  • We've said it before and we'll say it again. It's "make sure your fly box is really full with all the bugs" season. Golden stones, terrestrials, yellow sallies, green drakes, caddis, pale morning duns (PMDs), and blue-winged olives (BWOs) are liable to hatch on any given day in moving water. Meanwhile, on our favorite stillwaters, Callibaetis, Damsels, and Chironomids are hatching. It's THAT time of year.
Tanner Smith was joined by Umpqua's own Alec Gerbec for a "dual-sport" - a little stillwater and a little river - day in South Park, Colorado. While some very welcome afternoon thunderstorms put a halt to our dream of big fish rising to big summertime dries on the Dream Stream, it was a solid day nonetheless. As the old saying goes, you don't leave fish to find fish, and Alec and Tanner certainly found their fair share of solid stillwater fish in the first half of the day before the lightning and thunder rolled through. This month's selection of flies will serve you well whether you're hitting up your favorite stillwater, picking pockets on your favorite river, or chasing trout in the high country.
After our below-average snowpack, it should go without saying that we should all be mindful of low flows and elevated water temperatures. If water temperatures on your favorite river reach 67°F, we recommend giving those trout a break. CLICK HERE to learn more!

Ok, dumb newbie question here. I have only been fly fishing for a little over a year, but so far, outside of Chironomids in still water in the size 12’ish range, I’ve only had luck with small flies. RS2s, BWO’s and midges in the 18-22 size range. Anything larger than that and I get skunked. This is the same for the few friends I know that have been fly fishing for many years. They stick to 18 and smaller flies because that’s all they’ve ever had luck with. I largely fish in heavily pressured areas like Deckers, the Colorado near Williams fork, the Arkansas, etc. is it because these areas are heavily pressured? Any thoughts to what I might be doing wrong with larger flies? Thanks

Dan! We were planning on doing a half day at the lake and a half day on the river....but lightning and thunder got in the way of the second half of our day. The selection of flies we chose will work on moving water and stillwater - use them with confidence!
