My plastic transmission went bad within its two-year warranty so luckily the shop replace the part they said they put a better part in there I don't know if it's true or not, LOL. But it has been working for three more years so my tractor is 5 years old now. But now my deck is all rattling all over the place and things coming off, haha. I think I'm going to have to take a good look at the deck and secure it again better for like the 4th time. Good luck have fun enjoy life and thank you.
You, (and everyone else!) left out the most important part of correctly seating the two levers on either side of the double pulley unit, where they sit inside two curved indents in the top of the transmission. If it’s seated properly, the four screws go through the plate (that has the screw holes), and the plate sits right on top of transmission. Also, the transmission is NOT, “plastic," but a composite. The unit (top of the transmission) linkage has to be cleaned out periodically or it won’t work properly, (sluggish). It’s actually an amazing piece of engineering. Keep it clean, go easy on the pedal, replace the belts when you have to.
There are literally dozens of videos showing how to replace all the other belts on my mower, but this is the first one I found that shows what I need. My Husqvarna appears to have the exact same transmission and belt. Thank you so much.
One reason they malfunction is grass, twigs, dirt, and mud getting caught in the mechanism on top of the transmission. If yours starts acting up, clean the top completely first. RUclips has a video on how to find out what is wrong with it, should it start malfunctioning. It is filled with grease for life, but the axle seals wear and eventually leak. They are easy to change. If you let it keep leaking, the transmission will eventually fail from lack of lubrication. When replacing screws into plastic, it is a good practice to place the screw into the hole, then apply downward pressure while turning it counterclockwise until it slips downward. Then immediately quit turning it counterclockwise, and turn it clockwise to tighten it. Doing that will use the same threads the screw originally made, when it was first screwed into the plastic. If you do it like that, you will never wear out the threads in the plastic, no matter how many times you remove and reinstall the screws. IF you keep the top clean, and replace the axle seals when they start seeping oil, the transmission will last quite a while.
I have a 2016 with the plastic transmission I mow about 2.5 acres every other week and I have not had a problem with the transmission I have big hills on my property and I weigh 300 lbs i am having to change that very drive belt today thank you for the video it is very helpful
I've had a ariens with that trans for maybe 7 years. Bought it used. 4 years ago I blew out the axle seals and some grease towing a yard roller up a decent hill. Replaced and mowed on. Had .75 of an acre at the time. The last 4 years I've used to trim and mow wet spots on 10 acres of hilly open field. (sometimes entire yard). Now I've lost power up hills and I think this is why. Thanks.
Great video Bob. I went to the website of general transmission and they have a video about this trans and they say the belt should never need to be replaced on the video. LOL Can't remember who it was but i think i have seen one video about these plastic transmissions it had a problem and the there was no serviceable parts inside it they had to throw it away and replace it thats all i know about them. Hope everyone is doing well. Have a great weekend. God Bless!!!
Thanks for this video, doublewide6! I have had my Poulan Pro for almost 6 years and the drive just gave out. I don't have too many hills, but I do have lots of tree roots and soft yard to contend with. I will try to tackle this situation soon. Thanks for the guide to replacing the belt and hopefully that is what my problem is and I'm confident that I can get this done!
I bought my Ariens (built by Husqvarna, same parts), A20AV46 (20 hp B&S motor 46 inch cut) in 2014. It has the same plastic tranny as yours (General Transmission RS800). I have an acre lot plus rental property that I mow and also a church property that I mow. It has lots of yards under it belt(s). I just today replaced the leaking axle seals, they started oozing grease two years ago. Sharpened the blades once, replaced once. Replaced the original air filter last week. Replaced the battery once. Still on the original belts and spark plugs. Original tires, added green slime. It's the best riding mower I've owned. Have owned four so far. Two MTD's, one Craftsman.
What I’ve found several times, when they were told tractor has to have a new transmission is removed battery and box, vacuum all the grass out, then blow air under drive unit close to rear and remove 4 screws Pressure wash really good Problem solved and works great again 😊😊😊😊
Yeah I was quoted $1400 for new transmission & install. Talked to the manf. and they told me just to replace the driven kit on the outside for $80. I did that, but didn't seem like there was anything wrong with it. I think it was just the thorough cleaning like you say that did the trick for me. It's nonsense they have so many exposed moving parts subject to packing grass that you can't reach to blow out in normal daily use
@@Grrrnthumbon one customer had me drill 1 inch holes for him to blow out the grass and he said he has not had any problems and he mows every day but Sunday 😊
My mower has been sitting for a year now because I couldint find any info where to find the belt ive learned everything else about this dam mower but that belt thanks allot man huge help
I got about three years out of my seals and it was a quick fix. I considered drilling and tapping for zerk fitting but being plastic I decided against it so I wouldn’t create a weak spot. Getting ready to do a belt in the next couple days.
our poulan pro is over 10 years old and goin strong.. most of the property is hill its about 2 acre total only had to do one seal this past year but now workin on findin the sluggish hill pull problem the belt is fine
