When I realize that Tom T Hall was my Dad's age, and us kids grew up on his song stories, I'm all the more grateful Dad's still here to enjoy sharing it. And I thank God for this talented man who left these musical treasures. May he Rest in Peace, and God console his family, closest friends and all who mourn his passing.

This song really captures that classic work ethic. My Dad had a fall from the roof... got a concussion and a broken arm....... all he could think of was getting the building done. He went home as soon as he could, and proceeded to drive the forklift taking supplies up to the roof so the building could keep going. (I took to swingin' the hammer) This is just one of many stories I have of my Dad's dedication to getting the job done regardless of circumstances.

Tom T Hall was my dad's favorite country singer.
When I hear Tom T Hall...it always reminds me of riding around with my dad back in the 70s on some old country back roads in Dothan Alabama in his old 1972 Chevy L.W.B. C/ 10 p/u...3 speed on the column...no a/c...both windows rolled down...Tom T Hall on 8-track tape...
Great memories and REMINISCING TEARS...I can still hear my dad saying..."Tom.T Hall's the best country singer there'll ever be"...thanks to my dad I still listen to Tom T Hall often.
I sure do miss my dad.

Tom T. Reminds me of a Old black man I met. His name was Cramus Smalls! I was about 20 yrs old and in the hospital for a operation. He was in there for a operation next to me. He had been a hard drinker his whole life. You got to understand. He's 80 yrs old and I am young white kid! He told me stories of the old times when he lived down south! Every night it was a new old story. I would listen to him till I fell a sleep. Him and I became good friends in that hospital! Young and old but just a like. It was after two weeks. I was to go home! We ate are dinner and he told me his last story, about how he left his Southern life and headed North to Michigan to work in the Auto factory in Detroit City. The next morning I woke up early to pack to head home. The curtain next to my bed was pulled back and Cramus was gone! I pulled the chain for the nurse. I asked what happened to Mr. Smalls. She said his stomach bled out and he passed without a sound. I still remember Cramus! When I hear Old Dogs and Children and Watermelon Wine! I get choked up and cry! Shawn.

Back When I was ten years old. I had my own little grass cutting Business. My Toro top crank mower, smoked alot. But, I kept fresh gas and oil from the Mobil station uptown. You know the one with the flying Red horse on the side of the building. One day after cutting grass in the hot summer sun. I went to the station to fill up my can with gas and to buy some more oil again! A man approached me and grabbed my strap on my overalls. He said slow down for a second young feller. I need to ask a question. I looked up through sweat filled eyes. I not suppose to talk with strangers mister. He spoke again in a clear voice. What's that spelling on the inside of your overalls. S.P.B. I said back! My name's Big Ben Gardner the gentleman said. You remind me of another young man I took under my chicken wing many yrs ago. See he was walking down a gravel road out in the country. He to was wearing overalls when I happened upon him. The lad was crying and kinda upset! He said his Father gave him a "Woopin" and walked out. On his mother and sister and him. He said. he was running away. So I asked him what's your name son. He said HEB. I said that's interesting name for a small boy. Ben and HEB talked for a long long time. Would you like to come home with me for some vittles and continue this conversation. Big Ben thought maybe he could get some thing out of the boy after he got a full stomch.
During the feast the boy spilled his guts about his beatings and his Dad running off with neighbor lady down the street. So Big Ben found out where HEB lived and took him straight home so his Momma didn't worry so much. Big Ben and HEB took to each other real quick like. Through the years. Big Ben taught HEB everything he knew about Fishing and Hunting and life in general. Ben evening got HEB his first car and real job. Later on HEB settled down with a nice country girl. Her name was Neva Lee Wray! They had four girls and boy! Neva Lee loved horses and singing to pass the time.
HEB like his daughters. But he loved that boy! He taught that boy EVERTHING, How to Fish and to Hunt and life in general! See HEB'S real name! was Howard Eugene Beck! When.Ben stopped Howard! On that gravel road H.E.B. was written in Capital Letters on inside of his overalls. Just like mine that day he found me! S.P.B. Shawn Paul Beck! See! H.E.B. was my Dad! Shawn

The Cramus Smalls story. Reminded me of another man, I knew in my small town in Indiana. He's name was Arthur EASY Walton! They called him that because. He never did anything fast! He was in his late 70's. When I met him. He had a sign in the old pool hall window. I was riding my bike up town as I called it. Even though it was a town of less 500 people, and the rail road tracks cut the town in half. I walked in and asked about the sign for help. A very short man with glasses and a Pall Mall non filter cigarette in his mouth said. I need a good man to take care of the pool tables and spit toones. I told The man my name and he stuck out his hand said my name is Easy Walton glad to meet you young man, your hired. He wanted someone for after school and on weekends to set the pool tables up and clean the place up. That was the first time, I heard of snooker and the the term. "Rackem up". I got 25 cents for each game I racked plus a whole dollar a hour. EASY, drove a 1960 Chevy Impala. The color was black and gold. Every day at one o'clock in the afternoon. He would do a"U" turn on the main drag and park in front of the pool hall. It was like clock work. I worked for Easy for many years. He taught me many things about life! How to drink Kesslers Whiskey from a pint bottle. How to blow smoke rings and Cuss like a sailor. I heard he lived to be 100 years old. I sure miss people like Easy. They were the salt of the earth!
