freshness to the piece that was a welcome surprise. Kudos for the lovely version and performance. 👍😎

The Chaconne is a true masterpiece work of Bach, stolen and made better by the guitar (originally for the violin). Great job with your Cap II version. I do like the rumble of the low E to capture the full range of the guitar and the range of emotions this piece takes you. 7:48 mark is kind of the reflective/acceptance stage of the piece. All elements of life/loss are captured in this 15 minutes of brilliance. Listen for it: bargain, depression, denial, anger, acceptance. Real players work on this piece for years..... and play it for a lifetime. yeah, i'm a big fan of this piece!

The arrangement I've been dreaming of for a long time has become a reality. This is a testament to what would have happened if Bach had arranged an unaccompanied violin piece on the keyboard. The active use of ornaments (which mostly replace dynamics), which are not used in violins but are frequently used in keyboards, suspended notes and acciaccatura, and rearrangement of voices are evidence of this. I'm not sure what he used the capotasto for, but it adds a polyphonic effect by making the guitar sound even more distinct. I think this presents an important paradigm in guitar arrangement for baroque music.

But there is something else, something mysterious and wonderful that Mr. Mearns brings to this enriching work. The inner beauty, the eternal thoughts and emotions of the composer. I believe Bach would love this authentic, true and probing take on his masterpiece.

Well, I'm guessing that anyone who listens to a 20-second sample is likely to hear something from the first three and a half minutes, and may be unconvinced this is music that _they_ want to hear. 😞 That would be their loss!
At first, I was wondering "What is Rick Beato so excited about?", since the playing seemed workmanlike but not particularly impressive. (But that might just be the inadequate sound of this mid-price mobile phone.)
Then the skies opened, the sun 🌞 came out and the angels sang! That totally dependable fingerwork never faltered as the dynamics swelled, roared and whispered. The inner voices were all audible, at any level. This is masterful execution _and_ arrangement! You clearly bring years of experience in building your skills, knowledge and musicality to this work. 👏 And yet nothing seems effortful or forced - it's still all _playing_ music. What 😊 joy!
When I listen to this again, I'll look for what I missed the first three times. (Yes, today, straight after Rick Beato invited us here.) And I'm going to see see what I can steal from you, Alan Mearns, when playing this on keyboards, piano yes, but more particularly harpsichord. Still, I can't help but pity all those listeners who lost interest during the quiet, steady beginning of the piece!

If stranded on an island with only one person's music, it has to be Bach, even though I'm not a big classical fan. He transcends all. And if I had only one instrument it has to be guitar, though I'm not a big fan of classical guitar. This recording puts it all together.

Remarkable arrangement and performance. This is to the guitar what Busoni's is to the piano. I admire the fact that you have not suffered from the usual fear of instrumentalists to effectively re-compose parts of this work by adding new voices (real or implied) and treating the arpeggio sections in a more adventurous and previously unheard of way rather than do what many do: play the violin version with an additional bass note here & there. You should sell this arrangement as by Bach-Mearns: I'm sure there are many guitarists who would love to try it.

When I heard your interpretation of the Chaconne the first time I sticked to it for weeks, but finally came back to enjoy the closer to original interpretations. With a little distance now I must say, your work is fantastic. I specially enjoy the extra counterpoint a little more over the ornamentation.
For me it is another piece than the one Bach wrote - but I think, he may have enjoyed yours too. Your connection to and understanding of the Chaconne seems genuinly intimate to me, which is, what this masterpiece deserves. Love it ❤