Good video! My only comment is it was driving me crazy seeing you work around with all that grass. I would have blown it out of there with compressed air first. Just my OCD!
Great vid, thanks for sharing! 👍 Your persistent kid at 7:12 had me cracking up. I can't work on anything without being impatiently interrupted by my lil monsters. 😂 Bless you brother.
Bobby is doing great! We are still very active in the cancer community. This past year we had 2 kids from Bobby's school that passed away grades 7 (nuerobastoma) and 5 (brain cancer) and a 10th graded that has the same cancer (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) as Bobby that has relapsed. Got to make each day count!
I have the same tractor owned it 3 years and it's the worst one I have ever had. My issue is the forward reverse pedal doesn't move. I can go forward it's really hard to push to increase speed, it won't return to neutral and in order to get it into reverse I literally have to stomp the pedal. To the point that I bent the reverse side of the pedal, I just pressure washed all of the crap built up on the top of the transmission and it works a little better. Changing ground speed in forward is much easier still won't return to neutral and still have to jump on the reverse side of the pedal to get it into reverse. Last tractor was 20 years old when i replaced it this one is 3 and I am ready to take it to the junk yard. Never had any luck with Husqvarna and never would buy another product from them. When I purchased a Poland Pro I didn't realize it was made by them or I never would have dropped a dime on it
Poulon Pro PP20VA46. Forward and Reverse on the same pedal. Reverse pedal and motion works. Forward pedal is disengaged. Transmission Problem? Any tips?
I have the Craftsman T240 Turn Tight tractor with a Kohler 7000 series 22 horsepower 725cc V Twin engine 3 year unlimited hours warranty...Tuff Torq K46 transmission has powered coated steel gears no plastic..
Thanks for the video. Does the belt that you replaced always spin? My tractor won’t drive. When accelerator is pressed the rear pulley moves forward which loosens the toothed belt. I wish I could have seen this drive unit in operation.
I’ve been wondering the same thing for days while working on this. The one I’m working on is grinding as you attempt to drive. It’s like gears won’t mesh, making me suspect that drive belt should stop spinning when not driving, but it spins constantly. Is it supposed to? It’s like a skidoo clutch, at least in appearance. The belt looks ok, but not perfect, and could have shrunk a bit? I dropped the transmission as it was a pita to work on in the tractor. Any suggestions?
Was this a broken belt? Or other issue? I have a 3 year old Poulan Pro Pp19A42 that does not move. I blew out all the grass and cleaned on top of transmission. Tractor would move but not for long. If you pull on the brake lever at the back of the tractor it does not release. Is this also a belt issue or another problem. Thank you.
I know that this is a late response but the tuff torque transmission sometimes starts to go slow down to nothing. You will have to replace the oil in the transmission. It will eventually go bad. Regular 30 weight motor oil. 👍
Great video👍 Question though , was the belt broken or stretched? How did you know that was the problem? I haven't had that issue yet but I've had to replace axle seals and I found out they go bad because there is to much slop back and forth with the axle. I'm actually putting a video put tonight on my thoughts about this transmission
Guys,if you have this type of axle it is a great idea to pull the wheels and add never seize. I would imagine that hearing or beating them to remove would destroy the plastic transmission
I am starting to run into the newer mowers and blowers as far as repairs and the lack of quality. It makes me sad to see the industry going to plastic on everything. The triangle shaped screws you showed are designed as a one time use and are a real bugger to get back in. I have been going to the hardware store and purchasing screws that actually work. I just repaired a Husqvarna snow blower, 3 years old with a broken arm that holds the drive cable on the front cab. They are made of flimsy plastic that break really easy. I informed the owner he could expect it to happen again in the future. The replacement part is $50 and requires removing everything. I cringe at having to work on the newer riding mowers. I am about to retire from doing small engine repair with the way its going.
thanks dw ... have a ? for you .. if a person buys a new lawn mower or tractor how long down the road should someone check to see if the valves are still tight or need tightening .. †
I would not worry about it unless you have hard starting, backfiring popping, or rattling/ticking. If you want to open it up and check it out it won't hurt anything. Just my 2 cents.
Few steps missing, good one is to engage parking brake to relieve tension on primary belt. Could blown out all the grass n debris bfore puttin all bak together. Few other things but, oh well
I was told that I would have to replace the entire transmission but I need to check into this type of fix. Mine is a poulan pp19a42 with a b@s engine. One question about the belt. How did you know was there a broken belt under the battery box?
mine all the sudden after 2 years won't move forward or reverse but runs fine the belt I don't think was on the ground would it still be possibly up there?
? For you , I have a craftsman tractor with a briggs and stratton opposed twin engine on it , and I was wondering if you could tell me how remove and replace the pto crank seal on it without removing the engine? Lmk.
Remove clutch and pulley from bottom of crank. Drill a small hole in old seal, use a screw to drive in the hole and remove the old seal. Take oil out first.
There is a vertical pin sticking up in the top of the transmission. The long horizontal push rod has a looped end the fits over the pin, then an E-clip locks it down so it won't hop up and get loose. There are videos showing the details of the RS800 transmission on General Transmission's website

