I'm 65 just like the Ol Grey Haired Gentleman in the song. Laying here on my Bed with my 5 Dogs and listening to Tom T Hall just as my Dad did with me God Bless you Tom T Hall 🙏
I'm lying here in bed with my two cats right now. I'm 59 & 1/2. I'm crying tonight while listening to the old country kings who have left this earth, and remembering listening to them when I was young. My heart is broken. I thought they would all live forever, or at least as long as I do. 😢
@Abe Lincoln...I could have said it better myself. I grew up listening to him. His songs were soothing, uplifting, heart-touching. One of a kind talented man. May he RIP💖💔💖
Not a person in the crowd made a single sound while he sang. They all knew the story, had heard the song a zillion times, BUT the storyteller was right in front of them and they all knew they were being blessed by greatness....live.

That old dog, a 15yr old pit female, when I hit the floor, 911 got called, that old 15yr old pit played on me, no one was allowed to touch me. My mother, pulled her to my side and laid on her, so rescue squad could get me out of the house and to the hospital. I'm that old dogs lifeline, and she's mine❤❤❤❤
So, this guy can get up in front of a full auditorium by himself with an acoustic and keep people spellbound, you could hear a pin drop, and probably half of them are trying not to cry they're so moved by this. Wow, will he be missed.
Mr. Hall looked so tired doing this performance. God bless this man for his will to sing to us, he was obviously worn out doing this concert as it sadly shows. As a young child in the early 70's when I first heard this song, I can still strongly remember the thoughts I had when this song first played in our pickup truck leaving the farm with my foster dad heading to town. As a small child I remember loving this song. It's still emotional 52 years later.
Oh how my heart hurts tonight. I loved Tom T. Hall and losing him saddens me greatly. This song was my favorite of all his songs and it had quite an affect on my own life. Now i am over 65, nearing 68, and this song still means a lot to me. Thanks, Mr. Hall, you surely will be missed.
The lyric,"God bless little children, while they're still too young to hate," may be the most profound one I've ever heard; ( written during such a tumultuous time in US history. If the story's true, the old, Black gentleman was very wise) Anyone who's missed his music has missed so much.
@@lincolnmaceachern2410 it would be interesting if that old gray black gentleman was still around and did a spot on someone's show telling about meeting Tom T. Hall.
Met Tom T. at the restaurant I worked at in Apalachicola,Fla. He was a gentleman NO DOUBT. He pulled Ms.Dixie's chair out so she could be seated first. My late father's favorite as well as mine. Told Mr. Hall I grew up on his music and his reply was.... More kids should have...RIP Mr.Tom T. Hall... YOU WILL BE FOREVER IN MY MEMORIES😘🥰🙋
This was a favorite of my sister in law who joined her sister, my wife, a couple of days ago in heaven. More tears. It won't be much longer before my number is up, and I'm judged. Meanwhile, I'll continue praying to join them in singing these great country songs. TGP
I'm watching this in June 2021. I'm 71 years old and how this brings back the memories of what real country music is. I was raised on it. Touches the heart and soul that none today does. Thank God for classic country music.

"Old dogs" are those with wisdom, "children" are those with idealism, "watermelon wine" is what helps you deal with the injustices of the world. I love Tom T. Hall.
Im 15 and all i can say is Tom T Hall, Johnny Cash, and Marty Robinson have saved me from modern music. I cant stand the stuff but Tom is just amazing. My generation has been lied to about what music is good.
+Blaine Patrick I agree with you 100%.Today's generation really does not know what good music is. I also cannot listen to ANY of the modern music. One thing I like to do is play this song over and over and listen to the story behind the words of the song - have you ever done that?
Dan Bern, Todd Snider, Johnny Hobo and the Freight Trains, fuck man there's only so many lines to list. Radio music ain't music, it's filler for the ads. We've got it just like Tom, Cash, Dylan, Townes, Muddy, Blind Willie.... just a bit harder to find these days. Check out Bo Ladner... killer dude that does a killer Johnny Cash show, a la the Elvis impersonator days.... peace and hair grease my man.
How terrible. I can think of nothing more painful than losing a child. I hope you have trust you will meet that boy again one day in a world far better than this one.
I feel your pain sir and thank God for my kids, grand-kids and in due in November my first great Grandchild. But tonight, when I lay me down, I'll be thinking of you and your boy.
Sorry brother it's a rough road.. My mama past five years ago now. I played Elvis gospel for her the night she left us. She made eye contact and visibility relaxed..shortly afterward she was gone. Music is a miraculous thing.. I wish you well.
Hugs to you both, I lost my Dad in March 2016 not from Congestive heart failure,, this is the music that he loved, and I grew up hearing on the radio, so therefore I also have an appreciation for the old country music...

