Very true. I listened to him as a child growing up with Mother. Always loved him. I rediscovered him around 87 when I came across a Jazz CD of his. I thought it was someone else, but it was him! Loved it. Then this song reappeared on the Notting Hillbillies featuring Mark Knopfler(Dire Straits) CD if you're not familiar with him. Check that version out it's also very good.
Absolute perfection in every song he sang, accompanied by his tremendous talent tickling the ivory keys‐- rockin', jazz, country, gospel and anything else I forgot. One thing I will never forget is Charlie Rich, one of the most beautiful men and performers in the world. I will love you all the way to Heaven and back! 🌹
Beautiful song with amazing, moving words! This was the first time I am hearing Charlie's version; the other version that really made me cry was Notting Hillbillies (Mark Knopfler) rendition from their only 1990 album. Late Brendan Croker sang the lead vocals and MK played the most emotional solo at the end! It affected me so much that I ended my years-long stay in America and bought my ticket home to India in 1991. Music does have the power to move people. FLGH certainly did for me.
This is very good but you should listen to Tom Jones's version that he did live with Mark Knopfler. He knocks it out of the park! Charlie 's version here has shades of Leon Russell
This is gotta be one of the most underated songs. The way he sings this song puts you there really there where the rubber meets the road, it puts every thing into perspective, this should of had been a hit, maybe too much reality for some?
I just heard this for the first time. I was on my way back home from seeing my children for Christmas. I had to pull in because I couldn't drive for the tears in my eyes. What a song. ❤️
I know the feeling. This song did it to me when I heard the newer version by the Mark Knopfler band the Notting Hillbillies in 1990. That was also my reaction when I heard Vince Gill's "Go Rest High On That Mountain." I was on my way to work and had to pull into a gas station. It brought tears to my eyes. I had to explain it to the clerk and then my coworkers when I arrived at work. I worked in a music store at the time. I told coworkers at the time to skip that song at first. I forced myself to get used to it because it's popularity and impact I knew was going to be big. I grew up listening to Charlie Rich with Mother. I was too young to understand the true meaning of these lyrics at the time. Check to other version if you're not familiar. The entire album was pretty good.
Amen. He could sing ANYTHING and make it his own. He should be in the Country Music Hall of Fame, but he'll never make it. He spent too much time in rockabilly or criticizing the Nashville establishment.
I grew up on Charlie Rich this hiy is kne of the baddest, period the end... This song will be played at my funeral... When i hate my life I always come back to this...
I played a copy of this record at my dads viewing-wake back in 2000. It reminded me of his long fight with cancer. He had every surgery and took every "miracle drug" available to fight his illness, but in the end, the disease took him away. My dad died on February 14, 2000, surrounded by get-well cards, balloons, and Valentines Day candy. What a void.... an empty place..... my mother followed him not long after.
This song was one of many favorites for my grandfather, i like to think he's somewhere with my grandmother dancing away while the silver fox is performing ❤
This was one of the songs played at my great great uncles funeral on the 5.08.22. He passed on the 17.07.22 and that day broke me. Miss him so much glad I got to say goodbye though x
My favorite version.... Reminds me of listening to it with my mamma who we lost this past November. Charlie was my first concert ever...with Mamma. Thanks for this wonderful post...
It's the saddest song in the world. And it's exactly how I feel right now. Everything I done was wrong. And I'm tired and weary, and I feel like goin' home.
I picked up a Charlie rich record in the charity shop on a whim and I love it. His voice is so good and he does a cover of unchained Melody on it, a beautiful song. It works even on us younger people (I'm nearly 19). My dads asking me to pick 3 songs for his radio show Otl on soho radio and resonance FM, I might choose this.
Every person around the world who is trying to listen to the voice of God, knows this feeling. How special is for us to know that He is waiting for us everyday, even when we prefer to trust in ourselves. His love is so huge, that He gave His beloved Son, forget our sins, and is waiting for us, smiling, and telling us:" My son, I'm so glad I can hold you again in my arms".

Funny you say that. I grew up listening to Charlie Rich, but I didn't hear this song back then. What sparked this was when I hear he Notting Hillbillies version. Charlie Rich wrote and sang and played piano on his demo version of this song. Somehow it is even more moving than this polished studio recording. Check out the demo and see what you think.
Amen
Eis am Stiel Teil 8. Passt perfekt zum Ende.

Please put me in the ground to this
this was his kind of music. Not that Behind Closed Doors BS. Awesome singer when he bares his soul
Eterna dio esiste
Michael Burks did a great version of this song---check it out.
It's not country not jazz or blues can't say it's rock, roll but I hope your still singing somewhere charile tonight
Lemon sent me here 🗿
what version is this?is it on spotify?
This is the demo with instruments added after to try to make it more commercial. They should have left it alone or maybe just organ and bass. When the big vocals come in it's almost comical how much it betrays the song.
Yes ! My thoughts exactly. The moment I heard the demo with just the piano, I knew he lived this. A masterpiece.
Still prefer brendan crokers version but that knopfler solo ending is to die for absolute the dogs bollox 👌