Great fix Bob 👍 I personally haven't worked on one with the plastic trans. However I've heard the axle seals go bad in 3 or 4 years.
Didn't know that this one is not leaking, so far....
Yes they do mine is leaking wondering can you fill with oil.

Haven't had to do that repair yet, but good to know that it's an easy fix. Thanks!
You’re a dog gon’ lifesaver man. Been searching for days. I have the same problem, same mower
Good video, the belt is Warranted by poulan pro for 10 years no joke it's in the paperwork. Those rs800 transmission parts are about $60 on eBay
Thank you. I followed your instructions and was able to fix my poulan pro myself.
Great repair DW6, tight working conditions! 👍👍

This is the best video ever!!! I thought I was gonna have to remove the damn body! Thank you so much!
No one laughed here! Great video! Just the right balance, just enough of the right intel. Thanks for the video
I own a push mower so none of this really applies but I’ll still drop the first like👍🏼
Good video! My only comment is it was driving me crazy seeing you work around with all that grass. I would have blown it out of there with compressed air first. Just my OCD!
Nice job. If all battrys are over that pulley that should be a straightforward repair. Thanks.
Hi

I have same lawn tractor after put belt pulley won't move freely what can i do
Thanks

Thanks. You've saved me some serious cabbage.
excellent explanation of procedure.
Sir I owe you a beer for the help and part numbers
Does it have to be in neutral first or a specific gear. And how do you get the transmission out.
Thanks. Great info! Just finding the belt would have been a PIA.

Dude, do some research on GT Transmission's website. It's just dirty underneath clogging the variator levers. No big deal.
Poulon Pro PP20VA46. Forward and Reverse on the same pedal. Reverse pedal and motion works. Forward pedal is disengaged. Transmission Problem? Any tips?
I replaced the transmission belt and still can't get in reverse or forward. Wondering if it's this belt. It seems a little lose.
I have the Craftsman T240 Turn Tight tractor with a Kohler 7000 series 22 horsepower 725cc V Twin engine 3 year unlimited hours warranty...Tuff Torq K46 transmission has powered coated steel gears no plastic..
Did the original belt break or was it warm out? My belt is intact but my machine will not go forward or reverse.
Have you ever had a problem the reverse being intermittent or just barely moving
What do you reckon would cause this belt to keep breaking? Something is happening. I have replaced two on a Husqvarna in the past month
Thanks.... Trying to find the belt. Numbers missing and sticker gone.
Thanks for the video. Does the belt that you replaced always spin? My tractor won’t drive. When accelerator is pressed the rear pulley moves forward which loosens the toothed belt. I wish I could have seen this drive unit in operation.
Commenting to myself…. It was the variation assembly. At first glance I didn’t notice that the plastic bearing was completely gone. All fixed now