I grew up listening to Tom T Hall, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson , Waylon Jennings, Conway Twitty, Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette , George Jones , Bill Anderson and all the country music greats.
@@Brian-nl1ok The context was storytelling, and I was speaking of lyrics and to hold on to your memories. I didn’t say I didn’t like Black music, just not a fame of music of the last 20 years.
This was T's last public performance, done at age 75. (He had pretty much been retired for 17 years at this point.) The 1972 Democratic National Convention he refers to was held July 10-14, 1972. He recorded this song 7/12/72 at Mercury Studios in Nashville. According to the lyrics, he had a show in Atlanta the night after meeting this man. That means it had to have happened on July 10. That means he met the inspiration, gave a concert, wrote the song and recorded it -- all in three far-flung cities over less than two days. He had more energy then than he shows here.
Tom T Hall kept me alive. I was trying to live after a horrendous hysterectomy and not sure I wanted to live. My husband put his tapes on a continuous loop. When my mind couldn't do anything else it could follow his lmusic and calm my soul. An angel unaware.
Just heard the passing of Tom T. Hall. And had to listen to his music. R.I.P. to the story teller of country music. You will be missed . But your music will be played forever.
The songs, singers and musicians in heaven must be the most beautiful thing. For all of you that continue to keep songs like this alive through these postings a BIG Thank you.
RIP Tom T Hall, you brought a tear to my eye hearing this song, because of my father playing this when I was a kid. You brought happiness to many, over the years. When you get up there and settled, look up my dad and his old buddy Reggie Waters and play this song for them. Godspeed Sir.

This is what you call COUNTRY MUSIC 🎶🎵😊🎵🎶🌹
"Old dogs" are those with wisdom, "children" are those with idealism, "watermelon wine" is what helps you deal with the injustices of the world. I love Tom T. Hall.

Contakum One of my fav songs and singers !
Im 15 and all i can say is Tom T Hall, Johnny Cash, and Marty Robinson have saved me from modern music. I cant stand the stuff but Tom is just amazing. My generation has been lied to about what music is good.
+Blaine Patrick he is my cousin
your awesome...wish more of the younger generation would understand that
+Blaine Patrick I agree with you 100%.Today's generation really does not know what good music is.
Check out Bo Ladner... killer dude that does a killer Johnny Cash show, a la the Elvis impersonator days....
peace and hair grease my man.
if you cant find any good madern music you arent looking hard enough. if you mean radio , then yes , i totally agree
Never get s old hearing that song.
My 8 year old boy, Blaze, died of lymphoma this Monday at 230am in my arms. This song means alot to me. Rest easy Blaze, you were a good boy.
Sorry to hear of this! My sincere condoleces!
I’m so sorry...
How terrible.
I can think of nothing more painful than losing a child.
I hope you have trust you will meet that boy again one day in a world far better than this one.
Je vous souhaite sincères condoléances...Blaze will always be with you
Michel Roy Montréal, Québec.
I feel your pain sir and thank God for my kids, grand-kids and in due in November my first great Grandchild. But tonight, when I lay me down, I'll be thinking of you and your boy.
My mom is in a nursing home with the later stage of dementia. This song made her smile. I play music for her when I visit her.
Sorry you are going through the hell that dementia is. I'm in a similar situation and can emphasize a little. One day, they say, it will all be over. Looking for that day myself.
Donald Mack, I am so sorry for your loss. My son nearly lost his mind when he lost his 12 year old daughter. May we all have peace.
STAY STRONG, YES,, LISTEN TO THE MUSIC AND PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU ALL THRU THE LORD JESUS CHRIST ❣❣PLAY SONGS 4 UR MOM, I went to the same thing with my mom in 2010 nursing home with dementia I feel you only got prayers with you music if I allow any service job in a special thank you do that lady want to like only you may know to bring peace and happiness make as many good memories as you can prayers for healing and strength always open adore didn't find any kind of Civility group Tanger out there just ask someone if you can't I don't know how old you are but anyway take video and pictures even if you think you don't want to now you will probably be later or someone will God bless
Long live country music
I grew up listening to Tom T Hall, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson , Waylon Jennings, Conway Twitty, Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette , George Jones , Bill Anderson and all the country music greats.
Utterly captivating... A story about an old grey black gentleman... Sung beautifully by an old grey white gentleman. RIP Sir... You deserve the rest.
Love tom. 1 am 93.
@@cyrenahenry4205 I'm sure that you're a beautiful lady! 😊
At 75 years of age, I still cry when I hear this song. Thank you Mr Hall.
It is beautiful ain't it ❤
60😢❤
RIP Tom T. The storytellers these days that can even hold a candle to these fellas of yesteryear are getting fewer and further between
Mmm hmmm!
You said it!
This video shows it so well too.
Absolutely, and I am Black with no appetite for the music our people make the last 20 years or more. Hold on to your memories when all else is gone …
I invite you to seek out Mary Gauthier (go-shay). Amazing songwriter. She is considered Americana.
@@FactsOnlyPlease. you’re funny man… I don’t know how anybody can Not listen to that music, and it don’t matter what color your skin is
@@Brian-nl1ok
The context was storytelling, and I was speaking of lyrics and to hold on to your memories. I didn’t say I didn’t like Black music, just not a fame of music of the last 20 years.
When I was young this song played on the radio my dad loved it ,it takes me back to those days god i do miss you dad
Thank you tom don’t make songs like that anymore buddy magic from England 🏴
7,312,637 people have heard this..........and they all sit like the ones in this video....in awe at the musical genius of Our Tom!!

