i love how the intro leads you in to believe that the song is going to sound brighter, but then her voice kicks in and the entire mood of the song turns a different direction
There’s so much power in her originality. She can turn words into feathers that will tickle you but just as quickly she can spout an alliterative quip and it can hit like a well executed whack from a riding crop
Fiona is one of those rare artists that only releases quality not quantity. Each album stands out on its own. Each release forever embedded with memories and emotions of who and where I was at the time. So grateful to be in a positive place despite current conditions, for future reminiscing. Her last album was released in a particularly dark time for me. And as such, I can't separate painful memories from that album.
[Verse 1] People like us, we play with a heavy balloon Keep it up to keep the devil at bay but it always falls way too soon People like us, we play with a heavy balloon We keep it up to keep the devil at bay but it always falls way too soon People like us, we play with a heavy balloon We keep it up to keep the devil at bay but it always falls way too soon [Chorus] I spread like strawberries! I climb like peas and beans! I've been sucking it in so long That I'm busting at the seams I spread like strawberries! I climb like peas and beans! I've been sucking it in so long That I'm busting at the seams [Verse 2] In the middle of the day, it's like the sun But the Sahara one, staring me down Forcing all forms of life inside of me to retreat underground It grows relentless like the teeth of a rat It's just got to keep gnawing at me And it constricts like a ball on a hose, nothing flows So the pressure grows instead of the sea [Verse 3] People like us get so heavy and so lost sometimes So lost and so heavy that the bottom is the only place that we can find We get dragged down, down to the same spot enough times in a row The bottom begins to feel like the only safe place that you know [Hook] But you know what? [Chorus] I spread like strawberries! I climb like peas and beans! I've been sucking it in so long That I'm busting at the seams I spread like strawberries! I climb like peas and beans! I've been sucking it in so long That I'm busting at the seams [Outro] (I spread like strawberries) (I climb like peas and beans) (I spread like strawberries) (I climb like peas and beans) (I spread like strawberries) (I climb like peas and beans) (I spread like strawberries) (I climb like peas and beans)
Sorry for my english. But, yes I agreed. I think we were needing someone who could write about all these subjects. I am one those who also identifies? With her lyrics. 🤗😔

Fiona's in a class all her own. No one else can touch her. The songs she creates are cerebral, whimsical, and magical; caustic, incisive, quirky and quippy ~ sometimes all in the same song🌝 Her music is like a deeply comforting, satiating meal in front of the fireplace at a 5-star restaurant vs grabbing some fast food in a rush @ the drive-thru {think 'Watermelon Sugar'}. She is a muse to misfits the world over🎶❤️💙💚💜
i have this thing with fiona apple’s music. as long as i wait for an album, i know she’s had to go through some rough shit to get this music out. so while I’m so happy it’s here...I also think to myself...Oh no Fiona are you ok?
I think it was on Letterman she stated she only writes when angry or in pain. Why write if things are going well. Words to that effect. I tell friends as joke. Fiona must not read her mail. I've sent 15k letters and not one reply.. 😉
I STILL get goosebumps listening to this album. I can’t put into words how ..magical and out of this world this entire album is... Fiona. Jesus you are one of a kind!
I have a hard time listening to this album as much as I love it because as a musician the songs get so stuck in my head I cannot sleep. It's the best album of the decade. I feel privileged to have heard it in my lifetime.
Fuck... Fiona, you just threw your anchor into my soul. Again.. I needed this album. I needed this song. Over and over and over... I love you and thank you. (Men are still as disappointing as they were 20 years ago and this album is like ice on my heart)
I can't stop listening to this album. It's not the commercial and catchy type of songs that are out there everywhere. It's Fiona. It's like cocaine to my music senses. Every listen makes me crave more!
For me, this song has a Radiohead's Hail to the Thief-era vibe too. I think it's related to the percussion and funky bassline with the ambience coming and going from the background.
This is my favorite song on the album, along with Under the Table. But I will always sing it as “I smell like strawberries” since that’s what I heard first, and it’s a pleasant image/scent ;)
I'm gonna buy this album the second I have my income back. In the meantime Fiona has done us a solid by making so much of it available free. The heavy reliance on percussion is fascinating and her poetry is at its peak.
This is such a great track! After all this time I thought Fiona was going into hiding and here she is with such a remarkable album that shines like "Tidal" and "When The Pawn..." LOVE IT!
@@plazmikpond I think he's replying to the fact she was in isolation so long, lost a lover and got out of music for a while. This album is about her coming out of the depression, on the contrary
@@paraiso5072 Agreed. I'd love to think every time someone listens she takes another spread or step in her climb to be the strongest, most resilient version of herself.
This song is EVERYTHING. Rhythmically, lyrically, the vocal melody and the overall composition. Gonna blast this all day and exercise my demons by playing my cello to it.

And Under the table
@@khatimmclean852 couldnt agree more.
Best one on the album!

The percussion on this track is mind-blowingly awesome.
Agreed! Loving it. Combined with the base line this song reminds me of “Sleep to Dream”

Radiohead vibes!!!!

ALBUM OF THE YEAR
It’s still early but I agree
Unless Tom Waits makes a crazy good album out of nowhere or Scott Walker recorded the Sundog songs before he died...yeah, I'm very inclined to agree.
Grammy's barely consider the quality of the albums and instead see the popularity of the album so... This deserves to win but I don't think it will
ALBUM OF THE DECADE
It won't win 'cause it's a masterpiece.
*I spread like strawberries
I climb like peas and beans*

I'm trying to conceptualize a tattoo around this because these lyrics have been in my head since the album came out

gabriel reals on first listen, I actually said “oof!” out loud cuz I felt that.
Her voice is so guttural and intense, it sends chills down my spine.
Why is she the only Artist whose lyrics I can completely indentify with?!
Hers are the ONLY full albums I'll actually buy.
Don't think "conversely" was the word you were looking for there.
Not many artists really have much to say nowadays. At least in the pop realm.
Exactly
How the hell did she make this in her living room? What a genius.
Man, at this times every musician compose in his bedroom xd
she did it a part of the album with her phone, i mean, does somebody have a recording with that quality?