Hey Dave, I will check out the video. The belt was completely shreaded and wrapped around the back pulley.
Good catch on removing the bolts. I saw another video on this where the guy used a different procedure and there were a bunch of steps involved
Guys,if you have this type of axle it is a great idea to pull the wheels and add never seize. I would imagine that hearing or beating them to remove would destroy the plastic transmission
What were the symptoms before the change, mine grinds when I try to put it in reverse.
Craftsman has the gas tank under the seat but everything looks the same. Is there 2 types of these mowers?
I have the same one and I’m trying to figure out how to get this replaced
It's 2019, which riding mower engine do you like the best? Kohler or Briggs & Straton?
Well done 6

thank you !
Watch -Taryl fixes all-he has some things to say about it.He is working on a john deere. replace variator pulley
Going forward no problem its reverse I have a problem so how is changing belt going to change proble
I found half a belt when I dropped the deck
mine all the sudden after 2 years won't move forward or reverse but runs fine the belt I don't think was on the ground would it still be possibly up there?
I don't think I'm going to buy another poulan, I barely used it, maybe 40 hours, is that a lot?
? For you ,
I have a craftsman tractor with a briggs and stratton opposed twin engine on it , and I was wondering if you could tell me how remove and replace the pto crank seal on it without removing the engine? Lmk.
Remove clutch and pulley from bottom of crank. Drill a small hole in old seal, use a screw to drive in the hole and remove the old seal. Take oil out first.
Hello DoubleWide, where can i buy that belt?
Great work. I did not laugh. Been there.
if you leave all that grass on top of that housing it will accumulate til the arms cant move. thats the main problem with the design.
👍
RS 800 is inside oil ?
What I'm trying to find out is how the pedal push rod is attached to the lever
There is a vertical pin sticking up in the top of the transmission. The long horizontal push rod has a looped end the fits over the pin, then an E-clip locks it down so it won't hop up and get loose. There are videos showing the details of the RS800 transmission on General Transmission's website
Transmission Belt IS warranted for 10 years.
Can oil be put in this transmission?
It is grease and no cannot add.
Based on the amount of possible "dead" transmissions discussed in these comments, I'm hoping that someone might want to sell me a Primary Variable Speed Drive Pulley for my Craftsman 19.5 HP 42” LT2500 Lawn Tractor. (Sears Craftsman Model Number 944.602630).
As discussed here in 2009 (for this one year only) Craftsman decided to use the problematic (plastic) General Transmission (GT/Gentrans) RS800 Transaxle.
The tag attached on the transmission reads General Transmission 415663 (87007 C4) and 415663C0100033.
It is a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)) and not a hydrostatic drive.
Looks like i need a primary drive belt , not a transmission one.
man i would hate to have the trans break something inside .
The replacement trans is only about $350 which is like half price compared to the metal ones.
Getting cheaper and cheaper
Yes, but the price of the tractor stays the same.
These transmissions are the worst. I run into the ones that the bearings have rusted out and trying to get into them isn't pleasant. The customers are not comfortable paying the labor cost of replacing the parts.
Those plastic transmission are junk I have one and it’s blowing axle seals. Been told by two repair men that the vent is plugged. Have to pull the transmission out to get to it. 🤬.

Husky part number for the belt is: 592855001
Sounds like a crapmission to me.
May be I don't know for sure. The plastic is reinforced with some sort of fiberglass mesh.
NOT A GOOD MECHANIC. YOU LEFT ALL OF TRASH ON THE TRANSMISSON. SHAME ON YOU........