Love me some Tom T Hall...
It's Late May 2020... Stupid World?
Hell Hoss, You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet!
Listening to this when l was 18. Now l will be 65 in 2 months. Just like the first time. Still feeling it.
I'm with you my friend
My Daddy loved this Song🙏🌞
Just heard the passing of Tom T. Hall. And had to listen to his music. R.I.P. to the story teller of country music. You will be missed . But your music will be played forever.
Same here RIP Tom T thanks for the songs.
The songs, singers and musicians in heaven must be the most beautiful thing. For all of you that continue to keep songs like this alive through these postings a BIG Thank you.
This world is an emptier place without Tom T imho
Hello there today
Only a kind soul could write a song like this. RIP Mr. Hall.
RIP Tom T Hall, you brought a tear to my eye hearing this song, because of my father playing this when I was a kid. You brought happiness to many, over the years. When you get up there and settled, look up my dad and his old buddy Reggie Waters and play this song for them. Godspeed Sir.
One of my favorite singers as well and songwriters but the way he went out, I don't know if you'll be up there or not

Me too my dad loved Tom t hall
I remember the days standing on the seat besides my father in his 71 ford truck. I will always have this and others in my heart. I'm 58 now these songs will live on sign. Sleepless in. Sevierville. T. N.
My sister was a lifelong fan and, when her husband got her tickets for his concert in London for her birthday, he remembered and invited her back stage. Absolute legend of a storyteller and a man
It’s not often that the loss of a celebrity or musician effects me but this one hurts.
Rest In Peace Tom. You’re going to be missed. The world was truly a better place because you were in it.
Amen.
I cried too

.Tom t hall was one of a kind, so down to earth songs!!!
They don't make country music like they used to., too bad!
He had a golden voice. R. I. P. Bought his records here in Denmark late 70. Greetings from Denmark ❤❤❤
This man was a genius yet was so modest about his abilities. He made songwriting look so easy.
Rest in Peace Tom T.
Hello Ciaran how are you doing?
Ĺ
He is 84 years old this year, and all I can say is this man is a gift from God, to country music. He is priceless, and there aren't many like him left! Treasure this people.
It's a shame what happened to him after you wrote this. Cannot believe he would do this to himself
@@gregadams6055it is sad and unfortunately likely more then him handled COVID this way at first
@@Mikebaillie2024 I think I read that his autopsy showed a certain drug in there that he used to take to prevent him from drinking. I forgot the name of it. He struggled with alcohol addiction his whole life. He must have had a relapse or something.
@@gregadams6055 maybe you are right not trying to start an argument but I thought I heard something about it being Covid related maybe I’m wrong
@@Mikebaillie2024 if you are talking about Tom t Hall, he shot himself in the head and his only son found him like that
I'm almost 60 yrs old and this was my dad's favorite song 🎶🎵🎶😚I can remember hearing him sing this song in his truck while taking me to school. 🎶🎵🎵💖
That was well worth 9 minutes of my life.
So true
GOD BLESSED TOM T HALL. one of the great singers of all time..

We've lost another great country singer. May God keep his family strong in this time sorrow.
I was raised by my grandparents my mother died when I was ,12 when she died my dad died after that that when I was raised by my grandmother on the farm i started writing stories and I still write stories
I just wonder who the 91 people are who dislike this. Tom T Hall is what Country Music is about. Love the Storyteller
Tim Walker They're 91 people born without souls.
Another great and my definition of music is someone who Tom T mentioned Johnny Cash.
Tim Walker yes I agree, why would they even bother.

I listened to this first when I was about 10.I'm 53 and still enjoy it today.
No one better 😢
Country music is not only music, but an experience and a way of life.
Like one of his song suggests: Country Is.
Absolutely!
Story of life.
Tom sang this song from the back seat of my Camaro as I drove him from bar to bar in Phoenix to sing and help promote him new L.P. and get more radio airplay on the west coast. I was the morning D.J. on a country music station in Phoenix. What a night, what a memory and what a treat! Thanks Tom, I guess it worked pretty good. W. Steven Martin Broadcasters Hall of Fame!

What a chance of a lifetime to see this live. The man at the end of the song with his guitar under his chin had a religious experience.
Just another beautiful legend fading away from us.Country music doesn't get any better than this.

Hi Kathleen
This poem is beautiful, I hope you read this and know it's from me to you .❤
They use the term "artist" a little too freely today referring to singers. This guy was an Artist!!!
Yes we
They don't make em like this no more!
artiste... it's got an e on the end
Funny too!
